2025 was a big year for EHD, full of more “ups” than “lessons” (which is all you can really ask for), and I feel enormously grateful to still be here. We are closing out the 15th year of the blog, which is wild (that’s most of my adult life!). Some of you have been hanging out with me since I was 30 and watched me win Designstar, host a TV show, have two kids, buy our first home (then move three times), write two books, explode the business (in both a good and bad way), reign it back in and y’all, if you read frequently you really do know me. I could cry when I think about it in a macro way. Thank you so, so much. This year felt full of so much hard work and fun, with my team killing it to create so much daily content on so many platforms. We have systems that really work (amid a ton of necessary flexibility), which is remarkable since we are so lean (me + my 5 full-time crew + Kaitlin, who shoots everything, and Arlyn, who freelances and contributes weekly). It was a record year of reveals (forty!) and a lot of personal growth (what else is mid-life for?).
In January, we added our fantastic social media manager, Marlee, to the team, which was the missing piece that we all needed. Marlee rounds out the awesome Portland crew of Gretchen (producer and stellar right hand) and, of course, our wonderful photographer Kaitlin, along with Jess (editorial director), Mal (email marketing and social manager), and Caitlin (partnerships and revenue), who are killing it from LA. Our workflow really fell into place mid-year with the more filled-out team, which felt sooo good to all of us. Our numbers even grew, which is exciting to see after 15 years in. And while there are always some failings and learnings (life inside digital media is wild, folks), we have such a good rhythm with a dialed-in team that cares so much, loves the work, and is willing to pivot or try new things all the time (or support me when I say no to opportunities). I feel extremely grateful for each of them every day and just really hope that I can continue to offer career growth for as long as possible (I want them to stay here! But more importantly, I want them to thrive individually, so I feel lucky every day they commit to me and allow EHD to be where they work). Like Ester Perel says, “the quality of your life is the quality of your relationships,” so the love inside the EHD team really is the biggest highlight:) But let’s wrap up all the other stuff anyway!

We started the year with our Room Service sofa line shoot, which we did at three different locations, over 8 days. It was A LOT and so fun (Gretch killed it at producing). I learned a lot from this (I probably overshot and overspent – whoops), but loved that we did it all in-house and created such beautiful photos and videos. The tariff situation made us move factories from Mexico to Texas, which required new samples, extra shoots, and more trips for approval. But we are proud they are made in America and can get to you much faster. And thanks to you all who have left reviews – it makes a huge difference in both the Wayfair algorithm and in sales.

What a gift to get to help my friends and family while also doing my “job”. Two of my life-long best friends, Robyn and Nicole, live up here (which was a huge reason I moved back), but we are all so busy with multiple kids and big careers, so by designing their homes, I got an excuse to spend more time with them and really integrate myself into their schedules more often. And I truly couldn’t be happier with how both of them turned out.

Robyn’s living room turned out painfully cozy – I was so jealous. Every time I walk in, I think, “damn, this is such a pretty room.“

Nicole’s home, I mean, what an honor to be able to style and decorate it. They love great design and were willing to do almost everything I said. This is the same team that owns The Carly (which Max designed), so you definitely can tell they care about design.

Seems clear to me from both projects that I’m really into this blue + green + rosey/burgundy color palette. More friends and family projects coming at you in 2026:) But man, those two were so gorgeous.

Probably the most life-changing project we did this year for the business was remodeling our vintage garages, turning them into the most epic prop and furniture storage (and studio).

If you didn’t see that full reveal (with epic before and afters), please go check it out. And a huge thanks to my brother’s company, Afore Construction, for GC-ing this project. It involved far more logistics than I had predicted, and it’s just so rad and functions so well.

I’m not sure what else to say besides I’m so grateful for this home and property, and I love sharing it. We really pulled the bandaid off and decided to finish (almost) all the messy stuff at the same time (outdoor kitchen, landscaping, pickleball court), and I couldn’t believe it was done in time to enjoy summer.

While I have persistently feared about my kids growing up with this abundance, this yard was used and abused by hundreds of people this summer, and felt like a community hub. And celebrating and connecting with neighbors, friends, and family feels pretty dang good.

Being long-distance is hard no matter what relationship you are in, so I really try to get us all together 2-3 times a year to stay connected. Most of the team came up for the sofa shoot to be a part of it in January (Caitlin couldn’t due to family stuff), and then we headed out to The Carly in May and Manzanita in September (both are rentable, BTW, and incredible places).

Man, I’m getting so sentimental. It was just such a stacked year, and I couldn’t do it without these women whom I care about so much. We vision-boarded, shopped, planned, brainstormed, cooked, drank, and watched garbage TV.

It will never be lost on me how lucky I am to work with these talented, fun women, and for so many years now. Very excited for our 2026 retreats (thinking Joshua tree in winter and who knows where in spring and fall – any suggestions?).

It was time. And at first it felt daunting, but now that I reframed it as a low-pressure, experimental design project where I get to learn (almost) every trade and craft, I’m so excited to get more into it. If you haven’t caught up on this, it’s the 1850s original farmhouse that needs all the things. Read these blog posts if you want to deep dive into the project:

I worked on my brother’s house for 4 years, and not only is it done, but we got an 8-page spread in a major print magazine, Better Homes and Gardens. Print media is not dead, folks. And I’m honored to be in it. It’s always really great for business (my brand partners really value IRL mentions in print) and just feels special. My parents were pretty delighted to see two of their kids in a magazine together.

It felt like such a great culmination of so much hard work and fun. Now, we still have their sons’ room to do (and maybe the pantry and front patio), and you’ll see some partnership content being published early next year, but for the most part, it’s a wrap. I absolutely loved doing this project, especially with my brother and sister-in-law. I know that it wasn’t terribly relatable (budget-wise), so we tried hard to really show the process, with design content that felt more universal or personal to my brother and his family. I learned so much – about designing a new build, and about my own design process. One of the best gifts of this job (or any creative career, really) is that you’ll never design the same thing twice, so you are always learning, gathering experience, making mistakes (some preventable, some unpredictable), and that process makes the job feel so rich and fulfilling. Especially when it’s over, and you love it (thank god!).
Finally, a reason to celebrate AI! A personal highlight for me was the ability to read and respond to comments again, now that we had AI technology that filtered out anything too mean-spirited. We’ve monitored and approved comments for years, but I would still accidentally see the “unapproved” comments in the backend when I went in to reply to the nice comments (as you do when you are logged in). So this filter put the “mean-spirited” comments in a folder that Caitlin (our non-AI human) would then go in and manually publish (or delete). The filter wasn’t perfect, and many of my replies even got filtered out at first, but it was a night-and-day difference for my anxiety. And I know that not all of you agreed with this, which I get, but what I can’t express enough is that while I’m very not perfect (I’m pretty aware of my faults and my privilege – and the two are very correlated), I try really hard to be a net positive in the world (and so does my team). And if/when I’m riddled with anxiety, this blog suffers – I become so guarded that it’s a shell of what it used to be, or I dive into an avoidance spiral and barely show up at all. There is a reason why most bloggers have moved on or burned out, and the negativity on the internet from strangers is high on the list. So this is to protect our mental health (my team’s included) and keep us focused on the work, connecting with you all, which we enjoy immensely. And don’t worry, I’m not living in a bubble, surrounded by yes people. We receive feedback and shift all the time (and some of it is very, very uncomfortable for me to hear, but I’m always grateful once I process it in a healthy way). But this is a place that I want people to enjoy coming to, including us. We want people to feel better while here, not worse. It’s a home design blog with, yes, a lot of my personal life, which could be triggering (and I get it, I have people on the internet that trigger me, too), so this tech has made me able to enjoy the conversation. It’s like it’s 2010 again 🙂 Anyway, I don’t want to harp on it much more, but it’s so nice to avoid the few bad apples, and so I can focus on most of you are so wonderful, well-meaning, and full of helpful suggestions or constructive criticism. Thank you so much for being here.
Sure, our rug-line got cancelled (which I wrote about here), and we got hacked so many times that I had to invest in urgently rebuilding and migrating the site on the fly (which was stressful and costly). I learned a lot about myself and the business from both of those situations, which is very humbling and then empowering. And some content flopped while others went viral – such a mystery! Our YouTube video series on the guest cottage was so good and fun in my opinion (Gretchen and Marlee tag-teamed there, and I LOVED what they created). And yet the views were low (for the amount of time it took to create), so we are constantly trying to understand “why” and improve, pivot, or just let go and move on. I’ll never feel fully like I know what I’m doing, and every year is just so different. And if I’m being honest, I’ve dove even further into spirituality, which has helped me immensely feel more aligned and connected to the world, my family, my creativity, you, and of course, the Universe or God. I’ve felt much more content, letting the other stuff fall away. And let’s face it, the world feels so bleak right now, with so much suffering that not appreciating our blessings and practicing gratefulness would be criminal. But going into a new year, you KNOW I have some resolutions, improvements, things I’m excited to see if I can shift in my life.
Anyway, thank you so much for being here and allowing us to still be here. We really, really love it, and we know that it’s a privilege to love what you do so much. While there is no perfect job (and all of us have annoying tasks that we dread or avoid), we know that being able to create design content for a wide, supportive audience is such a gift. And the fact that we are still here has so much to do with you, the daily readers who help us feel supportive even as the blogging world continues to disappear. We made it 15 years, folks. January 1 marks the beginning of year 16, and I’m really, really excited to see where it leads. So much love, Emily.

What a lovely post! Nollaig Shona from Ireland, Happy Christmas (or Happy Holidays) to you, your family, your team and to all my fellow readers (who I feel I meet in the comments, so we’re bonded too). And wishing everybody a wonderful 2026 to come.
thank you so much 🙂 i love that you might feel bonded with other readers. makes us feel so supported. xx
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Emily and team! I am so grateful with how much you all share with us. Your designs are inspiring, but the opportunity to connect with you as people is what keeps us here. The balance of projects in 2025 was awesome – so many reveals, but also a mix of budget-friendly content and aspirational, trends and personal posts….I don’t know what I would do in the mornings without the blog to go with my cup of coffee. Thank you for your vulnerability and all the inspirational content. And thank you for keeping the blog alive and not pivoting to only social platforms. I like being able to settle in for a while.
This means so much!!
Ah thank you – my goodness, I appreciate every single word you wrote. truly making my day (and i’m going to make sure the team reads all these comments – what a nice way to end the year). thank you thank you thank you.
EHD is such a gift to me personally. You brighten my mornings, and anytime I need advice for a design decision, I’m googling “Emily Henderson _____” to see what you’ve said.
Thank you Emily, Jess, Caitlin, Mallory, Gretchen, Marlee, and Kaitlin!
We so appreciate you!
Ah thank you so much. It really means a lot. xx
I start so many mornings with a coffee and the blog—it’s such a nice, grounding way to ease into the day. I’m an art director in Canada and have been following along since the Los Feliz house days. I really love how you balance great design with real life; so many posts feel familiar and comforting. Thanks for sharing so much of your process.
Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas!
Thank you so so so much. I too start the day with coffee and a blog (many times this blog if I didn’t write it which is such a treat). We try so hard to be a warm place to be so we so appreciate your comment. xx
Whatever happened to the promised reveals from the design coach series about Chrissy and Pete?
I’m also curious about this!
They ended up going out of town for a few months, but we are shooting in January!
Right back at you, Emily! A big thank you to you and your team! It’s almost always the fun part of my day.
Thank you thank you!
Ah than you!
Thank you for all of your hard work. You are my first read of the morning and it immediately puts a positive spin on my day. I’ve loved watching your home renovation. You’ve created an amazing home as well as a community gathering place. My husband and I completed our forever home in July. It was 15 years in the planning. At 72 years old I’m finally in the home that I designed and decorated. So thank you for your insight. I learned so much from reading your blog. Have a wonderful holiday season. I seldom comment but I so enjoy your content. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Oh, this makes me so happy! Congratulations!!
GAH! congratulations! That makes me so happy. And i’m just so grateful for the comment. It really means so much to us. xx
I’ve loved you since your Design Star and Brass Petal days! Wishing you and your team the happiest of holidays.
Thank you so much, Jodi. What a ride its been and it means so much to me (and us) that you been following so long. xxxxx
What makeover was the first photo with Emily on the blue sofa?
I think maybe a promo shot for the new sofa line?
It is! It’s the Oscar from our Room Service photo shoot:)
EHD team, reveling almost daily in your thoughtful creativity and kind-hearted take on the world makes ME a more intentional, curious, positive person. Thank you for another gorgeous, inspirational, eye-opening year, and here’s to a kajillion more. xo
THANK YOU!!
Ah thank you so much for saying that. Its honestly such encouragement to keep doing it. thank you thank you. xx
I truly love being a small part of your lives, business, and readership. I live for these kinds of posts that create a feeling of connection, and the internet can be a dark place, but when I read your authentic voices it impacts my life in small but positive ways. Thanks all for the thrills this year.
Ah thank you. i love writing the personal posts (its a great way for me to reflect, journal, etc) so this is always encouraging. thank you thank you. xx
Hooray for Team EHD! I’ve been a follower since DesignStar, and hope for many more years ahead. Thank you for the insights and inspiration.
Thank YOU! that’s a long time so I really, really, really appreciate it. xx
I love this blog so much. It is up there with Cup of Jo. Really the only two blogs I read everyday anymore. It is personal and just so well curated. The one thing I do what to tell you, Emily – don’t worry about what people think. You are so thoughtful and giving. You can never please everyone and you don’t need to. 🙂
AH thank you 🙂 Its something I work on all the time, TBH. I’m not a people pleaser actually and I know that i can’t control the perception of me (Let Them :)), but its so nice to engage here with nice people without having to accidentally read terrible things about myself. There certainly are platforms for people to say anything they want, which I would never ever ever read 🙂
Thanks for all the work that goes into this blog. I appreciate that you’re still here and not just on social media platforms, most of which I don’t do. I would also always always read and see photos rather than watch a video–that way I’m engaging at my own pace. (I know others feel differently but that’s my two cents.) I also appreciate the opportunity to learn about design (thank you Arlyn) and see good design applied to regular people’s houses. Some other design blogs I used to read regularly became a little detached from most people’s reality and I very much appreciate that you show how good design can enrich an apartment, a rental, a kitchen that you can’t or don’t want to completely gut, etc. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for the shoutout! It’s my joy to research and share about all things design! <3
Thank you! Such a thoughtful comment (and I love that Arlyn saw it). xx
Congratulation on making it through 15 years! I love how you share the up and downs because then we can really see and appreciate all the hard work involved.
FYI – you mentioned low views on the Youtube series and I know for me, I want still photos. Then I can study and zoom in to learn from what’s being shown.
I love your blog!! Thank you for making the world a more beautiful place!
thank you! Yea, I prefer still photos, too so it might just be an audience habits thing. It also takes time to grow on any platform and if you have to be consistent which I haven’t been. xx
A day without EHD is like a day without … a dog? coffee? a good salad? In other words, unthinkable. I often wake just a few minutes after the 3am CST post time, read word for word most nights, fall back to sleep and wake up ready to re-read and poke around the comments. All of you are considerably younger so I extra appreciate a window into the minds/priorities of younger generations even if I can’t always cypher the acronyms 😆 Thanks for making “my” world and “the” world a better place.
Oh my goodness!!! that’s so wonderful to hear. Thank you so much for sharing. xx
THANK YOU soooo much for being the happy spot on my day’s online reading. No more NYTmes first, it’s you girl ! How long have I been reading? Well, I remember when you didn’t have kids !!!
I can’t bring myself to say Happy New Year because I don’t see anything happy about it but I did find these words of wisdom
“Live in the sunshine
Swim the Sea
Drink the wild air”
by Ralph Waldo Emerson. along with Henry David Thoreau one of America’s first hippies.
Blessings to you and your family,
Fede
omg, what a huge compliment. Such a nice thing to say. And i love that quote. xxx
I’m a longtime reader but very rarely comment—I’ve been following you for over a decade and I think I’ve commented…thrice? As a civil rights lawyer who loves design, your blog has been such a joyful haven throughout the years. It really means a lot to have a place I can enjoy and learn more about how to design and style my home without having to check my values at the door. (So many influencers make me feel like that article from The Onion that’s like “Woman Takes Break From Being Feminist To Enjoy TV Show,” haha.) To that point, I was inspired by Robyn’s house reveal to install picture rail in my own living room this year, and I used the rods you recommended to turn it into an epic gallery wall of vintage activist art I’ve collected over the years. Thanks to y’all for the inspiration!
Ah thank you!!! hahahahahha
Congrats on 15 years! Thank you for continuing to create such beautiful, educational, and engaging content. I’ve learned so much and enjoy reading the blog on a regular basis. Happy holidays!
Thank you! xxx
Can you do a separate “recap” post with links to all of the 40 reveals from this year? I know there were a ton, but now I can’t remember all of them.
Yes! It comes out on Monday (next week) I believe. It was such an epic year 🙂 makes me nervous about this year – i need to get going!!!
I follow many blogs, about 30 of them. Predominantly design but also a few food/lifestyle. And yours is my TOP and FAVOURITE of all of them. You always have good, varied, interesting, regular content, and beautiful pictures.
THANK YOU!!! that is such a compliment. Really appreciate hearing that today 😉
Thank you for creating this beautiful blog and community. I am a long-time follower and every day, I look forward to closing my office door, eating my lunch and reading this blog. An escape from my stressful job. Happy holidays to the entire EHD team!
Thank you for this awesome creative home! Also how did I miss Nicole’s home?!?! Pinning immediately 🙂
Fifteen years! Wasn’t it just yesterday you were on that design show Iwhich you deservedly won)?
Thank you for all of the hard work and solid content your team has posted over the years. I still click on this site almost every morning with my coffee. And I’m still glad you don’t have to deal with negative feedback anymore.
I so appreciate you and all the daily readers, you have no idea. thank you thank you!
Merry Christmas, Emily & crew! I don’t think I’ve ever commented on here before, but I’ve read your blog every day for the past few years and enjoy it so much. I also LOVED the cottage YouTube series! Thank you for all that you do!
ah thank you!! glad to know people are watching it 🙂
Thank you Emily! You inspire me! I love how your love for Portland and the Pacific NW shows up too- as a native Portlander it does my heart good!
As an Oregonian (and one of those followers who saw you win Design Star) – I only recently learned of your website and YouTube – it’s so nice to see someone local doing so well with such taste! I look forward to more videos on the guest cottage and hope you aren’t discouraged by the numbers. Looking forward to more content in 2026.
This made me tear up – so excited for the EHD team & everything you guys have going on! Miss you all ! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
It made me tear up, too (is this Emily Bowser????)
Happy Holidays Team EHD! ❤️ this was such a wonderful post. Much love!
Congratulations!
Great post, appreciate yalls hard work!!
team retreat idea: Leann Ford and Grace Mitchell designed place in Round Top !
OOOOH thats a GREAT idea!!I Here’s the problem – Round top is in October (our busiest month) and March (during spring break) so we always so our retreats in september and spring. But I guess we don’t need to go during round top itself and just shop…. anyway, great idea!
Hello Emily and team, I am so happy you have employed AI to help manage the meanies out there. You deserve only positivity as that is what you continue to put out into the world. Like so many of your followers and commenters, you are a daily moment for me. Daily rituals and routine are such an important part of happiness and well being and EHD is a part of mine. Thank you so much for many years of happiness and here’s to another 15 years pretty please. 🙂 We will all still be here for you and I sincerely appreciate everything you post and do to inspire, entertain and educate. xx
ah thank you so so so so much. xx
I loved the prop/garage organization videos. I enjoyed seeing the process and would love seeing more long-form video content from you all! I was a big fan of your HGTV show and my fav thing will always be the Frame TV campaign videos. I’m by no means a YouTube expert, but after growing a channel for nearly 5 years, I found it is very hard to get traction unless you show up on YouTube often. It’s like you have to retrain the platform all over again when you have an inconsistent posting schedule. I was also surprised that people who adore your content elsewhere won’t necessarily watch YouTube videos. You have to grow that audience within YouTube. Anyway, totally understand not wanting to go all in unless the return is there (long-form videos are a beast), but I personally would love to see more. 😉
Thank you! yah, that’s what we kinda concluded. That we just weren’t doing it enough or as often as needed to grow. the blog has an established audience and IG is big obviously, so we want to and have to dedicate time/energy and while there might be a world where I hire out and dedicate more womanpower to the platform, I just don’t know how important it is to me in my life priority list 🙂 But I appreciate your insight and wanting to see more – also what is yours????
i’ve followed you since Design Star!!!! Love the blog, your generous spirit, the wonderful team you have, including alumni, the content you share and especially how open and transparent you are. Here’s to a happy, healthy and productive 2026!
thank you thank you!
I love this update! As someone who is your same age, shares a similar design style, and has cheered you on from the beginning, I’ve returned to your blog time and again over the years for everything from gift suggestions to design inspo as we’ve renovated our own fixer-upper. It’s hard to stay relatable when you’re very much in the public eye, but you’ve seemed to have gathered the people – personally and professionally – that have allowed you to do so (plus some choice AI ◡̈ ), so kudos to you!! Here’s to a better 2026 for us all and another 15+ years for EHD!!
Thank you so much for saying that. My team really is incredible and their perspective is so important to me and the audience. thank you 🙂
Come to Maine!!!!
Thanks for a great year! I appreciate this space and this team so much.
Thank your these words Emily and EHD team !
I think AI comment monitoring really helps the feeling that this blog is a safe place. It’s good for my anxiety (which can be challenging at times). When i come here, i know there won’t be hateful comments and i honestly need that sometimes. And i guess others do too 🙂
We love what you do !
Wishing you all Joyeuses Fêtes from the south of France.
thank you for saying that! I agree – the negativity isn’t good for anyone (and there are always platforms that people can go to). xx
I read your blog nearly every day and am grateful for it. Happy Holidays! 💝
Happy 15!
