Happy Monday! This post has been updated with all of Monday’s newest sales information.
HELLO, IT’S ME. (Tragically, not Adele. Just Caitlin.) I’m here today to present you with my magnum opus: the best list of Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales ever compiled. I’m not joking here – this bad boy was compiled with your tastes and preferences in mind. (Speaking collectively here, but like…you get it.)
Here’s the deal: I stared at a bunch of data and pulled all the sales that you, my beloved pals, are most likely to enjoy. We have sections for Home & Decor, Fashion & Beauty, and Gifts – CMD+F to jump there faster! There’s SO MUCH going on this weekend on the internet, so hopefully, this can help you wade through all the muck a little bit. I’ll be here and updating this post every day with new info as it hits my inbox…so come back and visit me, yeah? And as always, feel free to drop your own business’ sale or any recommendations in the comments – we’d love to support ya!
PS. I know this is a big list of things to buy. That does not mean you SHOULD buy anything on it. (This is a warning for you, but it is also the sentence I’ve been repeating to myself for the past week.) Only grab what you need or what you’re planning to gift – your wallet and the planet will thank you. OK. NOW. Let the sales begin!!!

Wow! This looks great. Thank you.
And honestly, I would rather hear from you than Adele on this particular day!
Hope your holiday was a good one, Caitlin 😉
I received a cute “Black Friday” email from the library: http://dallaslibrary2.org/docs/LibraryBlackFriday2021.pdf
Hi team, is this blog going to be a window shop forever?
If that is the case I will be leaving…
This isn’t an airport. No need to announce your departure.
That is a fair comment but let’s give the team a couple of days / weeks to adjust to the feedback ! This post was probably scheduled for Black Friday a long time ago
Who all is just here for the comment section now? 🙋🏼♀️😂
Been wrestling with these questions (consumption) a lot lately. Can a blog that supports more than 1 person exist without relying heavily on increasing consumption/affiliate links? Probably not easily. It’s funny because I find instagram too addicting so I tune in here but maybe I’m here in part for the quick high /feel good of ogling beautiful things which feels a bit similiar to my instagram high in the end.
Kristi, I was just wondering the same thing as well. I know EHD is a pretty large team, and they get most (all?) their revenue from sponsorships and links. Can “Influencers”/ Content Creators promote sustainability and responsible consumerism while also bringing in enough money for multiple salaries? Honestly not sure.
They promote themselves as designers, so shouldn’t the bulk of their revenue becoming from design work for outside clients and not affiliate links? It been years since ED has showcased a home design that wasn’t her house, her brother’s house or a staff member’s house/apartment. It seems like instead of building a real design business, she has shifted into an influencer model. Hence the link heavy posts. This is okay but some honesty/transparency would be nice. Stop talking about sustainability and responsible design choices while filling our screens with links to the most unsustainable products. There are many design blogs out there that manage a balance between sponsorships, affiliate links and design content. I think that’s what most of critical commenters would like – a balance between real design and commercialism. I know I would.
Seeing as Em famously shut down the design portion of her business in 2017 and has written a ton of posts about her decisions to step away from client work over the past half decade…this is just laughable. The communication has been here. You just haven’t paid attention, obviously.
I don’t know about “Em famously shutting down the design portion of her business”…but I do remember her stepping away from client work (for the time) to focus on her own projects- The Mountain House and Portland Project. Sadly the original design content on the blog went away with the clients. Sure, there has been no outright communication to say “Hey guys, we’re leaning hard into consumerism and stepping away from design!” But it is undeniable when the majority of content comes in the form of round-ups, link-ups, and affiliate link laden how to’s. Not to mention the 25 days of gift guides.
The farmhouse renovation was promised to bring lots of fresh design content, but where is it? The few glimpses here & there were posts full of affiliate links to ranges, tile & pot fillers. I see that not only as a huge missed opportunity, but a pretty obvious declaration of where this blog’s priorities are. I’d say a lot of readers are paying attention to that.
As an other person who works in digital media, I feel for the team. You know what garners clicks and revenue in Q4? Gift guides and roundups. If they WEREN’T making money on this strategy, they’d stop. They’re not going to give up millions of page views and dollars because 15 whiners feel entitled to different content with the team’s personal updates. (And to those who say “oh, we pay for this content with our traffic, so we should be serviced” – advertisers spend the most on gift guides. Point blank.) Over and over, all of you are screaming into a void. There’s a reason EHD hasn’t addressed or responded to these comments and it’s because this is their BUSINESS and their financial strategy is clearly WORKING. No one’s forcing you to read this. No one is entitled to design content. No one is entitled to learning more about Em’s projects. This team clearly knows what they’re doing. They’ve rolled out multiple houses here. They’ll share updates when they’re ready and when their partners have signed off. (And yeah, famously IS right. There are tons of blog posts about this. A simple google search leads to this one…and this one…and… Read more »
Why do you ‘feel for the team’ if the business strategy is working so well? I get that this is just how the blogsausage is made and that there is no mountain house renovation without the Target halloween decoration money. The balance of interesting content vs link dumps doesn’t seem to be quite right though, or maybe people are just feeling more grossed out by wretchedly excessive consumerism.
Alison, maybe you shouldn’t assume what people do or don’t know, and try to spare judgement on the intention behind their words. While you’re hung up on the word “famously”, I was making a reference to the “shutting down the design portion of her business” part…she stepped away from design clientele, not design as a whole. To ensure better blog content, right?
Speaking of content, is it entitled of readers to inquire about the design projects Emily announced here, when she promised new and solid design ideas, every step of the way? Or just entitled of those same readers to think she’d follow through with them?
As a loyal reader of over a decade, I sincerely want this blog to succeed- whether I stick around or not. I know how advertising works and I have no doubt that the affiliate links & sponsors are paying off…literally. Good for them! At what cost though? When you start labeling plastic holiday decor as “sustainable” just because it’s from your favorite sponsor or put a “shop responsibly” disclaimer at the end of the 17th gift guide…it becomes pretty ridiculous, not to mention disingenuous.
Alison, I think it’s unfair to say that loyal readers who have supported this blog for years aren’t able to post honest feedback, particularly because the feedback re gift guides/shopping-based posts is not being addressed by the team. Yes, you’re right: ads and partnerships bring in the cash — I don’t think any of us are here without knowing that. But EHD wouldn’t be able to garner such high fees without a huge and loyal readership, and it’s unfair of the team to take that for granted. I’d really like it if Emily/one of the team said something like “We hear you, we get it, we didn’t get the balance right this year. We have to see this schedule out until the end of the holiday period but next year we’ll work harder at balancing these shopping guides with design content.” There have been so few design posts lately — the last one from Ryann’s MOTO reveal was choc-full of gifted products with affiliate links it was ridiculous — it’s like, what are we all here for? This blog seems to function as Like To Know It more than anything else these days, and like, fine — but state that… Read more »
Yes, I think that’s why Cupofjo has such a small “inside” team and pays outside contributors for content, it’s more sustainable this way
Hey Caitlin, I laughed when I clicked the link to the chandelier you want because I totally suspected what it would be and I was right– I feel like you have my dream art deco apartment and I also have that shop bookmarked! Living vicariously through you, tbh!
I’m interested only for the design part of the blog.
The link-ups don’t bother me. There’s no subterfuge here where you think it is a post about reducing your carbon footprint and it turns out to be an ad for Kleenex. This is a marketing blog. It markets a lot of design related products, but it is definitely about buying stuff. That is what an influencer does- they influence you to spend money.
This blog is fun to read and I appreciate that it does not require a subscription fee. The alternative to sponsored content and advertising revenue is direct support by readers. That’s a great model and there are a lot of content creators who support themselves that way. I don’t think it would make sense for this particular site bc it’s all about buying stuff anyhow, whether that stuff is candles and shoes or handcrafted tiles and large appliances.
Where is the bench from in the first photo with the text? I saw the credit at the bottom said it was from Ryann’s living room but it doesn’t seem to be the same room
It was this reveal: https://stylebyemilyhenderson.com/blog/cozy-bedroom-design-ideas . Think that was the sold out Target Smith & Hawken Hardwood Windsor Bench but a similar one is linked in the post.
Oops, I’m a writing professor and I have a copy edit note for ya’ll:
I would remove this part:
PS. I know this is a big list of things to buy…Only grab what you need or what you’re planning to gift – your wallet and the planet will thank you.
This section would imply you do not want your readers to make purchases, which runs counter to the values of capitalism and consumption present throughout the rest of this article and the body of the blog’s recent content as a whole.
What would you suggest they do, Linda? Shut down the blog? Or run it without revenue as a public service? I agree: capitalism sucks. But this is the water we’re all swimming in–even you, Linda, a writing professor! You can try to keep yourself pure and clean, but you can’t do that while also demanding content from this for-profit business. They’re going to have to crack a few affiliate-linked eggs to make enough omelette to feed the staff.
Perhaps you have said it yourself right here – evaluate the demand. Is this the content the audience demands, or the business? You’re right that I participate in capitalism, but there is a critical difference in that I do not preach a message of environmentalism and reduced footprint while influencing others to buy things for my benefit. I do not tell my students that forests are vanishing while in the same breath suggesting they buy my book. I would also say that there are more than a few affiliate-linked eggs. Almost all the eggs are affiliate-linked eggs, so we are all eating affiliate-linked omelettes every day. We pay for the content in arguably the most valuable currencies in today’s age: our time, attention and clicks. If we move on, the business suffers. So it would just make sense to weigh the brand’s values: do we want to make money off of content, or by selling? Consumers know when they are being manipulated by a brand. It’s a trick as old as time. We like to believe we are good and that our money supports ethical brands. See: every rainbow display during pride month, pink ribbons, etc. Maybe the nakedness of… Read more »
Oh wow! Thank you Caitlin. Cannot imagine how much effort it took to compile this amazing post. I’m all over this!
I start my holiday shopping on Cyber Monday and I genuinely appreciate having this blog to go to for the sales info I know I will want instead of having to check out every single website I can think of myself. Thanks Caitlin!
