The Stained Glass Door Pattern Plan – Vote For Your Favorite!

Ok y’all. While we haven’t finished the floor plan of this bathroom yet, we are getting VERY close. We’ve narrowed it down to option 1 (one shared outhouse with a partition) and option #2 (two smaller ones with a sink in between or a vanity across in front of the window). I have a strong feeling #2 is going to win out. Regardless, we think that the stained glass can be decided on, which will inform our tile colors/designs, which is next on our list. You all had a ton of opinions, which we loved, and we’ve narrowed it down even further.

As a reminder, this is likely what it’s going to look like and where the stained glass will be. Two vintage doors that have cutouts for alllll these different squares to be glass. We will paint the doors to match the buildings. We went shopping for stained glass at Bullseye in Portland, and you can see that post here. It was so inspiring.

Stained Glass Door Pattern

The clear winners of the last post were Options B and D, but soooo many of you said you didn’t like the glass pattern flipped and instead wanted it mirrored or uniform.

I love both of these, honestly. So does Brian (although I wasn’t sure he even noticed a difference until I pointed it out).

Option E:

Option E is option D, but with steel blue instead of that lighter blue (which was a commenter’s idea that we loved). We then applied it both mirrored and uniform. But I honestly LOVE symmetry way more than I want to admit (it seems like the predictable choice), but it calms my chaotic brain so much. So I was surprised that I didn’t think of that and really appreciated the idea.

It’s such a subtle difference – mirrored or uniform. I’ve been staring at these for so long that I have no idea why I prefer one over the other, but I do, but I could also be wrong. Keep reading.

Here are the same two, but within the building, in case that makes a difference to your eye.

Option F:

Gretch played around with Option B and applied the changes in both mirrored and uniform. Once again, I prefer the uniform or identical versions. I think that light blue catches my eye too much and feels like the only thing that moves (in the mirrored version) whereas it feels more balanced in the uniform version, even though it still pops.

See what I mean? In “mirrored,” it feels accidental; in uniform, it feels right and balanced.

Option G:

Another version of D, but this time “mirrored” and “uniform”. I still so love this one.

But again, It seems to me that they should match unless everything feels evenly peppered and balanced. The fact that the two main squares stay the same in mirrored but other colors in other boxes changed bothers me a bit. Not a ton, but a bit.

Option H & I:

OOOOOOOHHHHH. I solidly LOVE both of these. I honestly don’t think I have a preference, and I know that I could design the bathroom tile around both of these (which obviously have a shared color palette). Which is why I’m going to need help…

In option H, it feels more tonal with less bold pops. Option I has the big red and the big light blue, which is not a bad thing!! Maybe it’s a better way to go?? I’d honestly be so happy with both of these.

Option J: (Could Nix, Bad One)

A few suggested going with fewer colors overall and keeping a more mirrored pattern. Here’s what two of those options could look like…

This felt like a missed opportunity to keep the main panels the same. It almost felt like the person who laid it out didn’t realize that they were two separate frames. This is a hard no for me.

MY FAVORITE FOUR:

So I narrowed it down to my final four – two that look more random (although they aren’t – these are the original flipped/diagonal designs), and then two that are matching.

There is something I genuinely love about this random playfulness. Your eye just dances around, and it feels balanced, but unpredictable.

But having the two doors be uniform and identical is also so tempting to me! I fully mixed anything that was truly “mirrored,” but I like these identical doors. The “random” is more whimsical and playful, the uniform might read more classic. I honestly don’t think I’d regret either.

Please Vote!!!

Y’all, I really think I might just go with what you think, should there be an overwhelming winner. I love all of them. Obviously, they all share the same colors; it’s just the configuration that is debatable.

**And no, we haven’t fully decided on the layout yet, but leaning hard to just have two separate outhouses for now. Seems like trying to plan for every future scenario might be impossible, so sacrifices and compromises will be made that make the most sense for our lives and current usage, while leaving some flexibility for changes. I’ll fill you in more when I have any definitive, I promise 🙂

As mama to 4 little boys, two separate stalls within one room is a dream scenario for a public space. I get to have privacy, and they get to use a urinal. It also means twice as many people can use the bathroom at once, making lines move faster.

She’s designing this bathroom to be single use, not public just fyi! I and others were confused on this too but she clarified in the comments on other posts. 🙂

I can imagine having a separate urinal stall would be very useful for moms bringing kids in to go to the bathroom during parties etc . Two separate stalls means no one has to see, smell or think about the urinal unless they are using it, helping a small child to use it, or cleaning it, and that seems like a big win to me.

Please, I know you have a million options, but on the red and blue ones (D on the first round), swap the amber panels with the green so the red and amber aren’t next to each other. Then you have the warm big panel surrounded by smaller cooler colours, and the cool big panel surrounded by smaller warmer colours. It’s throwing off all the options with the big red panel and I like them the best.

I love Option H! It feels the most Emily Henderson to me, with the predominant blues and greens and the smaller pops of red and amber. Gorgeous!

To my eye, having the larger panels uniform and then mirroring the smaller panels makes the most sense. I like F mirrored. I think I would like it even more if the pale blue was out – that contrast is (I think) what is making you favor the uniform versions. I think I would like Option H better if the 4 corners were yellow – I’m missing that happy pop of color. So, I didn’t vote above because I’m still a mix of several options – sorry!

wow, I chose H and was so surprised so many others did too! I think the yellow corners were still giving the Pizza Hut vibe.

but I think the direction you’re moving, i.e. more ordered, is more mission/craftsman/Frank Lloyd Wright and less Pizza Hut, less Tiffany lamp. which makes sense.

I didn’t vote.
I still don’t love any of them – I think it’s the colors.
I prefer the patterns of EU and H.

I would worry the light blue in the big section would be too see through, that whoever was in there would feel too exposed

Maybe it’s just the graphics and this will look amazing in person, but so far, just seeing it one dimensionally, only Option H stands out as less jarring than the others.

I agree with the other Kristin 🙂 Who said that ‘Option H with the blue and green feels the most Emily Henderson’. Love it, and I’m all for 2 separate stalls with a larger vanity across. A vanity in between feels too cramped. Can’t wait to see the reveal!

I love all the options again! I’m just super pumped/flattered that my suggestion to use the Steel Blue as a large panel was considered!!! I wonder if some of the H votes are partially reacting to yellow in the corners

Option J (uniform) is getting closer, but I think it needs still fewer colors. There’s a lot going on in this bathroom with textures and colors and lines.

Option B. Why: Asymmetry is more fun and makes the color variety “dance”. Also the colors blend nicely and look more expensive, and the turquoise works so well as a fun accent rather than a main color. The doors should be fun! It’s not your front door (where symmetry might be more important), it’s an adorable outhouse! Do they make moon-shaped stained glass? 😉

I voted for option H, because I’m not a fan of the red. Seems a little too dark??

While looking at the color layout PLEASE think about the transparency of the colored glass. You can see quite a lot through some colors and textures.

The amber you are holding in the photo isn’t hiding much. Little boys will peek through the windows.

So many choices, that was hard. The light will look relly nice coming through those glass doors.

I like H the best and am glad you tried more colorways. My concern is that it appears that you have to leave either side in order wash hands at the sink. Won’t that be unsanitary, or am I reading the plans incorrectly?

I am so invested in this Ha

Back to the layouts. Option 1b you added a vanity under the big window. Is there a reason you can’t put a sink there with a larger counter? And get rid of the sink on the outhouse wall all together? Overall I like layout 2 best, two separate little buildings will be the cutest for sure. Or what about options 4 with the sink under the 65” window and the outhouse wall moved closer to the corner?

Option H is the clear winner to me!!

H! 100%! Love more similarly saturated colors bs the kinda glaring light blue, even w smaller panes. Fun to see all the iterations!

I’m not sure if you’ve looked at the International Residential Code? There are a lot of restrictions related to glass in doors and glass in bathrooms. I would urge you to read those carefully and check with your Code Enforcer.

Please review section R308 Glazing, of the IRC and talk to your Code Enforcer. “Glazing in fixed and operable panels of swinging, sliding and bifold doors shall be considered a hazardous location”. Also, depending on which plan you proceed with, glazing in doors within 60″ of a tub or shower is hazardous. Though you may think your glass is “decorative” and there is an exception for that, decorative glass must be a carved, leaded or Dalle glass assembly, which I don’t believe yours is. If you are trying to “learn” and “teach” through this process, please do the homework to learn what is required for glass in doors.

Not sure why the reply comment I left was removed? It was giving you useful information. You need to do your homework and research the building code related to glass in doors and bathrooms. This should be part of the process and shared with your readers so they can understand what is required.

Love the steel blue in there (think I suggested it previously?), but absolutely no red. So it’s H for the win!!

I wish you’d provided an option H, unmirrored. But re the color, I recommend choosing the shades that let the most natural light pass through. But the mirrored layouts are more visually interesting — to me, at least.

I like less contrast between the two main panes, and I like the pop of yellow and the more ramdom look of the flipped border, so B!

If you are still going to paint the doors, why are we still seeing the mockups with the dark blue? Maybe I missed that. I think they’re all so similar I feel like we’re comparing those apples to these apples to them apples and maybe i just want to see an orange or a pineapple 🤪🤣🙆‍♀️💃

This is my reaction, too, lol. They are all so similar to my eye. I feel like Anne Hathaway’s clueless character in the Devil Wears Prada scene where the editorial staff is trying to decide on a belt.

That said, if I look long enough I start to have favorites but my preference is different every time I look!

Option J is the only one I don’t like- it pops out to me in a bad way. All the rest are lovely. You can’t go wrong.

Also I second the concerns of a previous commenter about the amber yellow glass being transparent!

I know this wasn’t the assignment but I keep thinking – wouldn’t it be awesome to have a surprise sauna instead of a urinal shed?

I love option H so much more than any I’ve seen yet!! I think peace for your eyeballs is so much more important in the long run than being exciting or different for the sake of different. AND AND AND – I have to say one more time, maybe you could color drench the interior of the urinal outhouse black, and the interior of the toilet outhouse another pretty color like mauve or blue!! Thank you again for letting all of us join in on your process 🙂

Voting Option D but using steel blue. I love the randomness and you’re doing this for fun so make it fun.
Option H looks like little green aliens with light blue hats, hands, and feet (which could be cute but that’s what I see each time).

Penny

I stuck totally with option d, all the way but definitely uniform. I feel the others are too dark and a little drab for me lol.
Just saying hahaha xx

I think I get where you’re coming from with your inspiration (outhouses! charming family adventures!) but with the stained glass door, these are coming off a lot more “church confessional” than “camp ground”
It’s absolutely your call, but to me, as someone raised Catholic, these are coming across as a little sacrilegious. I just wanted to flag that in case “Holy S**t” wasn’t what you were going for.

Love the two outhouse design! Love the H pattern though I wish it had a little more of the amber color and not the dark red. Could you swap out one of the reds for an amber? That would warm up and balance all the cool tones in the rest of the glas. This is going to be epic!
