Last year, we skipped shooting our house decked out for Christmas because it looked exactly like the year before (so why spend the time or money?). But this year, with the advent of two new pieces of furniture (our awesome Barb sofas), I felt excited to decorate, show, and tell. But November is pretty much March Madness for content creators, so I didn’t have time to really plan; instead just winged it with what I had in the garage and a trip to the Mill End Fabric store. So despite thinking I could just pull it together, the day of the shoot was rough (at first). The first big pulled back shot took no less than 2 hours to finalize. Like one shot, styled 80 different tiny changes (if I didn’t love this so much, it would be truly maddening). I tried every combination of pillows, throws, coffee table accessories, and it wasn’t until we hit this version above, with pops of pinks and ochres, that it came together. It wasn’t what I had predicted (I thought I was going to lean into the Ralph Lauren trend, but it just wasn’t working!!). So here we have a playful, whimsical, Scandi version of our living room with a family tree dripping with DIYs and sentimental ornaments. It’s extremely cozy and fun to be in.

Pre-Lit Faux Trees | Tree Skirts (unavailable) | Garland (Clear Glass or Colorful) | Twinkle Light Curtain | Burgundy Pillow | Blue Pillow | Throw Blanket
The entry is a dream to shoot, and Kaitlin always nails it. This year, I bought yardage of plaid taffeta (fashion fabric) and ripped it into wide and long ribbons. I love how they pop in the light, and it ties that incredible Anthropologie blanket and Schoolhouse pillow (Target pillow behind it!).

Blue Velvet Lumbar Pillow | Sweater | Skirt | Tights | Shoes (vintage)
Everything twinkles in here during the day or night. You can’t really see the curtain lights in the photos, but y’all, they are 100% worth the splurge if you have the right window – so delicate and shimmery. When we shot the sweater fashion shoot the week before, I had different pillows, but once I got that red plaid blanket, I wanted to amp it up a bit and love it in here so much. Shout out to those pre-lit Alpine trees that again, add the best glow and a lot of impact for almost zero effort.

Pre-Lit Garland | Round Bells | Larger Bells | Blue Square Pillow | Green Plaid Blanket | Woven Basket | Blue Round Pillow | Burgundy Blanket
I LOVE this vignette. No one ever sits here, but every time I walk down the stairs, I see it and get that burst of dopamine that only style junkies have. I added more books and frames to give it a cozy library feel (all the gold frames are filled with Santa photos from over the years – a FANTASTIC hack and tradition that is not too late to do). I also really love the juxtaposition of the floral trad chaise and the more modern lamp, with the hits of cobalt from the Schoolhouse pillow and throw.

Pre-Lit Garland | Round Bells | Larger Bells
The plug-in lit garland is excellent, and I offset the asymmetry with no less than like 10 strips of fabric or ribbons on the left, adding bells from World Market. (TBH, I threw up what we had from last year and then just added the patterns and bells on top of it).

Round Burgundy Pillow | Burgundy Blanket | Ochre Striped Bolster | Paper Trees | Snowflake Mug | Candle | Custom Mushroom Stool
This was the shot that I couldn’t nail for 2 hours, and it’s definitely not as cohesive as other designs of mine, but I actually really love the vibe. Once we added the quilted mushroom from the art barn and the accordion trees on the coffee table (from AllModern), I was like “ok, let’s go pattern, color, and fun”. And yes, my family made the paper chain from leftover wallpaper patterned samples (but you can barely see the pattern, even in person).

Blue Barb Sofa | Round Pillow | Blanket | Velvet Lumbar Pillow | Mini Faux Pre-Lit Alpine | White Ceramic House
I LOVE this shot. The blue Barb is Barbing, and it feels inviting and fun, like these people want you to have a good time (very accurate). We’ve never had an adults-only party; we are a frat house for families with young kids, so going more whimsical feels right. And while I love a curated tree, I love our family tree more, with each ornament telling a story. “Henderson Ornament night” is where I’m shamelessly at “peak nerd,” and my kids LOVE it too, despite likely wanting to say it’s cringe:)

Elliot got home in time to jump into a shot with me – listen, I try not to involve them in my job/photos, but it’s really hard when she wants to snuggle on a pillow with me. I went a little extra this year on the mantel, which at times I was like “too much??” but most of the time I LOVE it.

Wood Bead Garland | Gingham Bow | Faux Wreath (similar) | Stocking Garland | Flocked Reindeer (similar) | Green Wood Trees (unavaliable) | Faux Garland | Wood Nutcracker | Flameless Taper Candles | Stockings (unavailable)
Most of the styling we already had, but we added the advent stocking (full of candy and kindness prompts), and we painted the black mirror a darker rose, which really softened the entire vignette in the best of ways. The faux tapers are still going strong, and the stockings from Schoolhouse are so playful and fun, while popping off the white so well. The big gingham bow is new (from Anthro), and the nutcrackers are old, from Michaels. It’s a lot, but it makes me pretty dang happy.

Rechargeable Table Lamp | Multi-Colored Lumbar | Burgundy Pillow | Striped Velvet Lumbar | Floral Tapestery Pillow | Blue Round Pillow | Pre-Lit Garland | Round Bells | Larger Bells
The little nook got an upgrade with the cutest pleated rechargeable lamp, and we switched up the pillows to pop a bit more. I’m clearly really into mushroom stools (not a typical obsession, but here we are).

Plaid Dog Beds | Pink Barb Sofa
Around 3 pm, it got so glowy and cozy (hours later, it’s even better – but so hard to shoot!). It’s busy and layered, for sure (which is why we kept the kitchen styling so simple), but when you are in the room, it feels so cozy, warm, casual, and inviting. Oscar is modeling our new Pendleton dog beds from Chewy (which are admittedly too big – I bought two “larges,” which I’m now using in our family room as floor pillows for Survivor nights in front of the fire/TV, and then I ordered mediums instead to go in here, which hadn’t arrived in time). I love the color palette of the plaid in this room, though.

I really, really love how it came together. It’s not the” Ralph Lauren” vibe I planned, but as you know, I have to shoot it again this week for a magazine (for 2026), and I’m going to use the green Alice sofas and see how hard I can lean into red/green/kitch. You don’t have to ask me twice to go all out…twice:) I’ll show you a sneak peek here, I promise (and def on stories).

Love all the color and *fun* feeling I get from these pics. Question: where is the white ruffled ceramic tray (on the coffee table with the matches and candle) from/by? I can’t find it on the site or online generally.
I’m pretty sure it’s on the Etsy gift guide posted this week!
I bought it years ago from Spartan Home (super splurgy by a local ceramicist i think). I bought it for our OG living room reveal. West elm and other makers have since done more affordable versions that we linked up! but its spectacular 🙂
Looks fantastic and I love the entryway ! My question is: why not use the “no one ever sits here” chair out of the room for the holidays and put the tree in front of that window, where it would not block the major walkway? Looks like it could fit in that area and still leave plenty of room to get into that room you use as an office o/dining room (whatever it is called).
That is a fabulous idea. It would look great!
interesting! I guess because i want to enjoy looking at it while i’m on the sofas? we love where it is, but multiple people (not having been in the space) have mentioned this. I think i’d be sad!! but maybe i wouldn’t …
I am soooo tempted by those paper trees, but every time I go to purchase, I just can’t justify the $80 price tag for *paper* lol. How durable are they? Is it that tissue-y type paper that those decorations are traditionally made of, or is it like a cardstock weight, or something in between…? I wouldn’t want them to crumple the moment my cat decides to knock them off the table!
I got mine from “Meri Meri” about 5 years ago. They don’t have the same ones on their site right now but they do have them and they are much more affordable. I have them in a little box they came in and use them every year in a place they won’t get ripped or torn.
I have a few from the first year they were a thing, from West Elm, and they’re in perfect condition. That was probably 7-8 years ago?
Yah i’ve had some of mine for years, too. they aren’t party supply crepe paper that sticks together. i think they can last for years and years and no one really plays with them whe they are up. The magnetics are strong. i think one of my magnets failed on a west elm tree i bought like 7 years ago. I just bought a bunch online that are much cheaper for the shelter (we needed like 50 of them) and i’m curious how sturdy they are going to be. they are just so easy to put up and down and store and such hi impact, great texture, etc. Really a holiday miracle, LOL.
Where did you buy them online? I’m looking for some more affordable paper trees 🙂
This is perfect for a fun family vibe! We put the kids’ Santa or matching jammie pictures in frames from every year and I love the tradition.
Would love to see with green sofas. They would tie into tree, and would feel more warmth and hygge, and christmasy. It feels like a lot going on for Scandi —- not sure I am seeing that, but the barb sofas have always seemed out of place/color/shape for me here, try with the green. Entry way is always darling with the mini trees and garland.
Same, and I think the green sofas will work better with the chaise.
we just moved them in! they do look pretty great in this scene …
Looks great!! I’m really curious about how you feel post-Christmas when it’s time to take it all down.
I really love Christmas and have lots of beautiful decorations too but I find it such a complete nightmare taking it down afterwards that some years, I just can’t do more than basic. It’s not helped by the fact that it’s usually high 30s, low 40s (ie over 100 degrees) in January where I live and it’s a hot, sweaty, itchy, slightly depressing job that seems to take ages.
Have i correctly understood that you are taking all this down next week to put up 2026 decorations? And then presumably take those down to go back to this? Or not? Why not do final ‘real’ decoration after the 2026 shoot?
Looking forward to seeing the RL version (not 100% sure what that means, but I’m kind of expecting Home Alone vibes, which I’m in to, although, again, not ideal for my climate).
PS Was really glad to see the House of Hackney chaise get a cameo. I thought it had gone the way of the dodo and was a bit sorry as it’s one of my favourite pieces. It looks awesome and I’d feel happy too with that vignette, though might be tempted to stretch out on it as well.
so we have to make it look ‘different’ for the magazine that comes out in october 2026 (so photos are due to them by June 2026). we don’t want to shoot holiday in june. So we are bringing back the green sofas and making some tweaks but certainly not taking down the tree, garlands or most of the decor. I am leaning into more greens and reds for it, but its more accessorizing. I hope that the sofa swap will help it look fresh and more traditional for the magazine. but don’t get me wrong, its still a lot of work! but being in a big magazine feature is good for business so its just part of our job 🙂 PLUS we’ve had this set up up for three weeks and then we’ll have the other one up for a month so maybe its fun?
I LOVE the wreaths in the kitchen windows! It really pulls the entire space together. Perfection! And mantels were MADE for Christmas. There is no such thing as too much. Yours is brilliant!
Love the mantel
It’s my favorite part. So so good.
ah thank you. There is a LOT on the mantel but its so fun.
It feels like you have too much pale and quirk for that room to carry the Ralph Lauren vibe, but your tv room is perfect for it. The green sofas would help lean that way but are you changing the tree decorations and mantle for that shoot?
I know! its hard. we are headed out fabric shopping now to see if we can find the perfect taffeta plaid. if not then we might just lean super vintage, but not that classic RL. we aren’t changing the tree decorations (maybe a different garland or big bow?) and tweaking the mantel (I kinda want to make one of those huge vintage bauble wreaths). But I think the garland would stay and stockings .. But its all fun stuff. Brian was LOL-ing a lot this morning when we changed out the sofas ….
I love the striped roll pillow so much, but we have two roll pillows on our sofa and people hate them, they are always on the floor. Sometimes design and comfort are hard to balance, but love the look.
haha. yep. people just move them aside, but they look so good!
It’s giving Santa’s Workshop x Willy Wonka vibes, and I love it! Colorful, playful, whimsical, but somehow balanced and not chaotic.
Ooh i love that!! and thank you 🙂 I loved being in it and honestly am sad to switch it up (but also so excited to see how red/green I can push myself).
I love this so much. I just love that you do your own thing, it’s so inspiring. I get so tired of the social media driven ‘herd’ dynamic with interiors – everything just ends up looking so boring, even if it’s beautiful. I really love that you manage to resist that. This is so fun, it totally looks like a place I want to be, and perfect for fun families. And it inspires me to make sure I’m doing what’s right for me and my house, and to dare to be original, rather than just following whatever the trend says is safe right now. All to say, thanks for being you and giving us great inspo!
Ah thank you. what a nice compliment. Believe me its so hard not to fall victim to the herd trends. or even just comparison culture which is so dangerous (and I suffer from that a LOT – seeing so many paper chains in every doorway, from every chandelier, i’m like ‘wait, is mine boring? do i need more paper chains everywhere?’. its hard!! I don’t know, as long as it feels cozy and comfortable and easy to live in with kids and pups. Anyway, thank you 🙂
100% yes
I was not really Team Barb but I really like the two colorways with more *stuff*. I feel like they come into their own with more layers of fun and color. (Still Team 2 Greens and Dane wait to see them all Christmased up but … Barb’s coming up the rankings!)
Also I love a preppy anything but really appreciate the reuse and individuality in your stylings here. We can get RLXmas anywhere, bc it’s so saturated.
well i just tried the green sofas in here and they are working but the big pops of red are just not. it feels oddly cheap! I think burgundy will be better? or even aubergine? Going for some pops of red in the entry, kitchen and sunroom (and outside) but I dunno. its not working!
Wouldn’t it be great if the Magazine shoot would allow both sets of decor photos? I bet readers would love to see the room done in two Christmas “colorways”. I realize there may be product relationships etc, that prevent that, but who doesn’t love a good side by side comparison of styles? beautiful room, and getting us in the Christmas mood!
So good! The barb couches look gorgeous for this setup
Love everything in this post – great colors! Where is the burgundy Nordic sweater from (top photo)?
It’s the Design History Long-Sleeve Crewneck Sweater in Red Pattern.
This is gorgeous! Where are your mantle garland lights from? I love the shape of them! They’re so fun!
They were from Terrain/Anthropologie, the Stargazer Gooseberry or Berry Vine Lights Nature Effects Snowberry Soft Glow
Oh how I miss the green Alice sofas, especially at this time of year. I just don’t get any feel good vibes with those dull coloured ones. That room needs the vibrancy and symmetry they gave! And the eye knew where to look. Not back and forth to each one thinking are these from a shoot that didn’t work? Would you like to know how I really feel? 🤣🎄
Where is the hot air balloon light from?
