Dressing Up Holiday Sweaters For A Party (While Still Being Comfortable)

This year I have two non-kid holiday parties to go to – like with other IRL grownup women, in stylish homes! I don’t think I’ve needed to dress up in anything beyond a holiday sweater since I lived in LA, and I miss it (we host 2-3 holiday parties/potlucks, but they are all in our home and with a ton of kids so more in the “ugly sweaters and slippers” realm which is fun in its own way). So yes, I get to dress up a bit, but I still need to be comfortable while sitting, and I still live in Portland (meaning, it’s inherently casual – no body-con sequin dresses needed). So in my attempt to be comfortable, casual, but cute in a slightly more cocktail attire way, I put together a few looks with “holiday-adjacent” clothes. Kaitlin wanted to shoot this with flash, like I’m at a party, which sounded fun to me, so you are about to see me fake drinking ginger beer by myself mid-laughter…I made some choices, folks!

Sweater | Skirt | Tights

This first one was Brian’s favorite – I hadn’t heard this level of outfit enthusiasm in a while (probably because I mostly wear sweatshirts and barrel pants). It’s definitely giving Martha in the 80s with the preppy sweater and bows (with the skin showing through the gaps). Then I paired it with a tiny pleated skirt that is so well-tailored in a plaid that feels really me. I suppose it’s my attempt towards the “Ralph Lauren Christmas,” but in a way that fits my style more. I bought the skirt and tights from Aritzia and am really loving the burgundy with the green/blue plaid. I bought the shoes from a consignment shop like 10 years ago, so sadly, I can’t link them. Oh, and I’m wearing a large in the sweater (the only size left at my local Target), which fits great as it’s pretty cropped.

Sweater | Skirt | Boots

This sweater is the softest of all of them, and I obviously like that the blue can be carried from fall through winter. The fair isle style of it gives “holiday,” for sure. But man is it comfortable, soft, and warm. 10/10. I paired it with a Sezane wool skirt and boots I’ve had for a few years (both still available). My concern here is if we have to remove our shoes (which is typical in Oregon homes). This outfit doesn’t work without the boots. Not sure what the current “house party” protocol is for shoes on/off…my feelings are that if it’s a casual party with a ton of kids, fine… shoes off – but if it’s any sort of adults-only dress-up party, shoes should be allowed, right?

Sweater | Pants

Another “conservative up top, a bit scandalous on the bottom” look. This cable knit puffed sleeve sweater has a really good cut – it’s wider at the bottom but still short, which is nice for the proportions (big puffed sleeves + long is just too much volume for me). I’ve had the pants for a while, and they are questionable for sure – super tight and flare-y at the bottom, so styling is key here to not look super cheesy.

I think this outfit could use a pop of burgundy – maybe a bow in my hair or shoes? But I felt good in it, the pants are splurgy (but are on sale right now!) and very flattering.

Cape | Skirt | Tights

Here she is, super sophisticated! A new company named Alice Walk reached out to send a few things with no obligation. Usually, I decline, not wanting more stuff I might not wear. But this cape is so beautiful that I wanted to see it in person – and it’s extremely well-made and pretty. It comes in a few solid colors as well, but of course, I was drawn to this pattern. It’s definitely splurgy (think Frank & Eileen vibes), but for someone with an office job that wants to impress, I think this is fantastic to wear around a city.

This is my first foray into the slip skirt (I know this trend has been around for a while, but this one stood out to me). It’s a gorgeous blue with black lace, and with the tights underneath, showed no bumps (this was my fear with these silk/satin slip dresses -they can show everything if not well made). I picked this up at Nordstrom, not realizing how expensive it is, but I know I’ll wear it as it’s easy to pair with sweaters for a pretty/sexy/sophisticated look.

Cardigan | Skirt | Tights

I was so comfortable in this outfit and felt pulled together in a way that I usually am not. The cardigan (also from Alice Walk) is so pretty, soft, and well-made, with pretty horn buttons. I really liked this tonal look, with the burgundy tights giving it a bit of an edge.

Pearl Necklace | Gold Pendant Necklace

I think for the party, I would likely add more layered jewelry, but this felt like a solid holiday house party outfit that checks all the boxes while being so comfortable.

Cardigan | Shirt (similar) | Leather Skirt | Tights

A fantastic burgundy cardigan that says holiday, without being bright red. I added a pop of black and white stripes, leather, and sheer black tights. BTW, I’m on a hair journey and trying not to get any highlights (it’s been a full year since I last did), so I’m doing just root touchups for now. I like being less bright blonde, but these photos are making me want to just get a few pops of brighter blonde around my face…

Sweater | Skirt | Tights | Belt | Boots

Another holiday adjacent sweater (fair isle) that is so comfy and easy to wear. I paired it with the J.Crew mini skirt, burgundy tights, and boots, but obviously so easy to dress down (leggings, denim, anything). I’m wearing an XS, so it’s pretty oversized. But super soft and lightweight – so easy to layer over or under.

Let me know if you’d want some casual/comfortable NYE looks. We always go to a family house party, but I typically wear something sparkly because I’m extra like that (while still being comfy). xx

Do I spy a leather sofa situation in the room we just saw the blue and blush Barbs in? Can’t wait for that reveal!

Thank you EHD Team for your big kid/tween gift list. I found nearly everything for my 9.5 yr old from your list for Xmas. I do the Want/ Need/ Wear/Read plus extras of course :-). Honest History subscription checked off Read and the Pillowfort alarm clock night light checked off Need. He’s going to flip for the creature in the globe and glow in the dark tape in his stocking. So many good things and tons you can get from Amazon, which makes sharing a list with loved ones easy. Appreciate y’all!

No leather sofa. That’s just the same Barb in Ocean we already saw.

The blue sofa is the velvet Barb in Ocean from this post (the flash is giving it a bit of extra shine)

The navy cardigan and slip skirt with the burgundy tights/shoes looks gorgeous! I was going to pass on the lace slip skirt trend but this outfit has me (almost) convinced.

I agree! My favorite. I wouldn’t have thought the burgundy tights would add so much. So sophisticated with a subtle holiday nod.

I just realized something your living room needs: fireplace stuff! baskets with kindling and logs! fireplace tools! containers of interesting matches! maybe a vintage fender! funky andirons! a beautiful fire screen! not all of those things, but some of them. that would give it more texture and warmth, make it look like (and actually be) more of a functional feature. ground it in the room.

They already have a screen, tool set and kindling/log basket. They just aren’t shown in this angle.

our new house has no central heating….in Nova Scotia, Canada. so we’ve had to lean into the whole English baskets of wood by the wood burner thing, and I like it! it makes the room feel comfy, both to the eye and knowing that we aren’t going to freeze. probably.

and I looked again and of course you have a screen! I like the one you have. I looked at fenders briefly and man, they’re expensive!!

The only people who wear shoes in the house in winter around here are the elderly who have trouble. A winter party here has a giant shoe pile by the door. I would feel silly walking around in tights with no shoes so I always end up in pants. So sad…

Bring on Emily on New Year’s Eve, with a few New Year’s brunch looks as well. I have a bunch of pieces in my dressy party capsule I mix and match. I do want to step it up and pull out my broaches to pin on in interesting ways. I’ve been trying to use accessories more often, earrings, pendants and possibly those broaches.

I love the fair isle style sweaters and the cape looks so beautiful! It’s fun to see all the different outfit combinations.

About shoes indoors: It’s interesting to hear that people don’t usually wear shoes indoors in Oregon. Are there other states (maybe in the north?) in the US where this is common? We don’t wear shoes indoors here in Finland either, but people usually have separate indoor party shoes for more formal parties and events here. I’d love to know if there there other places where people do this 🙂

We don’t wear shoes inside in Ohio! It definitely does throw off an outfit lol.

We don’t wear shoes inside, so if I am wearing tights I bring my Glerup charcoal wool slippers. I have thought about indoor party shoes, but you’d have to explain to the host that you only wear them indoors and would be the odd man out. I like that it is custom in Finland.

Atlanta here! In the south, we absolutely keep our shoes on for dinner parties, cocktail parties, holiday parties … all the parties. It would be wildly impolite to ask someone to ruin their outfit. If you’re hosting, you’re mopping the day after. Comes with the territory. We’re careful in households with crawling babies and young kids, but that’s for close friends and family hangs, not dress up events with hors d’oeuvres.

Also worth noting that we don’t have the kind of winters that mean guests would track in snow, salt, or slush. Also fairly car dependent, so your shoes are really only going from the car to the driveway and back.

I’m in Minnesota and we take them off. Probably because most of us wear boots all winter. I always bring flats or slippers to wear though because my feet are always cold.

We don’t wear shoes inside in Vermont either in the winter, but people usually bring indoor shoes. I have a pair of slip on slides with faux fur lining that have been my go to slip on’s for the holidays. Barefoot with a dressy outfit always feels weird, but wearing your shoes here is a big faux paus

I would love NYE outfit inspiration! We host a casual house party with kids running around… and no one will be wearing shoes… or in our case we will be having an indoor -outdoor party and the outdoor portion will be in our yard/firepit so I will be slipping on clogs or mud-friendly boots…

I love these outfit ideas. I just recently got a similar plaid pleated skirt and LOVE it. I would love to know what you mean by doing root touchups, not highlights. I am in a similar hair journey, not getting highlights for a while to see if I like my natural color. What do you mean by root touchups? I love your hair color as it is. My vote would be to keep as-is, no highlights around your face!

The gold necklace was the Coin Medallion Pendant Necklace by Universal Thread from Target a while back. Looks like the pearl necklace is possibly the Baroque pearl necklace from J Crew?

Two things. Who’s going to be the one who tells Emily that the reason Brian likes that first outfit is because that skirt is giving Britney Spears vibes? 😏 Just saying.

Also, I am struck by the number of you who say that you insist that your guests all take their shoes off when they come inside? I live in the Northeast. I don’t know anyone who makes grown up people take their shoes off at a party. It’s a party. The shoes are part of the outfit. This is reminding me of a Sex and the City episode. Hmmmm ..

I love how you look in everything…..and I’m surprised I am responding to this , if someone wants me to take off shoes at their home, of course I would …and I don’t like to be judgemental , esp Online, and, I also understand weather constraints ….but i so dislike asking for my shoes to be removed , it’s a version of putting plastic on furniture I want my home to be used and people to feel comfortable and they can spill red wine and the floors can get messed up and it means a warm home and a life well lived.

from CA Oh, we do not ask our guests to remove their shoes, Our extended family members also have shoe free homes so we limit it to the family who automatically remove shoes without prompting.. There are people, however, who remove their shoes of their own accord, We also adhere to that policy if we stay in rentals such as VRBO or AirnB or attend open houses.
