Ah, marble. One of the most expensive and yet impactful finishes you can add to a room. It’s a material that has the power to make your space really sing – the power to take your space from an off-pitched soloist singing a cappella to a harmonizing choir with a full orchestra. However, you’ll likely have to give up your firstborn to pay for the slab and the fabrication, so picking the right stone is a BIG decision. There’s also a veeeerrry fine line between choosing a marble or stone that will date your home or make it feel modern – and that can very much change in just a few years’ time too. What a fun gamble! I, like everyone and their mother, LOVE a classic Carrara, Soapstone, or Calcutta Marble and the timelessness in those choices (although I go back and forth on if Calcutta Viola is the prettiest stone I’ve ever seen or if it’s going to be a 2026 trend marker in 10 years). But sometimes (especially when the price tag is in the thousands), you might want something a little unique and fresh, if you will. Maybe something that not everyone else has in their home. That’s why I believe rich, vibrant, colored marble has been taking off more now than ever – specifically burgundy and blue marble and stone.

It’s true: we’re going BOLD these days!! In the last 10 years, we completely cancelled the color gray and swung the pendulum to warm woods and bright, rich colors instead. It was a necessary change, IMHO – gray, if not done right, can be so cold and sad as a color, so it was about time we made our homes feel warmer. BUT as someone who just moved into a home with 80% gray hard finishes, it can feel overwhelming to figure out how to swap it out and what materials are the right choice for our house. Now, if you, too, have a decent amount of gray that’s very hard to change in your home, you can also ABSOLUTELY make it work – take a look at this makeover I did earlier this year, where we worked around my parents’ gray vinyl flooring. We’ve added a lot of warmth in our furnishings so far, but I no longer live in a rental (wild!!), so I am very excited to take the next step, start some renovations, and give these hard finishes some more personality.
I am, however, mildly afraid of choosing something I’ll end up not loving in a few years – as I’m sure many of us are. And the even scarier part is how freakin expensive hard finishes can be! It feels like you have to LOVE EVERY FINISH SO MUCH otherwise…why are you spending the time and money to renovate?? So, I’m in the initial research/dreaming phase to see what makes my heart sing, and I must say my Pinterest board has been popping off lately. My plan is to pin what initially makes my heart go “OOOH!” then wait and revisit it all in a couple of weeks or months and see which images still have that same impact on my heart (it’s a very emotional process). And then see what I can actually source that won’t cost as much as college tuition 🙂
The color palette for my whole home is heavy in the burgundy, blue, and walnut department, with some guest appearances by cognac, ochre, and butter yellow. Part of this is because I’ve always loved these colors; another part of this (I’m sure) is that these colors are very much trending at the moment. Some might disagree, but I believe we’re always at least a little bit influenced by what’s trending, whether we’re aware of it or not. I’m trying to avoid putting the SUPER trendy colors in the hard finishes (ie, butter yellow), but the color palette has just kinda naturally formed with what we already have and love – so I’m excited to see how it evolves. While I’ve been searching for inspo, I’ve been pinning a ton of bathrooms and kitchens with fun marble choices, so I’m going to give you a look into some of my Pinterest board to show you some of the unique stones that I’ve been seeing pop up right now – and I want your thoughts and feelings!!

Burgundy (and brown) stone is HOT right now – I’ve seen designers using these left and right. I’m also personally leaning in hard with the burgundy stone already, haha. I’m starting my closet renovation first (our clothes don’t fit with the single rod we have in our current closet, so we are adding in some cabinets, more rods, and shelving!), so you will be seeing that soon! We’re doing something unconventional and are putting tile on the floor with a rug on top. It’s a long story, but basically, it’s a small square footage, and the carpet we loved was going to be more expensive for us, which was wild. SO I was going to do a tumbled breccia vino checkerboard tile but then the order timeline got all messed up (another long story I’ll dive into later but let this be your warning to not order this tile) so we’re going a different direction but I still LOVE this burgundy-colored stone (and clearly it’s been popular because it keeps going out of stock!)
Most of these examples are Rosso Levanto, which is a stone I love that is very popular right now. You might remember that I had this Rosso Levanto marble coffee table in my last apartment, and OF COURSE I brought it with me to my new place, but one of the bolts to hold it together broke during the move and it just didn’t look quite right in our new living room. But the marble is sooooo gorgeous so I’m trying to figure out if there’s a way to give it new life and potentially see if we can turn it into a vanity or sink in our powder bath or something else fun (might be a crazy expensive pipe dream but we’ll seeee).
My favorite application of this is typically in a bathroom with tonal burgundy and woods around it. It just gives such a rich, velvety vibe that feels so elegant.
This marble can be a lot for me sometimes – I feel like sometimes it can be too much all over a room (like in a kitchen) but I’ve seen a few examples (like here and here) where I actually love it as a backsplash so I go back and fourth. I still think I love it in bathrooms the most but what do you guys think??
This is the more controversial of the two if you ask the EHD team – it all started when Kate Hudson’s kitchen reveal was published on AD and people on the internet had A LOT to say about the Blue Cristello marble. Whether you like it or not, it’s popping up a lot right now – that marble was seen again on House Beautiful here and I feel like it’s a fun one to chat about. The EHD team had opinions when we saw it for the first time. I personally, love a blue stone when it’s a bit more understated like a Blue Quartzite (this one is super pretty too) and was like “we need to chat about this on the blog because blue stone is actually everywhere right now and I have A TON of examples pinned I want to share!!” So that’s what sparked me writing this post! Let me share some these said blue marble pins and let me know what you think about this trending stone:
Now, first off, some of these blue stones are technically green/blue and can lean kind of in the middle like the one at Troye Sivan’s house above 🙂 Green marble and stone in my eyes it has never gone out of style (like the pretty quartzite in the mountain house!!) – so maybe that’s why the more blue-colored stones are having their moment right now.
A lot of these stones can also lean a bit more muted and gray, which I find really pretty as well (and as long as they have some warm undertones too they can be timeless since they’re just so cool IMHO). What I love about these blue stones is that they mimic ocean waves in a lot of ways which is really peaceful and would work especially well where I’m at since I just moved closer to the beach!!
Anyway, it was fun showing you guys some of the inspo I’ve been looking at. What’s your take on these stones?? Are they rightfully cool and popular or are you against them? Is it worth putting these in a home? Drop your takes below!! Thanks for reading and hope you enjoyed that fun eyecandy 🙂
