Welcome to the very first day of fall! Typing those words feels wild (as it does every year), but our excitement is palpable. I can say, at least for me, fall is already hitting hard with a stacked calendar, which is wonderful and slightly daunting. One thing, as design lovers, that truly helps us feel a sense of control and puts a punctuation mark on the end of summer is the inherent pull to make your home cozy for fall. I’m not suggesting new furniture or all-new bedding, but instead those little decor pieces (accent pillows, throw blankets, a new vase, etc.) The “top layer,” if you will. If you are looking for some new pieces or don’t even know where to start, you are in the right place. I decided to take five EHD rooms (some easier to “fall-ify” than others) and suggest some great additonals/swaps that, if purchased, would make them feel perfectly in season. Where did I look to find such a wide and amazing variety? It’s most definitely Wayfair. Cozy For Fall: Modern Living Room

I had to start with my own living room because I thought, why not test-drive some ideas to make the most of styling my home and getting it cozy for fall. Now, I wouldn’t say my home doesn’t already have an autumnal color palette, but I know I could kick it up a notch. Looking at this photo, I actually want to tone down the green and some of the blue and add in a lot more plum/burgundy. Here’s the potential plan:

• Swap all of the pillows and throw
• Add colorful taper candles to the candelabra
• Swap metal tray for something woven
• Swap large blue-toned vase on the mantle with a plum or burgundy one.
• Add real fall branches to that vase:)

And tada! Here are my picks. The color palette is really strong, so it has a presence in the space but not so much that it will take it over. I love the warm softness these tones bring, but that more muted blue ball pillow still speaks to the blues that exist in the room already. Also notice all of the texture…very fall:) I actually didn’t even notice until I was writing this how “stripes” is also a theme! Different sizes, different orientations, but they all work as siblings, not twins.

Cozy For Fall: Colorful Eclectic Living Room

I chose Caitlin’s incredible living room because I thought this one would be even more of a challenge! It has bold, colorful accents, postmodern shapes, and a vintage wicker elephant! But once I took a deeper look and scrolled through the pages of Wayfair, I got very excited for the potential fall refresh version. Here’s what the plan would be:

• Swap all of the pillows and add a throw
• Put away brightly colored books
• Swap tray for something darker
• Change colored flowers and pink branches
• Swap table lampshade
• Swap larger planter

For this one, I mainly tried to get a little more playful with the shapes and patterns to speak more to the style of the room. The blue pillow has that incredible scalloped edge for the sofa, the green throw has a great pattern, and the color speaks to the curtains and greenery. Then the burgundy lumbar pillow is a perfect color contrast to the white swivel chairs and is still colorful but more muted:) I’m pretty obsessed with those pillar candles; the darker tray feels more visually grounding for this season, and how could you not love that glass vase and its shape? Oh, and how could I forget the checkered lampshade. It’s a bold swap (ideally for the back table lamp), but I feel it’s a fun and very impactful swap.

Cozy For Fall: Farmhouse Living Room

Ah, the farmhouse living room. The easiest way to think about making your home cozy for fall is that you want to deepen the color palette, add texture, and maybe throw in a fall hue or two (think burgundies, rusts, browns, greens, deep blues), especially if you have a mostly neutral space. Emily’s living room is, of course, not neutral and already has some of those tones, so I just made some light swaps for an early fall feel. Here are some of my suggestions:

• Swap some of the lighter pillows and blankets for darker ones
• Swap the table lampshade for a warmer burlap
• Swap the white vase on the mantle for a darker one
• Add darker, cool pillar candles

P.S. We tend not to be “pumpkin-forward” in how we decorate for fall, but if that’s something you love to add in, we love that too:)

As my first “swap” suggested, I’d take some of her lighter-toned pillows and replace them with these. Her darker leather one and round disc can stay. I’d also take her wonderful throw blankets, save them for the spring, and then use this beautiful, warm brown blanket and heavy, cozy knit one. Not everything needs to be super dark; big texture, as we’ve always said, is just as important and impactful. Speaking of, I love that big brown vase for her mantle with some of those fall branches from her property. Since we are deepening the tones of the mantle, let’s switch those brighter green candlesticks with these olive-colored ones and also add those plum-colored pillar candles to either the coffee table or on top of the vintage MCM cabinet in the back. Emily already has a great light tan lampshade, but to add a little more warmth, this deeper-toned cutie would be pretty in the day and awesome lit at night. Speaking of a little more light, there’s something about a classic black cast iron candleholder that screams fall to me, and that one is so elegant and simple. It could go on any little table in this room! Shall we move to the kitchen?

Cozy For Fall: Farmhouse Kitchen

I think the kitchen is a really fun place to create “cozy for fall” energy. Outside of curling up on the sofa with a book or movie, the kitchen is the most fall space. I mean, it’s where all the good smells and tasty food we love come from! You swap a few decorative pieces, grab some fall-toned kitchen dishtowels, and you’re pretty set. Here’s how I’d mix in fall to the farmhouse kitchen:

• Swap the bowl on the island for a darker, textured natural-material bowl
• Switch out the round cutting board on the island for a longer one to add larger fall produce
• Add a cute fall-toned kitchen towel
• Swap some accessories to deepen the color palette

Of course, the Emily Henderson kitchen doesn’t need a lot of swaps to make it feel season-appropriate, but I found some very good pieces on Wayfair that I thought would be fun to dream about in there. To start with, the island: that dark bowl and live-edge long tray for maybe some squash, figs, etc. Then next to the lamp, she could switch the cream bowl with this beautiful wood one. Again, same function, deeper colors. Moving up to the shelves, I love these iron candlestick holders along with these terra cotta (or pumpkin;)) colored taper candles. They work with her vintage Tiffany lamp as well as the dish towels I found. These towels are perfect because they also have that deep blue that talks to the rest of the blue already in the kitchen. Now these salt and pepper grinders are inexpensive, but wow, are they a beautiful statement (I also saw them in a high-end decor shop in Raleigh when I was visiting Alryn, and the quality was very apparent). They come in a ton of colors, but I love the idea of that burgundy and blue together. Plus the shape is so playful! Lastly, I just loved this pitcher, which could temporarily replace her black one, and that deep red vase is a great shape and would bring together the whole color palette.

Cozy For Fall: Soft Traditional Kitchen

Let’s do one more kitchen for good measure, yes? Ok. This green and pink always puts a smile on my face when I see it. But that color palette doesn’t scream “cozy for fall,” right? Agreed. So to Wayfair I went and found pieces that were in the same palette, but added more color depth. I’m talking darker plums, deeper greens, more copper, darker wood, and some black. That’s really the whole plan. Let’s just jump right into the products!

Here it is! So much of the white dinnerware stays because, for most people, we are not switching out our dinner plates seasonally. However, swapping those white pitchers for this solid green one or this dark copper beauty is easy and adds instant coziness. Adding those wood candlestick holders and green taper candles on the top shelf would be another really pretty add. Then on the counter, I love the idea of more copper, so switching those wood and stone canisters with some of these copper ones would also be something I’d love to do. On the stovetop, if you love to cook, getting another affordable Dutch oven that’s in that gorgeous deep red would work beautifully with the pink wallpaper and other pink-toned accents, as well as the gold knob working with the cabinet hardware. Such a win-win! The other little high shelves next to the hood could don this speckled pitcher and glass plum vase. Finally, the island would look stunning with this low, wide black vase and scalloped tray. Again, it’s taking the color palette that’s already there and deepening it with fall-forward tones.
