Happy Sunday! So while we are still enjoying our weekend, we are all pretty excited about tomorrow. That’s right! No Sunday scaries over here. Why?? Well if you’ve been following along this week then you know Emily is revealing the FARMHOUSE LIVING ROOM!!! It’s been almost exactly four years since she and Brian first looked at the property. It always feels so slow until all of a sudden it’s done and you can’t believe it. And actually, we are so excited to show you that we wanted to reveal Emily’s YouTube vlog-style video a WHOLE DAY BEFORE the post goes lives. Check it out HERE then come back for all of the links!
Wait first here’s a sneak peek of the video. Can you tell we’re excited?? (Just wait for the little ad to run)
This week’s house tour may be the prettiest tiny house we’ve seen yet. On an idyllic farm in Malibu, this 120 sq foot home is full of organic wood, vintage accents and a lot of light! Go check it our here:)
From Emily: I LOVE this giveback makeover that Yellow Brick Home did for an addiction and recovery nonprofit in Chicago. The before and afters are incredible and that shade of blue is PERFECT. Many cheers for blogs that are prioritizing giving back into their schedule – I know it’s not as easy or effortless as it looks. Thanks, Kim and Scott for being an inspiration.
From Jess: So I guess I just buy everything Emily and my coworkers recommend because I bought the red swimsuit that Emily loves from Andie Swim. But first a review of a previous purchase. While I definitely liked the Ta3 swimsuit I bought, it just didn’t feel like “me” when I put it on. I also probably could have gone for the “short torso” option instead of the regular. Sadly, it just wasn’t a “hell, yes”. But I’ve seen friends (like Caitlin) in them and they look INCREDIBLE!!! On the flip side, when I tried on the Andie suit, it was the first one-piece I think I’ve ever truly loved and felt cool in (and sexy depending on how many snaps I choose to undo;)). I’ve always been a bikini gal but having an awesome one-piece is so great.
Also From Jess: I will be making this recipe ALL SUMMER LONG. It’s so unbelievably delicious. I’ve already made the “tomato vinegarette” part for some salads. 10000/10.
Shea McGee’s first solo design book is available for preorder and let’s just say it’s so beautiful. It’s no secret that Shea knows how to design a beautiful home, so if you love her style and would like some expert guidance she will take you through every room in a home. Then when you’re done getting all her wisdom, it’s the perfect beautiful coffee table book. Form and function:) Again, it’s available for preorder now!
From Arlyn: I’ve been trying to be a hat person for the greater part of my adult life but I’ve just never had the confidence to leave the house in one unless I was going to the beach. Hat culture is so strong in LA and every time I see someone in a fabulous chapeau, I get inspired to try again. Especially now that it’s SO SUNNY and HOT, and I take my daughter on many walks a day. So when I saw how cute Molly Madfis from Almost Makes Perfect looked when she shared this Wallaroo sun hat she bought on vacation, I decided to take the plunge. AND I LOVE IT. It’s packable (!!!), lightweight, comes in tons of colors, adjustable on the inside to get a good fit, and low-key enough that I don’t feel super try hard. Like, I can literally just throw it on with my leggings and a T-shirt and feel fine, but also it would look very cute with a sun dress. Not bad for under $50, if I say so myself.
From Caitlin: Did anyone else happen to catch the “HGTV is making our homes boring and us sad, one study says” article making the rounds last week? The sample size is pretty tiny, but I can VERY MUCH relate to the sentiment (and since you’re a design blog reader, maybe you can, too?). On one hand, I’m super familiar with the pressure of wanting your home to be appealing and inviting to the masses – I’m definitely the type who will not let anyone into my home if I don’t feel like it’s good or “ready” enough (and even when it is “designed,” this is still me in the hours before anyone arrives). But on the other hand, I’m grateful for so many mass-market design resources because they’ve helped me find and explore my own style! My IRL friends are not as interested in design as I am and so I’m dying to hear others’ opinions – what say you???
Also From Caitlin: Um, hey, PEOPLE ARE SO SMART. Scientists at Purdue have created a paint so white that it can reduce the surface temperature of a roof, thereby cooling the building beneath it significantly and reducing air conditioning needs by up to FORTY PERCENT. The kicker: if this “ultra-white paint were to coat between 1 percent and 2 percent of the Earth’s surface, slightly more than half the size of the Sahara, the planet would no longer absorb more heat than it was emitting, and global temperatures would stop rising.” Naturally, there are a few major roadblocks (c’est la vie) – the necessary materials need to be mined, which still contributes to climate change…but man, can you imagine how incredible it would be to cool your entire home by 8 degrees in the day and 19 degrees at night by simply painting your roof? Extraordinary.
From Mallory: This is the only water bottle that actually makes me drink water and after having it for a year I can successfully say I’m getting my daily amount (and then some lol). It’s on sale now if u wanna snag one! I highly recommend getting the one with the straw lid for ease. Like an adult sippy cup :)
See y’all tomorrow for the beautiful photos and more of Em’s thoughts on the living room reveal! xx

OMG Yes! Please do a youtube series!
Love, love, love the living room. It’s a triumph!
Didn’t need to wait till tomorrow, just saw the Youtube video :)
Soooooo lovely !
WOW!! LOVED THE YOUTUBE VIDEO!!!! ?
Caitlin, I agree re: HGTV. It’s #all.the.same.same.
Arlyn, is that sunhat Australian? ? “Walleroo” Vute!
They’re designed in Australia…had to be with a nsme like Walleroo! ?
Watched the video and have to comment to say I love your living room! Just beautiful!
Best surprise ever!!! The living room is perfection and I truly relished every frame of the video. More more more!
I stopped watching HGTV years ago because I quickly became bored with the generic, quickie makeovers. I really really wish the home design world would create a show for interior design that is as slow paced, relatable, inspiring, comforting, yet risk taking as the Great British Bake Off is for baking. Enough with the tense competition BS. Enough with the super-rich home tours (that all manage to look blank and generic). Enough with the fake surprise two-day reno reveals. Just show me good design. The closest I’ve come to a series like that was the five-episode interview with Matilda Goad on House and Garden’s Design Notes where she talked about her home and her design philosophy.
Same. I stopped watching a while ago due to beige, white, grey, open plan, ship lap overload, and the deadly dull conformity of slight variations on the exact same theme. Only HGTV show I am interested in continuing to watch is Brett Waterman’s Restored because he is a passionate conservationist and I get to learn about gorgeous arts and crafts homes. Devol Kitchen was good since I always liked their esthetic but it is rolling into the same same territory, perhaps too much of a good thing. The only show I have consistently liked, literally for decades, is This Old House and Ask This Old House, due to the quality of their work, taking many episodes to finish one project, and much more professional explanations of process, which is what I like about this site. Otherwise it is you tube because of the range of material covered. There are so many opportunities to see good design and new ways to think about building communities through sustainable and good design such as co-living, co-housing, cooperatives etc. For instance I have always thought it would be great to see a show built around “intentional” communities, designing a co-living space for single mother’s… Read more »
“Restored” is great, love it
The most recent season of This Old House – focused on the blue house they renovated in Atlanta – is our neighbor! You can see our house (tan two-story) across the little side street in a few shots!
Oops. Just recalled Devol’s For the Love of Kitchens and Restored, formerly on HGTV, is on Magnolia. Well there you go. So much for HGTV. The magnolia folks certainly improved on the HGTV recipe.
I really liked Makeover by Monday on Discovery Plus. Felt like the old-school HGTV shows that I loved as a kid (in the 90s/00s). Second season just finished filming. In general, I’ve liked a lot of Discovery Plus design shows because they don’t have set 30-minute segments – they’re often just as long as they need to be. There’s a show that interviews interior designers on their specialties/what makes “home” for them that was really good too, and several “Welcome to where I call home” type shows where people live in converted schools or barbershops or whatever that were great.
Loved the YouTube video! Like having a morning chat over coffee about the living room. And, I learned so much, even though I’ve been following the renovation since the beginning. Well done, Ems.
Forgot to say: The video is terrific. The living area as a whole is just sooooo interesting and beautifully designed yet not intimidating or cold. It feels fresh and different from the LA house and the mountain house yet I can see elements of both in this space.
LOVED the video of the living room! Your enthusiasm really comes across, Emily, and the room comes to life in the video. I love how the room turned out. Caitlin- I saw the headline and did not read the article about how HGTV is ruining us- I’ve read too many with similar titles and they are always disappointing as “journalism”. But I do feel the need for my house to be perfect if anyone is coming inside- and yet when I go into others’ houses, I can see they don’t have the same concerns! Or maybe just not the same discernment. Also, I’m all for finding as many solutions to global warming as possible! But here in Seattle, I not only want my house to stay cool in the summer; I want it to stay warm in the winter- so not sure how that works. Also, The Art of Home is going onto my wish list! Lots of great stuff today! Thank you!
Heat pumps! They handle both the heating and cooling, and run on electricity:)
Agree about the sameness of makeovers on HGTV! I can hardly stand to watch it lately for that reason but have better luck with Magnolia, especially “For the Love of Kitchens” and “Capturing Home” (on Saturday afternoons) which just came back for a 2nd season with a great Spanish-style house in LA.
What does everyone think about coating residential roofs with white paint? I’d like to see it done *stat* on commercial buildings, maybe even parking lots and playgrounds to reduce the heat island effect right away. (Although the glare…hmm.) The shallow side of me worries that on a colonial house like mine it would look nuts. But given how this summer is going, in a little while I might not care!
I have also been enjoying all the shows on Magnolia, slower paced, more thoughtful and seem to be for real people with real lives.
Covering roofs with solar panels is even better!
PS here is another point of view on the white-paint topic
And then all the mining of titanium to make that white paint white.
Love the video!!! Living room looks great, so inviting and comfortable, yet elevated. Love the details you shared about your process, especially how you keep it from looking like a thrift store by having a cohesive color palette. Bravo Emily!
Yes to more video even though I could not sign up and follow, as I don’t have a Gmail account.
Agree about HGTV. Boring. Design done with cheap stuff.
@Caitlin My IRL friends aren’t much into design either…we both clearly need to expand our friend groups! Also – that white paint sounds amazing. I wanna try it so bad that I’m sitting here mocking up what my SFV ranch house with a classic hipped roof would look like with a flat roof LOL
