Power Couples: Sofas and Coffee Tables

Back by popular demand, we have another edition in our “Power Couples” series. In case you missed the first few (dining tables/chairs, beds/nightstands, chandeliers/sconces, desks/office chairs) be sure to check those out. But if you are new to the series then let me give you a little background before we dive in. We started the power couples series to help take some of the stress and anxiety out of the furniture buying process for you. Because, well, there is nothing worse than buying a coffee table that you love and a sofa that you love and then finding out that they may stylistically look good together but functionally or scale-wise they don’t work.

Henderson/Emery

Not only can it be a costly mistake, but realizing that your new coffee table is 4 inches too short for the scale of your sofa after they have been delivered and unpacked in your living room is a total bummer. So – let me introduce you to 34 combinations of sofas and coffee tables that are 100% guaranteed to look good together. This means the colors, scales, styles, and finishes have been stared at for a long time by the EHD crew, and we have made sure that you can buy knowing that there won’t be an issue.

When it comes to selecting the perfect coffee table for your sofa and visa versa there are a few rules that you should remember. Your coffee table should be at least half the width of your sofa (if not more). Typically you will want to find something that is 2/3rds the length of your sofa. Next, you will want to make sure that your coffee table is no shorter than 4″ from the seat of your sofa. That means if you measure from the floor to the sofa seat and it is 16″ your coffee table should be no shorter than 12″ tall. Just as the right heels make the dress, the right coffee table can make the sofa. So without further ado, here are 34 combos that we pulled together that are all available online and ready for your buying pleasure.

While we have been burdened with expectations of a successful successor to the LG G6, we have been saying for some time that this new phone will be the one phone which will rule them all.
LG has already been on a roll and we expect that the G7 will also be up to the mark. Want to know more about it? Check out this website https://www.lgg7s.com/

I’d love to see sectionals and coffee table pairings… I am currently searching for one, but have no idea what proportions would be best to fit!

Yes! That’s what I have. And then a loveseat, so it basically forms a U shape. I’ve been using the cala coffee table from world market…it looks small, but nything bigger would be hard to move around to get seated.

Would have loved to see a sectional in there. I have a light grey Peggy sectional from West Elm and have always struggled with the right coffee table. I feel like a lot of America has sectionals. This could be a very handy tip for us!

I second the request for sectional and coffee table pairings. Even if it isn’t a full roundup, knowing some proportions would be really helpful! Just like at the beginning of the post where it specifies that the coffee table should be 2/3 the length of the couch and no more than 4” shorter than the seat, how does this apply to sectionals?

Add me as a +1 for this request! I have a chaise sectional and while my standard rectangular coffee table looks fine, I want to a comfy chair to the room and a round coffee table. I struggle with the proportions of a round table. My sofa is 9ft long, and most round tables seem to be 36″, which seems quite undersized. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I also struggled with this exact issue… we just recently bought a round table that has a slightly smaller nesting table under it. I’m a little biased of course, but i feel like its the best option we have found. Its nice having the ability to make it ‘longer’ or pull one table towards the comfy chair or just tuck it away when the couch is full of people so you have more leg room. https://www.allmodern.com/Masuda-Nesting-Coffee-Table-BRSD6236.html comes in a few color options too

Though id love to see a roundup from EHD and see what other options there are =)

bandwagon for sectionals. For those interested, chrislovesjulia.com – their basement u shaped sectional with a round coffee table seems to work well.

Having a great dane in a small house really puts a damper on my decoarting fun. No coffe table for me because of his giant 4 legged self.

Great pairings. How about a sofa and ottoman/soft bench round up? We love to put our feet up while watching TV.

#20, #23 and #29 are gooooood, but they all are! I recently had a local guy make a pretty basic coffee table for me (similar to #27), and then I had the top upholstered (I’m in the baby making/family building phase of life). It ended up being only a little more expensive than one I found and loved on Wayfair. It worked out nice since I get give the guy exact measurements that worked with my couch.

Emily,

1, 6, and 32 were my faves! We have a problem – my husband is 6’3″ and can’t seem to find an office setup that doesn’t give him all kinds of pain. We tried a standup desk and that gave him feet problems. His regular sitting desk gives him neck pain. Have you thought about writing a post about office comfort and setup to avoid aches and pains?

Great post, thanks. Just wondering, how do the rules you have apply to sectionals?

I have an amazing vintage coffee table I bought with my current sofa. The sofa turned out to be horribly uncomfortable and I’m considering replacing it with a sectional but I can’t bare to part with my coffee table. So I would love to be able to use these rules to look for a replacement sectional that would work with the current table. Thanks!

What do you recommend for the sofa with a chaise attached? I feel like I really can only have a round coffee table approximately 30″ diameter.

I have a very rectangular sofa – like 7, 19 and my side chairs are also very boxy – Would you agree that this should be offset by a round / oval / organic coffee table… so that i dont feel like im living in a lego set up!?!

Oh, so many good ones! What fun! I like 1, 2, 3, 9, 12, 13, 20, 28. Going to have to remember this candelabra site. 😀

I have a chesterfield and I paired it with a round table. What happened to me is exactly what you mentioned–it arrived and was too small ( I honestly didn’t measure. It LOOKED big on the site. Rookie move). But I went with it! It was a Moorish brass table. Perhaps the vintage oval spider leg variety would have been better!

I HAVE THAT BLUE SOFA FROM THE FIRST PHOTO !!

This is validation if I ever saw it. I feel so proud !

The round-up is amazing. I wish I were in the market for a coffee table, because so many options are covetable… but, I have a beautiful and expensive coffee table already and I try to declutter my house, or at least not clutter it more. Am I the only one to dream I have a new room opening right into my house so I have more space to have fun with ?
