Creating An Outdoor Oasis At The Carly With AllModern – The Case For The Matching Set

My favorite Oregon Wine Country Boutique Stay, The Carly, has the most gorgeous interiors (seen here), but their back patio sat empty all winter. And while that’s fine for the rainy months, with summer approaching, I had to insert myself to remedy it. The owners are two of my closest friends, and I benefit from this as well (we are celebrating Brian’s mom’s 80th birthday here this summer). So I partnered with AllModern to furnish it, in a matter of weeks, with furniture that is not only visually appropriate but will last and last. We wanted to create the outdoor oasis this property deserved.

4 Piece Aluminum Outdoor Set | Terracotta Side Tables | Pillows | Bowl Planter | Large Planter Pot | Black Rectangular Planter | Gray Rectangular Planter | Tabletop Pot

The structure is a really dark, almost black green, and the setting is very wooded and green, so I knew that we didn’t want anything too bright or white. I found this set in powder-coated black aluminum and gray outdoor fabric that was perfect. It provided enough contrast to be interesting visually, but from a distance, it really integrated into the surroundings. The set can be bought individually or à la carte.

I loved the proportions of it for this property. It’s a larger scale, feeling really grounded and sturdy. The seat cushions are firm and feel like they’ll last for 10 years, which is what you want out in the PNW. I tried so hard to make this work at our house, but the style just didn’t fit our flagstone landing pads.

The gray performance fabric is perfect – light enough that it contrasts the black frame, but not too light, which will get pretty dirty up here (which might be fine for families, but not for hotel guests). It feels modern, and yet we styled it to be really inviting and casual. I accented with these rust and wood tones that played off the copper interiors of the exterior sconces on the house. The side tables are heavy and super high quality (and I have other versions of them that are left out year-round and are in perfect condition).

I framed it in with potted plants from Dennis’ 7 Dees, with pots from AllModern. I’d like to brag about my plant styling talents in the low, wide bowl planters (that no one should copy). I think it turned out so pretty considering I have no idea what I’m doing (their gardener will continue to tend to them or plant them where they can live).

The planters from AllModern were excellent. That big ceramic planter is so wide and could absolutely hold a big cherry or lemon tree.

I love how well it integrates with the location, and while they might need to add an umbrella in the summer, it’s going to expand their use outside so much.

The outdoor pillows add a lot of warmth and texture to the more modern and contemporary set. I really kept it simple, but it all worked together so well.

Outdoor Chairs | Outdoor Dining Table | Solar Lanterns | Candlestick Holders | Outdoor Salad Plates | Outdoor Dinner Plates | Wooden Footed Bowl | Outdoor Wine Glasses | Outdoor Drink Glasses | Napkins

Now up on the patio, I continued the dark theme. A black aluminum table with stackable chairs that are generous in size and super classic in shape.

They plan on ordering an additional table for long dinner parties, but trying to store 16 chairs is hard unless they stack. So these heavy resin charis are so durable and strong, and can be stacked and stored so easily (not covered, LOL, you know how I feel about that).

It started raining about 2 hours into our shoot, thus all the drops on the deck. Big shout-out to Kaitlin for barreling through. I will say that we continued to dry off the surfaces, and having it not be wood was a real dream. The metal and resin will fare so well out here.

AllModern also sells a lot of unbreakable outdoor plates and cups that we styled the table with. They look absolutely real, and they feel nice and weighty in your hands (not cheap and light).

The gaps in the metal table allow for the rain to fall through, which is crucial to reducing the water buildup. It was honestly a dream to wipe up.

We surrounded the dining area with more potted plants – my whole “create walls to give a sense of a room” theory. The tall gray and black planters are so tall and have a shelf inside for shorter plants (so you don’t have to add 4 bags of soil to fill them up). They are super lightweight, but they look like metal. So they are easy to move around and rearrange (or store in the winter). The terracotta one is clay and definitely the real deal – heavier and super high quality.

There she is – praying through her teeth that we can get all the shots before the totally unexpected storm. Never trust Oregon weather, folks!!

A huge thanks to AllModern for partnering on this shoot. They have a huge variety of colors and styles, so while this gray and black worked really well here, if you are into white and teak, they have an exceptional curated collection. Thanks to The Carly for having the most stunning location. You can rent it for luxury weekends, retreats, or weddings here.

Petition for a post about how this sort of post/shoot comes together. Who in the team does what to assist? What happens during the day of? Who sets the table? Who planned for that hellebore in the middle of the table? What was the planning regarding what you wore for the shoot? Whose straw hat is that hanging off the back the the chairs, was it specifically planned for or a ‘maybe’ item that made it into the shot. Etc etc

Soup to nuts. Take me behind the scenes, please! Maybe hourly diary entries of the shoot day. I would LOVE to know what goes on to pull this together. It’s a beautiful result. 😍

The Carly really is stunning. What color paint or stain is the outside- that almost black dark green?

This is going to sound weird but does any one know why the plant company is called Dennis7 dees? I dont get it and it seems like a mouth full to say and remember. There has to be a story there. Am I just dense?

“It all started in 1927 when Bernard and Florence Esch launched a small maintenance business and a wholesale rhododendron nursery in Oregon. In 1956, their daughter Merle married Robert Snodgrass, and they had seven children, all with “D” names. Robert operated the family garden center, nursery, and landscaping business, which he called Seven Dees, of course!
In 1975, Robert’s sons Dennis and Drake took over the business. David ended up purchasing the landscaping portion from Dennis and then partnered with brothers Dean and Drew.
Today, Dennis’ 7 Dees is still owned and operated by brothers David, Dean, and Drew, who work together with a team of dedicated employees to fulfill a long-standing commitment to quality and service!“

It would be so fun to have a tutorial, maybe from someone at Dennis’s, on how to choose plants for potted arrangements in this kind of setting. (Light needs, anticipated growth over the season, water needs – all of those should be compatible for the various plants in one pot.)

The larger pot from AllModern might be good for a lemon, but cherry trees can be small or really big depending on the variety – it’s important to know what you’ve got before planting in a pot vs. in the ground.

I just tried to buy something from AllModern based on this shoot, but the dimensions weren’t listed. What became clear was an AI chatbot gave me what were very obviously the incorrect dimensions THREE SEPARATE TIMES after I pointed out each time their dimensions were physically impossible. Googled and found another site that had the actual dimensions listed so now I guess I’ll buy from them. I don’t know why retailers are willing to understand that a beautiful, human shoot styled by real and talented people like this amazing post has value, but then turn around and refuse to have human customer service. AI doesn’t belong in this space and I despise it more each day, enough to take my business elsewhere…

After reading this post, I went back through the original interior Carly post. It is so good!! There are so many unique ideas in those pictures, I would LOVE it if Emily and the team could write a post that gives ideas/advice for how to apply some of the unique and interesting design choices to our own homes. I like having something to be inspired by, and to see it done so well on a larger scale, maybe I can recreate it on a smaller scale at home. Examples include some of the little niches, window seats, bathroom choices, mixing different materials on ceilings/walls, stuff like that! Remember your design series when you picked a design “style” and did a deep dive into how the look is achieved (cali casual, I recall), maybe a deep dive into what design elements were used to create this “feeling” or style, even if there’s no specific name for it. Carly style, if you will. Even if you utilize the photos in your previous post, just add lots more insight on the whys and how to translate it to a reader’s home on a smaller scale. Please?!

I was required to remove a 65 year old camellia bush/tree because it was too close to my home which is in a fire zone. What to put in its place? A wide black planter bowl set on a black round pot would work well. Thanks for the inspiration.

Now, regarding we older folks, especially Brian’s Mom and me, we love chairs with arms especially dining chairs. It makes it so much easier to get up especially after that glass of wine. Please consider adding a few of those. And for the younger set how about a fashionable high chair? Universal Design!

Just gorgeous. I love how you really incorporate plants. Makes it next level!
And to second the person about AI in business, I’m so tired of repeating myself to a bot. Let’s let companies know! I had a return at Gap Factory recently and a real human answered the line right away. I’ll buy from them again.
