Rethink the Average Mirror (with a roundup of our new favorites)

Mirrors are often the ‘best friend’ roll in the romantic comedy. They typically aren’t the star, but at times can shine and standout. For designers they are extremely useful because they can make a space feel bigger, and they can make a wall feel addressed without costing as much as art. But the traditional rectangle above the mantel has lately acquired some competition. First it was the ’round’ which has become pervasive (of which we still love) but there are some new hot shots in town that you should consider. Yes, folks this is me telling you to ‘Rethink the Mirror’.

First off mirrors of massive scale either hanging or leaning are an extremely high impact way of addressing a wall and bringing in light, but are still way less than a piece of art.

We are going to get a couple for the office, custom-made.

If going the custom route isn’t your thing then think about different shapes or colors, and major retailers are killing it these days with affordable options.

A non-square, rectangle, oval or circular mirror can make a space feel more modern, edgy and fresh.

A smoked, amber or pink mirror can do a lot more to a room or vignette than the traditional because it has more visual weight and can work with your color palette.

I really love some of these mirrors. For authentic MCM mirrors, check out this fabulous Etsy seller: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/uulipolli I bought a shapely teak mirror (similar to #17) from her shop and it STUNS in my little basement bathroom.

I have the number 7 mirror by anthro and I love it. It hangs over my bed; I live in the south with very little earthquake activity. https://flic.kr/p/dWdm2S

I have been OBSESSED with the mirror in your bedroom and have been looking for something like it for months. The problem is it only ever shows up in your stories and I have to screen shot it…. not a great result?

Would you mind sharing your source, or at least showing an actual picture of it?!

Oh gosh, I wanted to expire when I saw the amber mirror a few photos down. We bought a (dated fixer upper) house last month where every dang thing in it was orange or gold, from the wallpaper to the kitchen to the window tint to the GIANT AMBER MIRROR in the dining room. I’m biased after this orange overload but truly I can’t see the appeal of tinted mirrors. They’re not so useful for appearance checks and they do reflect light back… in the color they are tinted. (Obvs my house did not need more orange reflecting around.)

Emily, I adore you and your work, you are amazing! Consider a proofreader tho, there are almost daily examples of misused words. It takes away from the wonderful content and beautiful photos.

I respectfully disagree, Jean. I love Emily’s word usage as much as anything, it shows she’s human.

You have helped me realize I haven’t been taking full advantage of mirrors! They can be works of art too! I especially love the ones with the build in filters 😉

The deco-inspired mirrors are exciting!
Someone will be murdered in that bathroom, right?
The rock tree…can it go away? I hate it and yet can’t stop staring.
