HOWDY, GANG. Happy (?) Fourth of July. The bad news: we are currently trudging through a seemingly neverending series of unprecedented times. The good(ish) news: many Americans have a three-day weekend right now, which is nice? I’ll be down in Rehoboth Beach with friends and family for the next few days, where I’ll spend ~60% of my time distracting myself with boogie boards and fireworks and snacks, ~30% of my time panicking about the future, and ~10% of my time updating THIS SALES POST RIGHT HERE.
In a pretty shocking plot twist that I can’t really explain, this year’s Fourth of July sales are actually WAY better than normal – like, these are the best deals that we’ve seen so far this year (better deals than Memorial Day! How?!). It doesn’t really make sense to me (does anything?), but it’ll be fun to score a few deeply-discounted essentials. Now more than ever, I’d advise only buying the things you need…but we can all look for free, right? 🙂 Below, I’ve highlighted the sales from your EHD Official Top 10 Most-Shopped Retailers™ (ha), followed by a more comprehensive list of great deals from other brands we know and love. Enjoy your weekend and be sure to check back – I’ll update as deals (and inventory) change. 🙂

All of the stores have too much inventory. They over bought when we were all home and couldn’t predict when a shift would happen. I listened to a good NPR bit about it. https://www.marketplace.org/2022/05/19/retailers-bulked-up-their-inventories-during-the-worst-of-the-pandemic-now-theyre-stuck-with-them/
I’ve been waiting for this!
Me, too! Here’s another Marketplace piece: https://www.marketplace.org/2022/06/07/retailers-have-an-inventory-problem-as-lockdown-lifestyle-fades/
It’s astonishing that the USA associates public celebratory events with mass consumerism.
I know it’s a ‘thing’.
It simply astonishes me.
😶
Sadly, Rusty, us Americans have been conditioned since the end of WWII to need and want more. There’s an old animated movie called “The Story of Stuff” that explains the coordinated effort to teach Americans that it’s patriotic to buy, buy, buy. It’s a fascinating take. We have a lot to learn from our neighbors around the world!
(and I will admit to being excited at seeing the list of sales on today’s post)
“The Story of Stuff” is great!
Also, whether we like it our not, the U.S. economy is largely built on consumer spending. I wonder if this true for all large economies or just the U.S.
Capitalism is prevalent everywhere. 🤑🤑🤑
There’s (not yet) another financial model.
I guess it’s about whether we are absorbed into the marketing quicksand, or stand back and observe the feeding frenzy of more, more, more??
It’s actually kind of stressful (being in the USA and having every holiday be a massive sales event). For me it makes it more difficult to simply get what I need when I need it, and encourages panic buying (“only 3 days!”). If someone is an organized planner with a curated wish list and can wait till the items go on sale, it’s probably worth it. But just browsing all the sites and seeing all the stuff on sale is too much.
Yep.
I have a slightly different take. I hate the sales model. I’d much prefer if things were priced right from the beginning, and never went on sale. And if something went on sale it remained there until it’s gone. The sales model is like a trick. I rarely buy stuff unless it’s on sale because I know the true price is meant to be 20-40% lower. But it doesn’t cause me to buy more
Same here, yet the marketing tricks the masses into supposed urgency by using words like “…you need… must-have…” and all the other keeping-up-with Jones and Kardashian BS surface-dwelling.
Thank you for the update through this blog
I commend you for your excellent skill of writing
Did you have Grotto’s yet?
Highly recommend you go out to Hopkins Dairy for the very best ice cream. If you go to the farm they will have all of the flavors. My favorite local band will be playing at the bandstand Sunday before and after the fireworks.
Unfortunately I don’t have the patience to find a parking spot
during a holiday weekend. Have a great time.

“At the beginning of the year, stores have been waiting for purchaser buying to bounce back, but the Omicron variation delayed a lot of the recuperation that retailers had been hoping for,” says Kristen Gall, buying and retail expert for Rakuten, to Yahoo Life.
