18 Fun and Affordable Pillow Combos

Photo by Tessa Neustadt for EHD

Ask anyone that doesn’t know the first thing about the job of an interior designer and they might say, they “fluff pillows” and “pick out fabrics”. And while they aren’t entirely wrong there is a lot more that goes into pulling together a room than just those two things, but the fluffing pillows part can be pretty tricky at times. Selecting the right pillows is more than just grabbing a few that look good together and calling it a day. You have to consider scale, style, pattern, texture, and size just to name a few. We have pulled together quite a few pillow combo roundups before on the blog (including our first one which walks you through our tried and tested rules for pillow styling), but we haven’t ever done it on a budget.

And, while we love a beautiful $300 throw pillow, we also realize that might not be practical for everyone’s budget or sofa. So today we got budget friendly with this roundup and pulled together 18 guaranteed to look good pillow combos that all come in at under $100 for the entire combo (although some will need inserts – which you can use from your old pillows if they are the right size, or buy them online). Whether you are neutral, boho, eclectic, traditional or anything in between there is a pillow combo below that can work for you. Happy “fluffing” everyone.

I just counted: I own eight of the same exact pillows on this list! Ha! CB2 is one of my favorites. The quality is super high and they come with the inserts!

Etsy is my favorite place to find pillows. Sometimes I browse for new pillows for no good reason!

Hi Emily,

Love this post! Any idea where the barn prints are from in the first picture?

Thanks!

This blog has been killing it lately! Between the one-room-three-ways posts, the affordable sectionals one, the projector one, and now pillows… I love what this blog has been up to recently. I find it inspiring, but more than that, I find it really, really useful. Cannot praise the last couple of week’s posts enough.

The only series that I miss, if you can call it that since I don’t think there was more than maybe one post before it got discontinued, was the our-fav-rooms-from-the-past one, simply because the links in a lot of the older posts don’t work anymore because the stores no longer sell the items, and some rooms from the past were quite lovely – it’d be nice to have “new” rooms that are basically the old rooms but with links to still-available items, maybe with a slight tweak / evolution if it fits (e.g. the palm-wallpapered living room and pink accent-walled dining room, the wheelchair-friendly senior’s apartment, the old house’s mid-Cen modern living room (loved all of the iterations), the Hurricane Sandy remodel…).

Oh I’d love this too!! In some of your other posts you’ve used old rooms an example photos and I’ve found others things in those rooms I want.

I always agree with JessVII’s comments.

(I sense a theme here – we like the affordable, attainable stuff. 😉 )

The blog has been spectacular lately!

I too have been waiting for a post like this. Pillows seem simple but they perplex me, from exorbitant prices to combinations, I’ve always been stumped. #1 is my favorite and immediately grabbed me followed by #4, #5 and #8 in no particular order.

Thank you, this is very very helpful. It would be great if there is a post for pillows- throw combination as well.

I love number 11 the most – it seems perfect for me. For other people’s houses, I like numbers 7, 12, 15, and 18.

Nice! I like quite a few of these combos.

I prefer feather/down inserts, and I’ve found Crate and Barrel (probably CB2, as well) have the best insert bang for the buck. You can buy cheaper, but you’ll get accompanying lower quality. I’ve seen inserts of the Crate and Barrel quality at twice their price.

P.S. In addition to the variables you mention, I always like to try for comfort, too. If a pillow is not comfortable to sit against or pokes you in awkward ways, it’ll just end up getting tossed on the floor…and eventually to the Salvation Army.

THANK YOU!!! I love the pillow roundups but I couldn’t ever justify $100+ for ONE pillow. Keep these up!

Hi Emily: I’m a day late and a dollar short!! I have been searching everywhere for new throw pillows for our family room. Most all of the places that you recommended I have looked but couldn’t find what I was looking for. I finally settled on pillows from Amazon and waiting for them to be delivered. I just hope they are pretty as their pictures and will hold up. Thank you for sharing this post.

Love so many of these! Really wish Target pillows came with zippers so that the covers could get washed. That’s a deal breaker for me with pets.

It would be nice to have all pillows in one group from same source to keep shipping costs down…
Some great combos here!

What a fun post, Em! You gave me some new and different ideas about combining different pillow colors, shapes and textures. Best of all, pillows I can AFFORD! I get excited with every post I receive, I KNOW I will learn something new, fun or just be whimsically entertained!
Oh! As soon as I saw pillow grouping #14, I had to HAVE it! Thx!

LOVE this post!
I just began my pillow safari for Spring pillows yesterday & the timing is perfect! The pillow dilemmas can be REAL! I’ve been referring many new friends to your site lately, b/c we’ve re located to the East Coast, but I’m a West Coast girl @ heart. They all want to know why my home has such a relaxed & natural, coastal”vibe”!
Thank you!
