The Link Up: The $20 Sweatpants Ryann Swears By, Mallory’s Summer Shoe, and The Design Book We All Just Ordered

Hi everyone and happy Sunday! Welcome back to another link up where we tell you about all the great (and sometimes not so great) things we’ve seen/bought/love that we want and NEED to tell you, our readers, about. Forget about all you got going on for a few minutes, sit back, relax and dive right in :)

This week’s home tour is a really REALLY fun one via domino. Look at all the colors!! Emily Wassall and her family moved to Los Angeles and were inspired by the “warm weather aesthetic” as she calls it. They took the whole house to the studs, flopped the layout and made it so colorful and unique. Guys could you imagine growing up here??? Your kids probably have a 90% chance of being EVEN COOLER because this is what they lived and grew up in. How fun, right??

From Emily: My friend, Justina just came out with her THIRD BOOK. Reading through it I felt so proud, inspired and impressed. She is such a powerhouse and creative genius. This book is more personal, with a lot of anecdotes about her childhood and creative process. It’s also GORGEOUS (a lot of photos by Dabito) and would be a lovely gift.

From Ryann: I am not sure why it has taken me so long to recommend these sweats to y’all but maybe that’s a good thing. I have had them for about 4 months and basically wear them every night and LOVE THEM so I can confirm they are great. I love that they don’t have a drawstring so you don’t have to deal with that thing where the string gets all wonky and they hold their integrity surprisingly well. Sweats that I wear usually stretch out so fast that I have to wash them after a couple wears but not these. They are my favorite sweats and look very cute too so you can wear them to the grocery store if you are so inclined. I am actually about to purchase another pair right now. See ya there!

From Jess: If you’ve read any of my blabbering about skincare you know I am a HUGE Shani Darden fan. I use three of her products pretty religiously (cleansereye cream, and retinol) but a month or so ago, after saving up, I finally purchased her facial sculpting wand (she’s a very big proponent of vibration therapy). I truly love it so much. Not only do I just feel more toned after I use it, it’s also a relaxing massage for my face and neck. I like that I’m forced to slow down a little and enjoy the process. And yes, it’s not at all cheap but I’m really extremely happy with my investment.

Also From Jess: I know I am not alone in the deep org dive that happened in 2020 (or 2021 when some of us maybe had some more energy). So during my effort to organize, I went through all of my realllly old documents that I don’t need or WANT taking up space but have personal info I’d like to keep personal. I was desperate for a paper shredder. You know, the sexiest of the everyday office machinery. So actually Em doesn’t know this but I kinda borrowed the one we used to have when I went to the garage once since it was just sitting there. Em when you read this, know I PROMISE I will give it back. Anyway, this little cutie works great and will likely be my hot date this Saturday night. I know, my life is overwhelmingly exciting. I won’t brag again next week, I promise.

From Mallory: I went down a shoe-buying rabbit hole that was 100% fueled by stress and wine, but boy did I get some good finds. I bought these shoes that I’ll gladly be living in all summer (plus they’re not very tall so I can comfortably walk around which is ALWAYS a nice to have. Then for a less walkable but still very cute shoe I went with these that I had been eyeing (and I wore them all Easter) and even though they’re tall the platform is so big that the heel itself is totally comfortable to stand in for hours at a time. I guess my love for wicker furniture has now landed on my feet, literally. I’ll be wearing them to brunch all spring/summer. And then lastly I bought these because I’m in need of a good, comfy, black summer sandal but when I put them on I realized they look a lil too harsh on my large foot, so now I’m still in the market for a solid, flat black everyday sandal (which is the whole reason I went shoe shopping in the first place!!!) I always end up with statement shoes and not enough shoes that go with everything *PALM IN FACE* please give me your black or neutral summer sandal recs if you would like!!

Thanks for joining us on this fine Sunday…now go enjoy the rest of your day!! LOTS O’ LOVE!

If you’re looking for an everyday, walk everywhere sandal loom no further than Noat! I have a tan suede sandal from a couple of years ago and it is amazing. Fair warning: some styles are granny looking, but they also have lots of cute options. ?

LOL, the curse of us aint-in-our-20s(maybe-30s-either)-anymore women who want to look good but comfort HAS to be a factor. Sigh, we DO have to work around the granny options!

I have these Miz Mooz sandals and I love them, so comfortable from the first day; they’ll held up two summers for me so far:

I happen to think all 3 pairs of shoes are kinda fugly but I’m especially annoyed bc just the other day Emily went on and on about not buying clothes just to have more stuff but only buying what you actually need and here we are today talking about a need for black sandals but instead buying 3 others pairs of shoes on impulse.

And who is brunching?! Order takeout and stay home to eat for goodness sakes. The pandemic is not over!

I didn’t tead too carefully, but I think it was a different team member buying shoes. Shoes do wear out. Because this team is big, I think that sometines information will appear contradictory because everyobe might have different preferences. I do find that Emily’s blog is actually very consistent in all advise, styling rules, opinions. I really like that. I remember Oprah’s talkshow and I think Mydomaine’s website (I dont know if it still exists) presented contradictory all the time, and articles were reposted all the time without a note. Those too were super annoying. So every expert or contributor would say somethink that was contradictory to the previews. Something along the lines of “paint small interiors white to make them seem bigger”, “dont be afraid of dark paint in small interiors, they actually appear bigger because light doesn’t bounce back off the wall”

I’ve been to brunch. I’ve gone out to dinner, too. I’ve seen family. I’ve gone shopping. It’s called living. And I’m doing it all within the rules and parameters of pandemic life. Sorry not sorry, as they say. Mallory is allowed an evening of wine-fueled shoe shopping.
You sound like you need to get out of the house, fast. You’ve turned into a very unpleasant person.

It’s just a troll dropping a load then peeling off. I doubt they will even be back to read the responses.

The global statistics prove that staying home actually works; wearing face masks when you actually n-e-e-d to go somewhere works.

Countries that have done the hard things in the beginning of the pandemic, are now living relatively ‘normal’ lives and have not gad the suffering and death toll, e.g. New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, etc.

If anyone hasn’t read Orlando’s guest blog here on EHD … be sure to go read it now. It’s full of great, solid advice about the realities of being responsible during a pandemic.

It’s bullying to slam someone for having a strong opinion.
Jess’s HOLLABACK site recommendation last week, is about calling out bullying (racism, sexism, et al) when you see it, so that’s what I’ve done here.
Let’s stop the ganging up, please.

Police other people’s behavior is a form of bullying too. Passive-aggressive, preachy, smug comments are bullying, too. Police your own behavior.

And stop ganging up on folks who aren’t living exactly the way you choose to live.

Given that different cities and states have very different levels of Covid now, it’s ridiculous to assume that everyone everywhere should stay home 24/7, especially once vaccinated. My governor (in a Democrat-leaning state) has lifted all sorts of pandemic rules for the past month and our covid case load remains low and stable. We’re learning to live with this in a responsible way. But if you want to stay home for the next 18 months until every shred of covid is gone, be my guest.

P.S. Covid will never be completely eliminated.

We are also staying home, and have been since March 2020. I am fully vaccinated and my husband has had his first dose (we are older). We live in San Diego, CA and people around here do not follow rules, nor do they wear masks! This morning on his walk, my husband passed about 20 people and not one single person was wearing a mask. He kept having to cross the street to avoid them. It’s a problem, especially since we live in a “vacation destination” area – lots and lots of tourists everywhere.

Yes, Elise. People can be indular and thoughless in their actions.
Emily has reinforced that her team are/shouldbe, doingthe right thing.

It’s concerning that some people may be under the illusion that a vaccine equates to being immune to Covid. It foes not.
Onecan still be infected snd pass it on to others.

The vaccine only, (hopefully) protects to a degree, the seriousness of the infection, should one get it.

Then, we’ll all need boosters to deal with the mutation variants as they sweep through.

The advice is to follow the science.
I wish people would.

I think I’d face-plant fall-down off those shoes Emily Wassall’s wearing in the first pic of the home tour. Super colourful home with happy vibes… love the turquoise!

Justina’s book looks fabulous! I actually found EHD via her site yearrrrs ago!
A touch of boho is so homely to me.❤ BTW: Justina’s business is committed to planting trees via every sale they make!! Whoo hoo!!! ? Yaaay!

JESS! That HOLLABACK site you recommended last week is fab-u-lous!!
I forwarded it to several people, including two young women I mentor and their feedback is great too. Thank you again.
Psst: you can recycle your shreddings or compost them, or even feed it to a worm farm!

I just now noticed (from seeing a few red numbers) that we can down-vote comments now. (and can change our minds to up-vote the same, if we goof like I just did.)

Thanks for calling my attention to Justina Blakeney’s book. I spent more time than I’d planned on the Jungalow site, where everything I wanted was sold out, but now that I know about her collaborations I’ll be keeping my eyes open for them. Large-scale prints on large-scale objects aren’t for me, but it would be fun to have a new Native deodorant or box of Band-Aids or even Keds with some wildness in the design.

Mallory, I am 5’1″, small framed, and wear a size 9 1/2 shoe! I feel your pain. Since I am long past high school I no longer have to hear the bully boys call me Skis, so I wear whatever shoe I want. Embrace those cute shoes! :)

My everyday walkable sandal is the Ugg Kamile. I have the tan/white but they come in black and white and probably some other colors as well. They’re super comfortable, and I can walk anywhere in them! Love them and they’ve held up great over the past couple of years (wearing in summer).

Could always get rainbows. They were really big in SoCal in 2000s. I still wear my black ones in the yard.

I can’t say enough to praise Mephisto sandals, specifically the Helen model. As a Californian, I wear them a good nine months of the year. Try the Fog colorway, a gorgeous iridescent pastel splash pattern.

I wouldn’t wear them on a hike or for tennis, but otherwise I put them on in the morning and take them off at night.
