After a big ole weekend of sales and shopping, we thought it would be a fun and a good break to look at some beautiful design inspo by way of new design trends we think are bubbling up. Hey, it’s one of our favorite pastimes to collect design data to see what we think will be big (or just a cool medium:)). Some of these are more established, while some are educated hunches to look out for. Regardless, we love them all, and if you love them too, they have the EHD stamp of approval:) Let’s get into the first one.
While mixing patterns on the same sofa, chair, bench, etc, isn’t new, it’s definitely taken on a new life. I feel like I’ve seen them pop up in almost every new house tour, and I love all of them. This is typically (if not almost always) a custom job, but hopefully, as it becomes more popular, major retailers will take the hint and give us some affordable options! But if you are a bit of a seamstress, a custom banquette cushion and back rest could be in your wheelhouse, like this one above. I love the unexpected pairing of fabric patterns, but also how both of them are darker and a little moody.
Please scroll to the 4th slide of this carousel to see this incredible sofa! When you think of fabric mixing, patterns are the first thing that comes to mind (at least for me). But this colorblocked sectional is quite the case for solids only. I hope to have a sofa like this in my future home someday. IT’S SO GOOD!
Again, please scroll to the 4th slide. Here you see a mix of solid and patterned fabrics. This is a great (and safe) way to mix fabrics without the panic of trying to pair two different patterns. It looks just as awesome.
Slide 4 really seems to be the magic slide of sofa fabric mixing, huh?? Well, here’s another great example of mixing a pattern with a solid, except this time, the base is the solid color, and the seat has the pattern. You really can’t go wrong. But if you do want to mix multiple patterns, as a rule of thumb, vary the pattern scales and stay within your decided color palette.
I feel like this was a trend years ago, and here it is, seemingly coming back again…but chicer. I mean, if Heidi Caillier is doing it, it’s happening, and when done right looks beautiful. I love that she took the blue color of the solid cabinets and incorporated it into the pattern of the other cabinet set. It really adds a fun playfulness to the room! I do think the darker wood frame also helps to elevate it (you know, aside from all the other beautiful pieces in the space:)). If the frame were, say, white, I don’t think it would look as expensive.
Here’s another great example that’s a bit more on the traditional side. The wallpaper seems like it makes the room feel more open than having walls of solid wood (which is also beautiful but clearly a different vibe). Meta Coleman is another designer who is INCREDIBLE with color, pattern, and whimsy, so if you ever need inspo, she should be on the list.
Oh, indoor tablecloths are here, people. Maybe some of you never strayed, but most of the design world did until now. Also, as shown above, it’s not just for traditional-style homes. Any style, with the right pattern or color, can do a tablecloth. I love how you can instantly add color or pattern to your interiors, with little to no effort. Now, all of the examples here and from what I’ve seen, it’s round tables that are getting all dressed up. That doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t use one on your square or rectangular tables.
This home is more traditional, but look at the scale of the pattern they used on the tablecloth to contrast the pattern on the walls. The walls are large-scale, while the tablecloth is more of a medium scale, which visually works so beautifully together.
Look how playful and fresh this one is! I love the ruffle and the color it adds to this otherwise very beautiful, but very neutral space.
If you are worried about legs getting all caught up in the fabric, you can opt for a short tablecloth like this one.
Looking for a more layered but still very traditional look? Double up! If you scroll to the second slide, you’ll see the sweetest little bistro table with a dark blue main tablecloth and a smaller white topper. Maybe this is a good secret way to hide stains on the main fabric when the table isn’t in use?? 🙂
Here we have Heidi again, but this time with the double tablecloth. See how she used two patterns and how the pattern scales are different?? I will NEVER stop talking about how important it is to do that.
I’ve been on THE HUNT for a wedding guest dress, so I’ve been on maybe every fashion site that exists on the whole of the internet. And is there’s one thing that is for certain is that fringe is ON TREND. I mean, why not? It’s so fun and effervescent. Em taught me a long time ago that looking at fashion first will help to see what’s coming down the line for interiors. So this is your warning. Fringe is coming in a bigger way than usual, and we are very happy about it. Don’t you want that sofa too??
Or this one that I have dreams about?
But maybe furniture feels like too big a commitment, and going big on your rug’s fringe is better for you?
However, a fringed lamp shade will always be cool, and there are so many more options right now.
I really wish colorful bathroom fixtures like tubs, sinks, and toilets had never gone out of fashion. We all love a vintage, colorful bathroom, right? But I get that bold color isn’t for everyone, but take a look at this butter yellow pedestal sink. It’s subtle but unique and looks incredible. Even Emily wants to put in some colorful vintage pieces in the guest cottage!
You gotta scroll to the last slide, but this is another modern bathroom with a light sage green vintage toilet, and it’s perfect. It softens the modernness so beautifully and adds a ton of character!
The same goes for this awesome butter-yellow toilet. I can’t get enough. A white toilet would have been fine, but this one makes the whole room really sing and feel special.
Don’t even get me started on this yellow tub. This bathroom is modern and whimsical, and I want it!
I will also HAPPILY take this pale blue one. I assume colorful fixtures are more expensive, but if you have the budget, I think it’s such a cool and special choice.
Hope this eye candy was filling and fun:) Have you been seeing any other micro new design trends?? See you tomorrow with another awesome Arlyn post!
