Well, we just had A BLAST at The Meridian Experience Weekend that the incredible Albie single-handedly organized. It was a HUGE undertaking and to no one’s surprise, she nailed it. We couldn’t have been more grateful to be a part of it and meet so many truly inspiring new friends. If you were curious about it/wanted to go, we highly recommend going next year. We hope that y’all also had a good week and are now ready for some links…and pics:)
This week’s home tour is designed by the incredible Heidi Caillier. In this single photo, you can see four spaces and while they are all so different, they perfectly talk to each other with the use of similar colors, woods, and shapes. It’s just an awesome and inspiring home that we highly highly recommend you take a peek at:)
From Emily: I have three summer/beach, easy, can’t put down novels that make you feel warm and happy (should you feel like reading about love and romance). I recently fell in love with Christina Lauren which FUN FACT is actually two people – friends, one’s name is Christina and you guessed it, the other is Lauren. These books have really good banter and wit – not LOL but just people who I like to think I’d be friends with. I wonder if having two friends writing together helped it read better and dare I say even deeper. Not that it goes super literary, but it’s just efficient and yet thoughtful in the right ways. They are rom-com style books, not overly erotic but no creepy dead child mystery which I find is the best for my anxiety (I don’t have anxiety typically but a lot of those “girl in the window across from the lake” style thrillers would make me feel unsettled before bed so I just don’t go there anymore). I think that this duo writes books that I can jump into within the first page, and get lost in. I started with The Soulmate Equation (Kindle and Local), then Love and Other Words (Kindle and Local), and just started Something Wilder (Kindle and Local) this week. Don’t worry – I mixed in Malibu Rising (Kindle and Local) in the middle (which I LOVED), Book Lovers (Kindle and Local), and am starting Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (Kindle and Local) after this one. There is no shame in my summer kindle novel game
From Caitlin: OH BABY. This week I met up with a friend who looked SO chic and relaxed and pulled-together – like a character in a Nora Ephron movie – and I lost my mind over her gauzy textured pants, which were SO soft and lightweight and flattering. I thought they’d be pretty expensive (they looked luxe, despite the tie-waist) and I was THRILLED when I learned that they were under $100 and that they come in 5 different colors, 3 different lengths, and in sizes XX-small to XX-large. They’re breezy and perfect for summer but they don’t necessarily wrinkle in the same way that linen does, which makes them even better in my book. I ordered a pair in black buuuuut I have my eyes on the sage, too (fingers crossed they go on sale soon!).
From Mallory: My sister eloped in Vegas last weekend (IT WAS SO MUCH FUN) but I realized I didn’t have a good clutch that would hold my phone, lipstick & credit cards…I realized I was running out of time to grab one in-store, but thank god this $11 purse showed up in the nick of time. If you’re going to a fancy event and thought about your purse way too last minute (and you don’t wanna spend a lot of money because you already bought a new dress/outfit…) then this one is for you (I got it in apricot but it comes in like 10 different colors too). If you want deets on my dress and shoes I also go them VERY last minute from Amazon (honestly this whole look was “primed”). The dress was $50 and I got it hemmed for the vegas look. It did in fact shed A LOT and the feathers will get stuck in your armpits if it’s hot but I don’t think I could have found a better dress for a Vegas elopement. Then the shoes I really would recommend…super affordable and great for summer! They got me through the wedding to the reception and to the vegas clubs and a late-night taco bell cantina. All in all a very successful outfit for a very fun time:)
From Ryann: I cannot stop making this sandwich that has been all over my Tik Tok feed. It’s called the Grinder salad sandwich and is a) easy to make b) delicious and c) tricks my fiancé into thinking I am a good cook. I’ve had versions of this type of sandwich many times at sandwich shops but when I realized I can make it so easily at home and it actually tastes restaurant quality, my mind was a little blown. You can really use any kind of cheese and cured Italian meat but I’ve been doing turkey, salami, and spicy salami but the real star is the salad dressing that’s just mayo, red wine vinegar, garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper. You mix that all together with iceberg lettuce, red onions, and banana peppers and layer it on your sandwich and wow… it’s unreal. I think you can easily make it for a bunch of people and would be perfect for a pool party or beach day. I don’t know what else to say other than try it and thank me later!!
From Jess: Speaking of weddings, a huge and exciting shift on the wedding guest dress plan! This past weekend was a big step in my adulthood (she says very begrudgingly) because I was forced to get a storage unit. More on that in a minute. One very exciting outcome was finding one of my mom’s old dresses that’s perfect for my friend’s wedding (shown above)! So since my dress was now going to cost $0, I decided to get a very dreamy pair of shoes. I really wanted a camel-colored shoe and ideally one with a cool shape. Enter these puppies. I love the weird heel (that won’t sink into grass), the square toe, the delicate straps, and the cool chain strap detail…so all of it. FYI I really wanted an ankle strap because I am a dancing queen at weddings and a mule wasn’t going to cut it. I know you won’t see most of it since the dress is long but these are FUN going out shoes that can work with a ton of different outfits. Also, I love the brand’s (Alohas) sustainability mission. If you don’t know about them I highly suggest you check them out! Em’s blue cowboy booties are from them too:)
Also From Jess: So yes, I now have a small storage unit because my dad is downsizing his company’s warehouse where all of our family stuff has been for years. Honestly I’m lucky to have had access to it for as long as I did. But without a home large enough to hold the things I still want (ie family heirlooms, photos that I plan on digitizing this year but still will keep, American girl dolls, etc.) I needed to get over the idea of paying for storage for an unknowable amount of time. Cool cool cool. Now, I NEED ADVICE! Any tips on the best way to store clothes? Vacuum Sealed bags? Any other general long-term storage tips? I want to do this right and preserve everything as best I can.
That’s it for this week. Hope the rest of your day is great and see y’all tomorrow. xx

Love the roundup, LOVE the housetour and the DRESSS (how lovely to be able to wear your mums dress to a special event!) Sadly I have no storage advide, but if any of the other EHD readers sew and love the pants Caitlin linked, they look to me very very similar to the Arden Pants by Helens Closet which is a sewing pattern made specifically for joggers out of a non-stretch fabric i.e. muslin/double gauze (just add a straight seam on the front leg if you want a more exact copy and leave off the bottom elastic) – that way you could definitely make these for less than 120 Dollars and Helens Closet has EXCELLENT instructions, making these a relatively easy sew, just in case anyone would like a little summer project ;)
This is the pattern if anyone wants it
You’re a gem!
Thanks for that sewing reminder, Lisa! Any tips on where to shop for natural fabrics (cotton, linen, etc) in a nice weight for pants? Local fabric shops in my area have dwindled away and I’m down to Jo-Ann and they don’t have much.
Store Located in Berkeley, CA but great online shopping too!
Oops!
Stonemountain & Daughter:
Aaaw I’m so happy folks appreciated the sewing advice ? I just saw the pants and couldn’t unsee the pattern I’d use to make them :D Where to shop for fabric (even online) obviously depends on where you live, for me that’s in Germany, so I’m afraid I don’t have good personal tips for folks in the US or elswhere, but another great pattern designer (who also runs a great sounding fabric store!) recently did a fabulous roundup of independent online fabric stores all over the world – you can find that here: I’m sure they’ll have somewhere convenient for you! :)
Check out Oak Fabrics online, a shop specializing in beautiful fabrics and patterns for garment sewing. Rachel’s product descriptions are really helpful and tell you how the fabrics behave and what garments they’re suited for. She’ll send swatches and field questions. She’s an expert!
I got the same shoes as Mallory last week. 1. I’ve never felt cooler than now, because Mallory has great style! 2. I can confirm, they are indeed comfortable.
Jess – photograph every single thing if you can, and document it. Our storage unit was broken into last year, and even with extra insurance options, you have to prove the value of every item to get any kind of payout. I wish I had known that!
This advice is gold! Someone I know did the photos and many things were missing when she emptied the storage unit 3 years later!! Insurance covered it, because she had itemised lists with photos.?
Emily- I think you’d really love the book Wildcat by Amelia Morris! It’s a super fast and enjoyable read that takes place in LA. It was a People magazine book of the week in March. It’s about female friendships, motherhood, and social media. I cackled out loud at several parts. Here’s a review of it from Kirkus
I started reading Christina Lauren sometime last summer and LOVE THEM. I also just finished my first Emily Henry book, People We Meet on Vacation and adored that as well. Beach Read and Book Lovers are in my to read stack. Just added Malibu Rising to my library holds-Thanks for the suggestions!
I would really really think hard about how much you actually need and want to keep in storage for “some day”. Even some family heirlooms. You will thank yourself later for not paying a monthly fee for stuff that may not actually be worth it. It takes hard emotional work to go through our stuff and let it go vs just moving it from one place to another but it’s worth it. Think Swedish Death Clean. Why store clothes you aren’t wearing? I have a baptismal gown, a wedding gown and a few dresses I can’t wear but have emotional value but they all fit in my current closet where I can see and enjoy them daily. You may find when you finally have a space to ditch the storage unit, most of what you stored won’t work in the new space anyway. Worth it to do the hard work now of letting go vs later when it can often be overwhelming. (Maybe I’ve watched too many episodes of hoarders and maybe I’ve seen too many storage units of treasure that has to be sold off)
I’m against hoarding…. I mean storage units per se. If you can’t use it, wear it, enjoy it now; the likelihood of doing it later is remote. It’s like putting the rmotions into thexstorage unit, rather than actual objects, because it’s the emotional attachment and memories more than the things. I totally understand wanting/needing to keep and hold the heirlooms, as my dad died when I was 15 and my mum when I was 27. However, now that years have passed, I’m glad I did a version of Marie Kondo, before it was a thing, all those years ago… when I lived in a small place. My feelings are much the same now about those objects that I thanked and let go of, even thpugh there were a l.o.t. of tears at the time. I’ve passed some things on to nieces and nephews as a “Living Will” and still enjoy the rest around me every day. I use most of them. Others I look at and enjoy that way – too scaredto break them or wear them out (Ah, yes… know thyself, Rusty!). I’m freer for not having gone down the storage unit pathway. It’s remarkably odd that we westerners… Read more »
This post and your comment reminded me of an instagram from Jessica Helgerson, not trying to shame anyone but it was thought-provoking and I thought I would share with you here: jhinteriordesign Verified“A pretty floor, and an unrelated thought. . I drove by a super fancy new U-Store building in Portland yesterday, surrounded by a dozen or more tents. As I pulled over and waited for the light to change, I found myself looking at an elderly man sleeping on the sidewalk in front of the building, with the softest sweetest most gentle face. If it was just him, I’m sure anyone passing would have stopped to see if he was ok, but the need is so great and bottomless it feels unfixable. And so no one stops. I didn’t either. ? . I would wager that nearly all of us, if we separate ourselves from our political views and all the odd misguided rhetoric clogging our brains, would agree that we’ve taken a wrong turn. When we’re beautifully and carefully sheltering our extra furniture and whatever else we don’t love enough to even keep at home, while our fellow humans are living under tarps, our values as a nation… Read more »
Oh, Erin, that’s so moving.
Yes. I agree.
What you wrote and shared is poignant.?
I think it is really dependent on each individual when that kind of purging can happen.
Right now Jess is losing the space where her family things (her late mom’s things) have been stored and she may not be ready to make permanent decisions about what items to keep and what item to let go of. Renting storage space allows her the time at some point in the future to make those kinds of decisions when she is ready.
Jess, your mom’s red dress looks great on you. and how wonderful that you have it to wear!
Found this amazing historic Gloucester home through this magazine article: Find the museum site for it here: and a wild 3D tour of it here:
Beautiful “Victorian terrace” home here:
WOW!!!?Thank you Kj!
I’ll share right back atcha: “Designing Sustainably for the Home” ?
Jess, Mallory, you guys both looks so fab! Red is your color and those dresses are beautiful on you. Also, Evelyn Hugo – I swear this blog (Emily, I thought?) recommended it, because I read it last summer. Definitely a page-turner. I’m also a huge fan of Christina Lauren; another good author along the same vein is Ali Hazelwood (The Love Hypothesis).
Here’s a “write-up” about that Heidi Caillier home, if anyone wants to read more about it:
Jess! Take a photo of EVERYTHING you put in the unit. It rarely happens but things can get damaged and if you ever need to make a claim (or are just wondering if you actually kept that one thing) you will be SO happy you have the evidence!
Loved Heidi’s home tour!! I wish AD, designers, home owners and photographers would share more of the outdoor spaces, I bet this home’s exterior and PNW greenery are so beautiful as well. Love your (Mom’s!!) dress, so cute that you can shop your ma’s closet! Super curious about the bra situation there, esp with the wedding dancing. My girls would be all over the place-is this one of those boob tape situations???
CT born and raised here- the sandwich itself is called a grinder (not a grinder sandwich!)
I can’t get behind the mauve/maroon tile combo at all. Mauve with mint = OK, or maroon with a seal gray/taupe, but this combo needs a very light hand and maybe some pops of jade and ochre, but otherwise, it’s a nope for me.
I too have a storage unit full of family stuff I share with my brother. My dad inherited his uncle and aunts, his brothers, and his parents stuff after they all passed away and never really went through any of it because we had a huge shop that could store it all. Then my dad suddenly passed away (and was single) so my 18 year old brother and my 21 year old self were stuck with so many dead peoples stuff. We have done many sweeps as I call it going through the stuff many times and getting rid of a little more each time but its hard. The best tip I have is to invest in quality, sturdy bins. We tried the cheapest ones but over time they start collapsing or the lids cracking if they are stacked. The best place we have found them is Costco. Label everything and try to be methodical about where you put stuff in the storage unit. It was raining when we first moved everything in ours and it was a mess until I reorganized the whole thing. Oh and for digitizing photos, my husband bought me the Epson Fast Foto scanner and… Read more »
