The Link Up: Emily’s $12 Sunglasses That Look Designer, Mallory’s Favorite Striped T-Shirt, And The Sunscreen That’s Viral On TikTok

This week’s home tour is a gorgeous California cottage designed by Corine Maggio. It’s cozy, coastal, and everything you’d want your dream cottage to be.

From Emily: I wore these sunglasses the other day and my friend asked me who they were made by…she couldn’t believe they were only $12 from target because they look really high quality and have a great shape. I also bought these $15 RayBan dupes while I was there (I’m just now finding out they’re technically “men’s” glasses) but I think they also look awesome. Definitely recommend :)

From Caitlin: Um, excuse me, is this the cutest spring dress I have ever seen??? HOW IS IT ONLY $38? This thing looks like it should be, like, $160 at Madewell. Good for St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, and general warm weather festivities. It’s pretty modest (though there is some flexibility if you wanna show more chest), so it’s probably great for parents who need something comfortable to run around in. (Or, like, even people who just like wearing dresses, I guess? I’m single. I don’t know what parents need)

From Jess: I got this clay-ish colored lip + cheek stick a couple of weeks ago and love it so much! You can put it one light or heavy depending how dramatic you want it and it looks great regardless.

Also From Jess: This is a friendly reminder to buy (if you are out) some sunscreen. I’d been out of mine for two months despite knowing how important it is to wear ALL YEAR. For my face I love Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen and this time got the bigger size.

From Mallory: This t-shirt is my absolute favorite because it fits so well on the shoulders and then drapes really nicely (it’s not too tight at all). It’s also incredibly soft and on sale right now for over $40% off. If you’re in the market, this is my go-to!

From Sara: This sunscreen is my absolute favorite because I put it on last every day, it doesn’t pill with any of my other products, it doesn’t leave any white on your face and it doesn’t feel greasy. It’s also blowing up on the Tiktok (but I was into it before it was popular ;) )

From Ryann: The Target in Eagle Rock just added an Ulta inside and it’s one of the best (or maybe worst?) things that has happened to me. Basically, every time I shop there, which is a lot because it’s right by my house and my gym, I leave with one beauty product. My latest trip ended with me buying multiple products by The Ordinary and I love them all, but this one I am truly obsessed with. I use it day and night and it’s easily my favorite step of my beauty routine. It’s supposed to help with signs of aging, but honestly, it just makes my skin feel really good.

That’s all for today and for ways to continue to support the people of Ukraine head to last week’s post. See y’all tomorrow. xx

The green dress is such a pretty color. I didn’t read the whole description before clicking the link and was like where do people even wear dresses like that? Childless people to brunch maybe? I pictured myself wearing it to the playground and laughed at how unpractical it would be leaning over, ducking down, breezes, mud. Then I went back and read the rest of the description. Definitely would be an odd sight at my suburb’s playgrounds, maybe LA and NYC moms are chic enough to pull it off, haha. I am excited to try the super goop sunscreen though!

Supergoop is amazing! I’ve been wearing it for years, and it doesn’t trigger my very sensitive skin at all.

I have kids too -elementary through high school – and I’m going to go try that dress on during my errands this week. I haven’t bought a new dress since the pandemic started. I’d wear it anywhere I went while the kiddos are in school, or to the park on the weekend bc my kids are old enough that they don’t need or want me to do anything with them so I sit on a bench and read my book, or to lunch/early dinner out, or around the house bc I just want to feel more put together than usual. And I live in a suburb in middle America, nowhere cool. So, I think your take is pretty odd. A mom’s entire life is not chasing an eternal toddler around swings while dodging mud puddles, women who have children are more than that.

DeniseGK- I think your take is the odd one. If you’re past the “dodging mud puddles, pushing your kids on the swing, chasing after a running toddler” part of motherhood then, please, enjoy your book on the park bench. Clearly you’ve forgotten what that season can be like…especially for first-time moms whose life may feel like an eternal game of chase and dress for comfort in the sandbox. Where is the encouragement, in a patronizing response like yours?
It’s unfortunate that your empowering “women who have children are more than that” comment is dripping with condescension towards another.

My comment dealt with the substance of what you wrote, while you respond here to what you think my comment ‘sounded’ like. Haven’t we gotten past the point of thinking implied tone on web comments is something we always get right? I didn’t feel condescending towards you, and I thought you needed a gentle reminder – the kind of reminder that often does encourage people when they remember “oh yeah, what I’m going through now won’t last long”. It didn’t hit you that way, so that’s a miss on my shoulders for not wording it better. But I’m not responsible for your entire perspective on my comment beyond what was written, you have to own what you bring with you when you make assumptions about someone you can’t hear and don’t know. FWIW, I don’t find you condescending in return or anything else truly negative. Maybe it’s been a rough few days with that toddler, they’re good at that. Or maybe you are doing really good at staying calm while objecting to something, my therapist is good at that and I’m starting to notice many others are too. I don’t assume bad of you, can you do the same for… Read more »

DeniseGK- I just wanted to clarify, I didn’t write the original comment nor have I had a rough few days with a toddler…my kids range from elementary to college, so perhaps not too far off from your own. I wasn’t interpreting your tone, or assuming the worst of you, rather responding to the substance of what you wrote, as well.
D tiz’s comment was a lighthearted, honest reaction to Caitlin’s dress description, while also being a relatable reflection of her current season of motherhood. I was surprised -not because your response challenged hers by stating why it would work for you in your suburbs & stage of life- but because you literally placed judgment on her by saying “I think your take is pretty odd.” Why is it odd…just because it is different from your own? And how is that encouraging? I wasn’t making any assumptions about you or your life, I was simply pointing out that one size does not fit all & one person’s opinion doesn’t have to be diminished in order to underscore another.

Are you talking about the green wrap dress from Old Navy? It looks like a very normal dress to me. Could wear to work in the summer, visit friends, go shopping, eat at a restaurant, hang out at a park/picnic or a backyard barbecue. I get what Caitlin is saying about parents – probably not ideal if you are bending over often or playing with kids on the ground – but parents go places other than playgrounds, and not everyone is a parent anyway. I live in a very casual, outdoorsy city and I still see people wearing dresses like that all the time.

Gorgeous home tour! I love all the old stuff!! I coild so just move in there! The contractor has lived there for 70 years?? How.old.is.the.contractor?!??

Just sayin’ … each time I read or hear “aging … or anti-aging”, I wish we could all embrace maturing and all the good stuff that comes with wrinkles n crinkles, like wisdom, insight and awareness. I absolutely, however, am for things like sunscreen (though I’m a bit anti-Goop, et al, like Amazon), and cruelty-free, environmentally friendly products that nake us feel l9vely, good and vibrant.?

I’m on the hunt for some cheapie, decent UV protection sunglasses, so those gave me hope.?

Agree on the anti age lingo… not sure if this is what you were referencing but supergoop is a great sunscreen brand not affiliated with gwyneth Paltrow, but not sure if that’s what you meant by anti-Goop so apologies if I misunderstood!

I thought so when I first heard of Supergoop, then when I researched it I found out it wasn’t. So I tried the sunscreen (bc I also have some feelings about Gwyneth Paltrow/Goop) and it truly is amazing!!!

I love some elements of the new refresh on the house but also love some of the older elements like the copper sink!
I’m super picky about sunscreen being as natural as possible with no nano particles. I prefer hats and Long Beach shirts at the beach and then sunscreen when necessary. Vitamin D from the sun but done as smartly as possible!

I used two of those Nota Bene sticks up completely (which I never manage to do!) right before the pandemic made lip color impractical for a couple years. An all-time favorite product (and this reminds me to order a new one!); my one tip would be to remember that it’s quite soft, so you want to be careful not to wind it up too far.

PSA: Sunscreen expires. There is usually a date printed on it somewhere and it will be at peak performance for about a year from that date. But! You don’t have to throw it away after that, just pay attention to when you need to reapply bc the performance does go down but it doesn’t jump off a cliff. If you read advice articles on the Internet, they will usually tell you it doesn’t work at all & throw it away. But if you buy quality stuff that gets very expensive. The actually research papers that established the effectiveness of sunscreen show that performance is gradual, but so many idependent advice websites are actually in bed with the companies that want you to trash good product and buy more.

Argh: performance *loss* is gradual. When will I learn to check one more time? There’s another typo too, but I’m pretending I don’t care about it.

My eyes will actually try to roll back in my head every time this site posts a Target item, I go to click on it and of course, Target again. I know they partner with them but are there not other affordable finds?
