The EHD team is off for a long holiday break (with fun pre-planned content next week) and I just wanted to pop in real quick to say thank you for another year of support – especially those of you who come daily, and even more to you long time readers. THANK YOU. This next year we’ll be in growth mode over here – with a lot of exciting things happening. Running a digital media business remains to be endlessly challenging – in both the good and bad ways. Turns out “simplifying my life” is harder than it sounds if you want to continue challenging yourself and innovating. And while I remain off the hamster wheel, I’m not ready to retire anytime soon. So I’ve been thinking a LOT about how to move the business forward, on the other side of lockdown, with my team in another state, and without falling into the same self-made traps that I have in the past. I’m so grateful for my team who is always here navigating it with me. And if it goes forward like it is in my head, 2022 is a year of really purposeful, educational, and inspirational content from myself, my team, and all of our awesome contributors (and hoping for more). I wrote a super long-winded self-indulgent post that I might publish on Jan 1 for those of you interested :) Let’s just say I found a new inspiration, a muse, an “expander”, that I’m channeling for the blog.
But more on that later… Isn’t mid-life so fun? Where you just think about large life stuff, purpose, how to find and create meaning ALL THE TIME? I actually do enjoy it and the changes we’ve made have brought more intention and purpose to our day-to-day, but at times I wish I could just go through the motions of life and blogging without so much self-reflection and analysis. That shouldn’t scare you that we won’t have more hair posts in 2022 because I already have a “how to make my curly hair look ‘cool'” post with a tutorial planned, alongside the most common electrical mistakes to avoid. :)
Like most of you, I’m excited to unplug a bit, play Yahtzee with my kids, try out a new breakfast casserole for Christmas morning, and plow through the holiday movies and some novels. I’m soaking up every single second of being in this house as I’ve missed it so much (especially the bathtub – we don’t have one in our rental house and I had NO idea the level of “bath person” I was).
So thank you all again SO MUCH. I can’t wait to start another exciting year with you all. Until then enjoy the rest of this crazy year, maybe take a bath if possible, and stay safe. xx

Beannachtai na Feile Nollaig (Happy Christmas) to you all from Ireland (not all of Ireland, just me in Ireland), and thank you for all the wonderful content during 2021. Looking forward to what you come up with in 2022!
Love that you wrote your Christmas wish in Gaelic! :)
Anyone else tired of people saying ‘stay safe’.
I prefer, gobble up life as you choose and enjoy it to its fullest. Sometimes the biggest risks come with the greatest rewards, other times they come with the worst of all failures.
Staying safe is being trapped in a world where we assess life disproportionately and miscalculate things just to exist and not to really live.
‘It is better to render beings in your care competent than to protect them’.
Nope, I’m not. I have a chronic illness that can leave me bed bound when it flares up, and catching any virus that’s doing the rounds (let alone Covid-19 which left me on steroids, with breathing issues for almost 6months) can devastate my ability to live a full life. So I’d rather be safe *and* live life to the fullest…one does not negate the other.
Same. My husband has a chronic illness so I’m super careful about everything.
I like “stay safe” because I interpret that as making safe choices in the short-term like drive carefully in snow, don’t drink and drive, don’t go out if you’re sick, etc. To me, a “safe” day is when no one in my family gets physically hurt. Maybe it’s a mom thing. I don’t perceive it as referring to stifling major life choices.
To me “stay safe” translates not as “don’t go out or take any risks” but as more of a “I hope you don’t get sick and suffer negative consequences or die”. I take it as a wish for good health and not as a directive of any kind. Sort of like saying “be well” and each person has to determine what that means for them. In a time when 800,000+ ppl have died in this country alone, I think it’s a nice sentiment to express.
Thank you EHD team for all you give to us. I truly enjoy this blog every single day. Happy holidays!
Fair enough. But given that we’re in the midst of a pandemic with a new variant that decided at the last minute to join the festivities, I’d say the encouragement to stay safe is appropriate.
IDK. I personally tell my cats to “stay safe” each morning before letting them out for what I imagine are fantastic, joyous adventures.
Merry Christmas and happy new year Emily, Brian, Jess, Caitlin, Ryann, Mallory, and the whole EHD family!
Thanks for brightening my mornings all year!
P.S. that opening shot is SO sweet and fun!
Merry Christmas!!!?
Merry Christmas and thank you for all the great conversations in 2021! I’m grateful for the community here!
Thank you Emily and team! I love all iterations of this blog- the new life you breathe into it as you grow as a human and the wonderful people you give a voice too! I turned 50 this year and I like hearing from your younger ones! The diversity has been amazing too! And really, the introduction of Orlando alone makes you a good picker! Happy holidays!
Merry Christmas! Thanks for all the posts this year. Why only one dog in the picture though?
Look closer.
I certainly with you and your family all the best for the holiday and 2022! Your wonderful staff also!
This has been an intense year in my life — weeding two people’s possessions down to 40 boxes, moving from one coast to another, camping in a tiny apartment and then finding & furnishing a new house. This blog has been a welcome bright spot in my day. As much as the content which I nearly always enjoy, it’s the tone you set that keeps me coming back. Bless you all!
Bless you, too, Ally! Take care and be well. And Happy Holidays!
Thank you Trudy, and wishing you the same!
Happy Holidays Emily, family and team. Thank you for bringing us great content every single day! And thank you for continuing doing that even when you’re receiving nasty and snippy comments every single day… Have a wonderful time and stay safe ;-)
Merry Christmas and THANK YOU!
Merry Christmas and thank you for the amazing free content. I appreciate you all the way from Windsor in England!
Thanks Emily and team for everything this year. You all brought purpose, consistency and friendly conversation, when scary, intense news abounded. You illustrated sanity, distraction and comfort, in short, you were a gift. Thank you.
This says it perfectly!
So curious about your “expander,” Emily! With your wording, I’m going to (just for fun) guess Lacey Phillips? Either way, looking forward to your Jan. 1 post! Also, huge gratitude to you and EHD Team for your daily posts and for showing up so beautifully in this space. You truly are a bright light in my day. Thank you!

Thank you!! Merry Christmas to you and yours. ? ?
A quick note to say a HUGE thank you for another year chock-full of tasty morsels to read and lovely eye ball treats!
These times, they are a-changing and you guys are keeping up!
Thank you for striving to be good humans and standing for discussing the difficult topics too.?
It’s 110.3F here in Perth, Western Australia! ? Ouch!
Happy Holidays to you, your family, and the team! I hope you have a chance to relax and beget some play time outside! We are all cozy indoors. It’s zero degrees here in Southern Alaska (super cold for us) and extra snowy so the views are stunning from inside.
No, thank YOU (and your team!). I’ve been reading your blog daily for 7+ years and particularly enjoyed your content this year (and naturally feel like you’re an old friend). I have two kids the same age as yours, and similar interests so I loved all your kid content this year. I got into the wine and sent you a love letter after your fab most-used toys post this Christmas (I ordered the spy stuff) but pretty sure I never posted it ?. Hope you have a restorative holiday and can’t wait to see how the farmhouse turns out this year!!
Xoxo
