Sneaky Peaky ...

Target Spring Summer Preview

Emily Henderson Target Spring Summer 2016

Every season most brands do what they call ‘Editor Previews’ which showcase the upcoming season’s line. It’s a home decor runway show, which basically makes me Gigi Hadid. They have ‘long lead’ which is for print magazines and ‘short lead’ for websites/blogs. As Target’s Home Style Expert I get to go, see the pieces in person myself, chat with editors and pitch story ideas. We haven’t documented these for you before, but since they were taking photos I figured why not give you guys the same editor sneak peek? Plus a lot of it just became available so you can get your hands on the goods before they sell out.

Target has a studio space in Chelsea that they use for various events and this time they transformed it into a pretty intense spring wonderland with moss carpet and fern chandeliers. Then they used basic (non-Target) white furniture to prop all their featured items on.

They chose about 1/3 of the upcoming pieces as their ‘feature items’ to style out here. So while there are a lot of pieces here, there are a TON more coming out which are not shown. Some that I don’t even see until I stumble upon them in the store or online.

Here I am chatting with a couple editors about how we thought that Caila was going to be the next bachelorette and how bummed we all were how the 70’s are trending and how we feel about the comeback of shag rugs.

There were a few major design movements this season – first Mediterranean, because the product design team went on an inspiration trip over there last year and came back with a few motifs, color palettes and styles. They have a terrible job, one of which I want in on badly.

Nate’s collection was there as well and it’s looking VERY good per usual.

I will be buying that awesome chunky vase and that lidded box accessory.

I love those pots on their teak stands (there are multiple sizes) and that lantern will don my deck. It’s hard to see the tabletop pieces in this pic, but if you are into bright blues and whites with hits of gold then we’ve got you covered.

One of my favorite pieces is that gray pillow that you see front and center because I feel like it could go with anything  – please note the tassels. Speaking of tassels my other favorite pillow is the colorful tassel piece right next to that one, and the series of kilim pillows on the sofa. The lamp on the far side table is also AWESOME with black dots on the shade.

What you see below is ALMOST a well rested person. I flew in for 23 hours (a 36 hour trip total) which was almost perfect because I got to sleep in a hotel room … by myself. I had dinner by myself in the hotel bar, drank a martini, put on some tanning lotion, wrote a blog post then put myself to bed at 10pm. It would have been so wonderful if I hadn’t woken up at 3am convinced that I lost my baby somewhere. I searched the hotel room (I’m a sleep walker) and then talked myself down, reminding myself that I was in New York and that I hadn’t brought the baby. It was terrifying and then such a relief. The amount of times I’ve done this since I’ve had kids is too annoying to count. Despite that, I still got 7 hours of much needed sleep. The plane ride to and from was almost as pleasant as nobody asked me questions and no toddlers were grabbing my legs. I wrote 5 posts and slept. I always say thatI get more work done on a flight than anywhere else. With the lack of distraction I could go back and forth 2 days in a row I would write the months worth of posts, I swear.

I have rounded up a few of my select favorites, but it is all so good you might as well just head to the store and hoard it all. This stuff sells fast, and once it is gone it is gone unless they decide to reintroduce it. So, call a babysitter, record your favorite show, clear your schedule and head on over to target to scoop it all up.

I’m wearing a Who What Wear for Target top (which has pleats in the back and drapes WONDERFULLY, the blazer was from Bloomingdales but I couldn’t find it online, but I like this one. The skirt is one of my favorites in blush pink faux leather that looks like real leather and the cut is EXTREMELY flattering, what with the flat front and front pockets. The shoes are sold out but I’m OBSESSED with these.

  1. Loved your snaps from this event – happy to see it recapped! I wish those tall white shelves WERE Target – any ideas on where I can find them or something similar??

  2. You look great (amazing what a few extra hours of sleep will do for you : ) BTW I became the lightest sleeper once kids came along. Its like my brain said “nope, can’t fully let your guard down, you’ve got babies to take care of”. And said husband slept like a log …

  3. I love ALLLLLLLLL of this! Would you ever consider doing a post on how to style a dining table for day-to-day? I know you’ve had a lot for special occasions and holidays, but we just got a new table and I’m stuck on what to put on it. It can all be from target– target is my favorite store. Thanks!!

  4. Gosh, love this post. Thank you for making me so excited for spring. Living in the PNW (which I know you know) has me bracing for sun. Color and pillows and tassels OH MY!!

      1. Agree!! And a simple request/suggestion … can we target make pillow covers instead of just pillows?? I’m trying no to store pillows just covers. Thanks!!

  5. I just bought a floor lamp like the sconce above, just in white! It has a lovely feel, the surface is silky matte, and it feels so very expensive, but wasn’t!

Now I want those sconces toooooooooo…

    1. And not to even mention the Marimekko line coming up. I REALLYREALLYREALLY want… need the $500 stand up paddleboard with a Marimekko pattern in my life… Darn it’s just expensive!

    1. Where is pretty going? I miss pretty. Lately everything seems like it’s trying too hard to be edgy or too-cool-to-care-casual. Not Emily–but the products. And Apartment Therapy is getting overrun with ugly…intentional, non-ironical ugly. So weird.

      1. I agree about apartment therapy. Although I think it’s mostly an attempt to be all-inclusive on their part, there has been an increasing number of uninspiring posts featuring dated, 90’s traditional style apartments on their site lately.

  6. After my first daughter was born (this was 10 years ago), I would have nightmares that she was in bed with me and I had lost her, suffocating, in the covers. In those nightmares I was always frantically searching through the covers trying to find her.

  7. I saw those adorable plant stands at my Target last week, and had to keep myself from buying all of them. I’ve been wanting something similar since West Elm began making plant stands a few years back, but I refuse to pay 200 dollars for a plant stand.

I didn’t see the kilim pillows, but that’s a good thing, because I’m going to need all of them! I love your work with the Target line and the sneak peeks it affords us. Thanks!

  8. I loved this post! What a great glimpse into Target behind the scenes. Thanks for letting us see behind the curtain!

  9. wow. Now is the perfect time to be a mom with a house and kids to decorate.

Very much concur about Caila. Jojo’s are a dime a dozen in the Bachelor world.

  10. This was totally my kind of post … even though my plein de tresors house needs nothing, NADA (except a thorough spring clean but since I just painted my nails a pretty orchid color it is not gonna happen), and I am supposedly being “good” saving for a big family trip to Egypt. Whatever.

Back in the earlier part of this century when my husband and I lived in Kathmandu we spent time volunteering in Chitwan after a devastating flood; we were part of an exhaustive rescue of a newborn rhino who had been separated from its (his) mother. He would’ve been super-yummy tiger food. That little baby was so scared of all these people, of not having his mommy, of being so tired and hungry, too. But we saved him on a Tuesday (and he then earned the name of Mangal, “Tuesday” in Nepali) and coincidentally enough I fell in love with him on that same Tuesday! The rest of our life in Kathmandu I flew down every fortnight or so to visit him and the hardest I cried was the last time I saw him — we were moving out of Nepal. From abroad we continued to support our baby financially.

I’d woven a sleeping mat for Mangal and he had his own armed guard at night as he slept. He snuggled in my lap; I fed him his special bottle; I loved Mangal madly.

So when I saw the Nate Berkus pic with the gold rhino I nearly went apoplectic to get to the Target website … but either it’s not online or not yet for sale.

Needless to say I LOVED seeing that particular photo, but I kinda dug all of them. What a sweet, emotional goose this post was. Thank you.

  11. I have the rattan basket! When I saw it I thought “Emily would buy this!” and then I bought it (and wondered if you get Target things for free) and then went into a huge daydream about what I would do if I got Target things for free.

  12. Also, I forgot to add, I LOVE when we get behind the scenes looks from you. It’s unlike any other design blog I follow. It makes me feel like I’m a VIP and I love hearing all about the process and how this whole design world works. Thanks!!

  13. Ahh, I’m a crazy sleepwalker and many nights I get up in a semi-awake state and decide I need to leave my house IMMEDIATELY. Eventually I snap out of it and realize I’m standing outside of my apartment in just a t-shirt and no shoes, which is a great look. Why can’t our brains just let us sleep?

I love everything, and I’m super intrigued by the idea of Target’s secret NYC event space. BRB, gotta go nose around Chelsea looking for bullseyes…

  14. Love this sneak peek! One thing that’s annoyed me about Target’s pillows the last few years is that while the patterns are cute, where did the removable down inserts go?! Remember when all the pillows lent themselves perfectly to karate chopping and now they’re sitting on the shelf all stiff-like. No likey.

  15. Oh how I wish Target would open a store (or even a website) in the UK. Stylish and affordable in this country is woefully lacking. British home styling is limited to accent walls with matching cushions, rugs and curtains and you can only choose between purple, red, teal, black or lime. I feel quite sulky seeing all this lovely stuff and not being able to buy it!

Sorry about my tiny rant – it’s obviously not Emily Henderson’s fault – she’s wonderful!

  16. Hi! I purchased the yarn dyed pillows a few months ago and fell in love with them in my bedroom. I tried to go back and purchase the hassle pillow and the yarn dyed lumbar pillow but they have been out of stock and unavailable. I’m so disappointed… any recommendations on how/where to snag them somehow to complete my bedroom decor? Thank you!
