Well folks, I am pleased to say this is a fashion trend that comes around often, so in fact, I am a little wary of even calling it a trend. It is very likely you already own a pair of cowboy boots and just haven’t pulled them out of your closet since the last time you went to a line dancing bar. Or, maybe you are like me and have always had an affinity toward western flair. In any case, we are seeing people rock cowboy boots EVERYWHERE and the outfits are making us swoon. Even in this summer heat, cowboy boots are an unexpected staple that makes a simple outfit feel bold and exciting. But don’t just take my word for it. Let’s explore:
The first outfit formula is long denim shorts, a t-shirt, blazer, and tall cowboy boots. Okay, my interest is piqued!! I love the mix of high and low that makes the outfit feel fresh and exciting. The above photos make such a strong case for this outfit but I have to say I want to see this look on a different body type. I am a size 12/14 so it would be nice to see it on a similar size. What can I say, I am high maintainence! But since I am the one making the case here, I decided to try this on myself to see if it checks out on a size 12/14:
Shorts | Shirt | Blazer (similar) | Boots (similar) | Purse
Okay I am not mad about this! The blazer definitely helps elevate the look and essentially creates a look that’s an easy step above the classic cowboy boots paired with cutoff shorts (which is still a great look IMO). If I were to perfect this outfit, I would probably go for a more oversized jacket but I think the outfit formula itself is a winner. This is an outfit I can see wearing to dinner and feeling pulled together yet comfortable.
Prairie dresses and cowboy boots are a match made in chic western heaven! The photo on the left has been on my mind since January 2022 when I wrote this post about the tall boot trend. There is something magic about a hyper feminine dress paired with rustic cowboy boots. In the same vein, a dress with dramatic puff sleeves contrasts with rugged cowboy boots in a really cool way.
Fashion influencer Jessica Torres further proves that a dress and cowboy boots is simply killer. I love how she paired a patterned dress with boots and kept the whole outfit black and white. So cute.
Are you telling me that I, a woman living in 2022, am extremely into this maxi denim skirt outfit?? Because, wow, I really want to be galavanting around NYC in this outfit (even if it is 100 degrees and humid). I think the long skirt with a small tank top works so well with cowboy boots because it’s extremely simple so the boots really make a statement. The belt also adds to the western flair and really pulls the outfit together. I’ll call this a 10/10.
If you need a little more convincing, here are three more outfits we love:
Now if you are in the market, here are some of our favorite cowboy boots:
1. Otto Mini Western Boot | 2. Mezcalero Maye White Israel Boot | 3. New Frontier Western Boot | 4. Buffalo Silver | 5. Leena Faux Leather Cowboy Boot | 6. Women’s Shana Cowboy Boots | 7. Otto Mini Western Boot | 8. Public Desire Wide Fit Howdy | 9. Vegan Ranch Boot
Reformation just dropped their new line of cowboy boots and I’ll bet they are even better looking in person. I personally love #5 for the color, style, and price, and #4 is also a top pick for me because the silver toe box adds such a fun bit of flair.
1. Lasso Lessons Western Boots | 2. Estrella Boot | 3. We The Free Montage Tall Boots | 4. Hayward Boot | 5. Mount Suede Desert Taupe | 6. Solei Boots | 7. Steve Madden Lasso Cowboy Boot | 8. Olive Western Boot | 9. Brayden Tall Boots | 10. Mount Dallas Black White | 11. Mermaid Doodle Boots | 12. UO Sierra Cowboy Boot
Lucchese is an iconic brand that has been making cowboy boots since 1883 and they have soo many classic styles, but I am drooling over #2. Those star decals are so cool. Speaking of cool, this pair by Brother Vellies has my jaw on the floor. They are handmade and hand-painted so if you are looking for a pair that is SPECIAL, these are your guy. If you are looking to dip your toes into this trend and want something classic, you can’t go wrong with #4.
Alright y’all, that’s all for now. Let me know if you are already pulling out your cowboy boots to try out any of these looks. Happy Saturday! xx
Yes to cowgirl boots! I have a pair of black Frye cowgirl boots that are an instant seratonin booster every time I wear them! I love the cut-offs and boots look, especially with tights in the fall. I bet adding tights with your blazer outfit would also look great, Ryann! Thanks for this lovely round-up, pun intended. 😉
ugh thank you! I just bought a pair of short tecovas and have been STRUGGLING for outfits. All I seem to put together make it seem like I’m a high school senior about to go take her senior pictures with her horse in the pasture. Here’s to a shopping spree to make it edgier!
Huh. It occurs to me that my hoarding has paid off and I should have everything I need to pull off this look from the pieces I kept from 20 years ago. And maybe now I’ll be able to unload all those boots on Poshmark!
I have a pair of pink cowgirl boots and LOVE THEM, I get loads of compliments when I wear them. If you’re able to go a store to try them on, do it – so fun. Also, I am a women’s shoe size 8.5, and was able to buy from the KIDS section – they were about half the price of adult boots.
My mom also buys her boots from the kids section!
I’ve always loved cowboy boots! I’m noticing that the height of the boot is critical to the outfit working. Even a few inches taller makes a big difference, especially with shorts, the closer the top of the boot is to the knee is more flattering in my opinion.
People wear and use them for real here where I live so I would never wear this look just to be on trend. I would feel like a fraud. Haha. Fine for other folks though
Totally get it. My brother is a legitimate cowboy – works on a ranch and does horseback shooting competitions and everything, and I know he’d poke fun at me if he were to see me wearing these for fashion. Now I’m kinda torn though because I realized I actually like how cowgirl boots look on me after trying some on in the store the other day. I’m a military vet, and I guess the same can be said for people wearing camo and combat boots as fashion. I wear cute camo stuff sometimes, but I feel like I can because I used to wear it for real. I might feel like a poser wearing it if I’d never been in the military, or at least into hunting or something where camo is worn for a real purpose.
No thanks, not for me. In five years from now you’re going to look back and say, “what was I thinking?” Same goes for Ugg boots! Yuck!
That’s funny. I have boots that are 30+ years old that I wear regularly. Def disagree!
I used to look back on photos and say to myself “what was I thinking?” Until recently. I was just following trends with my lug sole loafers in 1998, I certainly want the only one wearing them even if they looked…specific. Why should I judge myself for following a trend? I was in my early twenties and looked fabulous but maybe not timeless. I’d rather look timeless now, in my 40’s but probably because I had so much fun with trends in my twenties. Remember you were in good company back when you tried new things, why judge yourself?
I’m loving this look for the fall! Mikoleon has superb quality cowboy boots as well! I bought a pair for my daughter and was blown away by the craftsmanship.
Any recommendations for great cowgirl boots that are vegan/faux? Would love any recs!
Check out missheel.com for vegan leather. I saw a girl wearing an adorable tall white pair from there (I asked her where she got them haha) and am debating ordering.
I’ve never had cowboy boots (I don’t even know where you’d buy them in Australia) but they just look super uncomfortable – like stiff and heavy and hard to break in! Please tell me I’m wrong!
So cowboy boots are kind of an upfront comfort investment. Once they are broken in they are AMAZING. Also vintage cowboy boots are less expensive and they only look better over time! Full disclosure, this is advice coming from a Texan.
Rachel….Bob Katter wears them!!!! 🤣🤣 Too funny!! 😘
the best boots are of course, vintage. Have fun shopping y’all- cowboy boots can be so so great
Yess love the diversity of the photos here!! More of this please!
To be specific: Diversity of *people* in the photos. Thank you!
I have 18 pairs of cowboy boots . Some are 30 years old. Never out of style. But then again I live in Tennessee
My son just bought me my first pair of cowgirl boots while we were on a family vacation in Colorado and going to the rodeo. But, I definitely plan to use them more now that I’m back home in southern California. Maybe not in the heat of the summer, but in the fall, for sure. Love all these great ideas for how to pair them with different outfits! Thanks!
What are the snakeskin boots and white and leather boots that Emily is wearing in the photos for this article?
The white boots are the Cowboy Boot from The Great: https://thisisthegreat.com/products/the-cowboy-boot-natural
The snakeskin boots were the Shanta Bootie from Dolce Vita. If you happen to wear an 8.5, they are available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Dolce-Vita-Shanta-Black-Stella/dp/B07T78ZXK4/
I’m SO bummed you only included TWO REAL cowboy boot brands! And missed two icons that are MADE IN THE USA! Y’all need to shop Nocona and Tony Lama, both brands with styles made in North America (factory is close to Lucchese).
Other great REAL cowboy boot brands (you will never catch me wearing cowboy boots from Urban Outfitters or Free People or Asos) are Justin, Tecovas, Frye, Anderson Bean, and Lane.
I thought this too but felt it would be a futile comment. But now there are 2 of us! I agree- would never wear free people cowboy boots and for anyone who is scared of looking silly- buying corporate fashion boots is only going to make it worse. Buy the real deal (and find them less expensive vintage) and you will likely have bought a pair of boots you will own for the rest of your life.
I have quite a collection of Old Gringos: https://oldgringoboots.com/
Amazing designs/patterns. You can get some really loud ones, if you’re into making statements
Hi Ryann, I love this look on you, but as a size 14 myself, I noticed the shorts seems to work with the blazer when they are wide leg shorts instead of fitted. Kind of like going from skinny jeans to the wide leg fit, but in shorts. Just IMHO, it looks a little more elevated.
A little off topic but can you share where Emily’s blue dress is from? I’ve been searching but can’t track it down. Thanks!!
“I’ve had this dress for almost 20 years. It’s from the ’80s and when I bought it at a thrift store I shortened it to make it more fun and youthful. I wore it on DesignStar (the first and the last episode- see below) and the photo above was my headshot on the blog (back when it was THE BRASS PETAL) for a while.” https://stylebyemilyhenderson.com/blog/styling-the-same-10-year-old-pieces-sustainable-fashion
