Another Design Box Checked – The Kids’ Bath Wallpaper Reveal!

Well, well, well. A year and a half after the “reveal”, I finally did the update that this bathroom always wanted – wallpaper, and it looks so good that even my kids noticed and went out of their way to tell me! There is nothing sweeter than your 11-year-old son saying “Mama, I love the wallpaper” before you even have time to point it out. I always knew that this bathroom wanted wallpaper above the tile and trim, but I needed to shoot it and I hadn’t found the right paper. It was still pretty beforehand, but now it’s just so much better.

Before Wallpaper

Here’s how we shot it in August of 2023, it really remained the same for the most part. The art fell down off the tile (dumb Command strips) but otherwise, it was sweet and worked. So I kept my eye out for the perfect pattern and colorway…

Choosing The Right Paper

I fell in love with a few of these from Graham & Brown, ordered some samples, and was delighted that there were many that I loved.

Left: Ruskin (Green) | Middle: Folklore Tree (Blue) | Right: Folklore Tree (Sage)

While the middle blue one looks so powerful on camera (and I think maybe one on stories?), I went with the green colorway on the right that has hits of blue in it just so it felt a little more timeless and less saturated I guess? I think the intense color on top with the green tile might have been too much, whereas the green obviously spoke to the floor, more in harmony.

The Reveal

Folklore Tree (Sage)

I LOVE IT. The “wood” of the branches speaks to the warmer tones in the room (like the vanity and the gold fixtures) and the green and blue work so well with the green tile and blue accents (like the curtains and the vintage dog painting).

I love that the green vintage light fixture still pops off it nicely without getting too lost. And while I was open to changing out the curtains (I mean, it was just yardage that I iron hemmed and hung up) I think this looks so fun and cute. The colors are great together and the scale of the large gingham is offset so nicely with the organic movement of the wallpaper pattern.

The bathroom just feels so much more finished, like it was always meant to be this way.

The only thing/s that I’m still debating are: Do I add crown molding? My typical answer would be yes, but outside the tub niche, it would end up being just a little sliver. But you could skip the molding on that front part (maybe, unsure about that) and just do the perimeter of the room… I also might add cafe curtains IF I find the right pattern, but I’m not terribly motivated to persist on that one. Like sure, it could look cute but there is a lot happening already – we may have hit our whimsy quota.

It’s another box checked and only 3 years after we moved in which I don’t think is THAT bad. I actually am loving adding these layers in a slower (and less stressful way).

It’s just so happy and feels appropriate to the house (Scandinavian farmhouse vibes FTW). The organic nature of it contrasts well with the tile, too. With the green floor/wall tile border looking like grass and the wallpaper clearly being a forest, we have a fully executed theme in here 🙂 What do you think??

This just went from being a bathroom I really liked to one of my favourite rooms ever!
Crown molding wouldn’t work well with the shower and tub niches, and cafe curtains would compete with the tub curtains.
It’s perfect as is!

Couldn’t love it more. It looks complete in a way it didn’t before. Fantastic

It has just the right amount of whimsy and charm! I think you’re right that adding crown molding above the shower niche would reduce the wallpaper exposure to an awkward strip. On the day to day, do the kids use the hanging bath towels to dry their hands, or do you drape a handtowel on the sink? I haven’t chosen to put up handtowel rings in my remodeled old home bath, yet (?) but keep debating…

The paper totally finishes the room and ties the flooring with the rest of the room. It looks awesome

I’m not usually a wallpaper person, but this looks so good!!! It really does look more complete and finished, but also just so much more charming and fun than before. Perfect choice!

I love the addition of the wallpaper and I think that it ties in the shower curtain really well. Could you add just a very narrow crown molding (like a quarter round) and paint it the dark green of the tile?

I’ve never hung a picture using a Command hook that hasn’t ended up broken on the floor within a month. But I wanted to hang some canvases on my kitchen backsplash without drilling through the slab and used Dual Lock “tape” (e.g. heavy duty 2 inch velcro strips) that very firmly attaches to the wall on one side and to your art on the other side and has been hanging for over 4 years now without incident. HIghly recommend, though as with anything, watch the weight guidelines. If there is any question about the ‘velcro’ attaching to the art work, use a wood/upholstery staple or two to make sure it is fully attached.

Looks great! What if rather than chunky crown moulding, you just did a picture rail at the ceiling? You see that in a lot of old houses especially in the bedrooms and bathrooms. It’s only a 2.5″ H profile and then you’d be able to hang art off it as well!

Rather than crown molding, would you consider papering the ceiling? This would expand your theme of trees above and grass below, and would perhaps feel more cohesive than the strip of paper between white tile below and white painted ceiling above. Could be fun in the tub nook, if doing the whole room feels like too much.

WOW. I thought this bathroom was cute before, so I’m kind of shocked how much more I like it now. The wallpaper really takes it to the next level. It’s so warm and lovely.

What a wonderful addition! I love how the wallpaper turned out! I vote no trim – mostly because it currently looks like you’re in some magical outdoor bathroom with beautiful foliage peeking over the walls and adding trim would cover that up

Joining the chorus of “it was lovely before, but even better now!” sentiments. You truly make me wish we didn’t have textured plaster walls in 90% of our home (so wallpaper is a no go). This pattern is perfect and I bet the additional color and warmth will add much needed coziness on our long grey days.
The only way I would add cafe curtains would be just a simple white (maybe with a tone on tone detail at the hem?) to match the color of the trim/tile. So adding a bit of texture/privacy but no more pattern.
FWIW, I’m loving seeing the farmhouse evolve over time. This is how most of us design our own homes, so it feels so much more relatable and real than a finished forever reveal.

As I was reading through the post and before I reached your last paragraph, I was thinking “so happy and nature inspired.” You thoroughly and joyously nailed it!

I LOVE IT!!! It ties everything together and I for one love a subtle theme. It’s just enough whimsy, especially for a kids bathroom. It is bright and cheery. What a great space to start or end your day! Lucky kiddos!

Love the wallpaper, especially the view towards the mirror/sink. But the view towards the bathtub now looks a little too busy with me. What would solid curtains look like instead of the check/gingham?
I think crown molding would be too much. I would not add it.

Frankly, I thought adding wallpaper was a bad idea, and it felt like overkill. But then I saw the AFTER pics and it’s utterly perfect. Looks like it was meant to be – all the colours together are amazing!! No need for crown.

Hello! Please don’t take this the wrong way, as I’m a long time, very regular reader of your blog, but your designs have gotten a big safe over the last few years. However, the addition of this wallpaper to this room is absolutely stunning 😍! It’s the perfect wallpaper, too. Though I’m still debating whether or not its not enough (if there were fewer tiles & more wallpaper), or if it’s just the right amount, there’s no denying the fact that if I was scrolling IG or Pinterest, pictures of this bathroom would leave me absolutely gobsmacked!
So, just in case you haven’t heard this yet today, you’ve still got it!! Gorgeous room. Way to go!!

Emily, this is a GREAT bathroom! Your kids are incredibly lucky to have such a beautiful space that will grow with them. I personally think that it is fine without adding crown moulding or any other details.

If you search eBay for Turquoise & Tan Vase Ceramic Pottery 10″, I think that’s the same vase on the tub tray.

I’ve been looking forward to seeing this, and I couldn’t be happier with how it caps off the room and balances the floor tile perfectly. I’d be delighted to bathe and get ready in this space. I think crown moulding would be too much, it’s just right with the details now.
