As much as I love new glass modern houses (and I truly do) they can go cold and stark really easily. So when method approached me to style the living and dining room of a very modern house using their product as my inspiration I thought that while styling a room based on soap wasn’t the usual ask, their brand is really clean, fresh, young, happy and colorful which is something that I can get into. I personally love soap. All over my house and body, especially non-toxic safe soap that comes in nice looking bottles that are easy to refill. We forged a partnership with a few other YouTube folk which you can read all about here: methodhometour.com
My goal was to take the bright punchy feel of the product and layer it on top of what was already at the house – really simple, streamlined pieces. The house needed personality and I, Emily-“loves-lots-of-pretty-things’-Henderson, can do “personality” with my eyes closed.Â
Here is what the house looked like before we got our grubby (in this case “clean” *winky wink) little hands on it:Â
After I saw the pictures of the house I pulled a rough design plan starting with the colors – bright pinks and greens, (inspired by the method bottles), with a fairly simple Scandinavian meets California vibe. That basically means bohemian and bright, but with paired back shapes and lines.Â
These kinds of projects are really my jam because it’s not the hard stuff – I don’t have to figure out the electrical plan or choose between 10 different tones of virtually the same flooring. It’s all of the really fun stuff, and the process goes as follows: Buy beautiful things, style, play and move them around ’til you’ve found the perfect balanced composition.
Come back the 19th to see the full reveal in video form. Meanwhile, here are some of my pics from the set last week. We had an hour to install which isn’t exactly a lot of time, but with the right people and the right pieces we pulled it off.Â
Also, I wore wool blanket disguised as a dress in 95 degree heat, 9 months pregnant. I love that blanket dress but perhaps a linen or silk would have been a better choice what with my condition and all.
Come back October 19th for the video and photos of the whole reveal. It was COLORFUL, fun and everything is sourceable, too.
Stay tuned, come back and don’t forget to wash your hands with method.
What a tease! This looks so fun. Can’t wait till the 19th……PS – love your blanketdress. You are the Queen of sprinkling personality and making a house a home.
Can’t wait to see how this one turns out, your moodboards and colors in the video look so fun.
I have to say, I am so impressed with that little video and how natural you are in front of the camera. I HATE watching and listening to myself on camera-it’s just painful. But you’re a pleasure to watch! I guess actually being on TV probably helped! And I cannot wait to see the reveal!
Whaooh! That painting over the teak sideboard is amazing. I can’t wait to see it better. And, you know, I just realized that you look like a mix between gwyneth paltrow and naomi watts, is that weird to say?!! its a compliment! you must hear that all the time.
Hi Emily and team- This is off topic, but I came across a photo of Emily’s house being used to sell wallpaper on an etsy shop. The shop is based in Latvia, so I’m guessing they don’t have approval to use the photo. I don’t want to promote them here, but if you want their info, let me know.
Love Method products – I’m excited to see the full reveal!
Looks like a blast! What an awesome house to start out with! Can’t wait to see if infused with personality! The dress is very cool (well, apparently not literally) and GREEN, yay! I wonder if you’d consider hemming it up a bit. Not too short, but above the knee? I also really like the blue shirt you have on in the video, too.
Can’t wait to see the final project! Styling a space based on soap – that sounds like a lot of fun.

Howdy,
I’m just wondering how you justify leaning a big painting against the wall vs hanging it (I’m noticing the sideboard in the dining room). I guess if you plan to rotate your art around frequently it makes sense, but I think it’s safer to hang a big painting, don’t you? Otherwise I’d worry about its sliding off or bumping/rubbing against whatever other objects are on the sideboard (which might include food, drink, plants, etc). Of course, the photo I’m seeing might not be the final version–maybe you just leaned it against the wall to gauge the effect before hanging it….?
I can’t tell if this is just a personal problem, but ever since the blog redesign made its debut, new blog posts don’t automatically appear when I visit stylebyemilyhenderson.com
In order to view new posts, I have to click on the little EH icon on the left to redirect me to a page that shows the most recent posts. There have also been a few posts recently (last few weeks or so) that don’t have a “read more” link at the end of the post preview on the home page, so I literally have to copy & paste the blog post title into google in order to find/read the post in its entirety.
It’s kinda cumbersome, but I spend my time doing it, so I guess I just really like this blog. Anyway, this may just be a problem I’m experiencing, but I hope not. If it is…I will keep on googling.
Thanks!
I’m having that issue, too! Love the blog though 🙂
I am having the same problem…
I am also.
Can’t wait to see the final product and I love the blanket dress! 😉
I am a minimalist in real life, I find the sterile modern look just more practical for my lifestyle. But in my fantasy life, I dig your boho, colorful, eclectic vintage aesthetic so I really really really want to see what you can do with this!
Excellent work is done . Thanks for share this type of informative post.
This is lovely and I cannot wait to see the end result.
Btw: this is how sponsored posts are well done! Relevant content, in keeping with the vibe/mission of the blog and not a push to shop for things unrelated to EH. Kudos!
I can’t wait to see how this turns out! You always have the best design ideas!

Just FYI I am pretty sure it’s “pared back”, not “paired back”. Love, the grammar lady.
