The Link Up: Emily’s Family-Friendly Holiday Movie, Arlyn’s $8 Wifi Plug She LOVES, And The Coziest Heated Blanket On The Market

Hi folks! Welcome back to the link up, December edition. Yes it’s already December and yes that is a disorienting fact but that won’t stop us from bringing you our latest and greatest obsessions. Let’s jump in.

This week’s home tour, via Rue Mag, is a perfect example of mixing wood tones, textiles, and art to achieve a minimal and elevated design but that’s not the only exciting thing about the space. It is one of three bungalows in Montauk, NY that is available to rent through Airbnb and the twist is everything inside is for sale (!!). Talk about the perfect safe vacation experience.

From Emily: Suzanne has tried out 4 different heated blankets and swears this one is the best because one side is fleece and the other side is faux fur.

Also from Emily: JINGLE JANGLE is this year’s family-friendly holiday movie. Fun music, AMAZING costumes, great acting, art direction, and of course a heartwarming story with a super talented diverse cast and crew.

From Ryann: My new best friend is Joanna Spicer, a beauty vlogger that is so funny and real and gives REALLY amazing product recommendations. I actually think we could be real-life best friends so Joanna, if you are reading this, LET’S BE REAL-LIFE BEST FRIENDS. I’ve discovered so many new brands via her youtube including Sleeper, Donni, The Lobby, Loops Beauty, and so many more and I literally trust everything she says is worth buying. Plus she has a very cool 80s/Art Deco style and her new studio/office reveal is very good.

From Malcolm: The power of representation is real! My sister read the book Brown Boy Brown Boy What Can You Be? by Ameshia Arthur to my three-year-old nephew, and his reaction to the character in the book was “he looks like me!”. Cue emotions. This seems like such a nuanced product to recommend, but there really is something powerful to be said about seeing ourselves positively represented in an array of careers and occupations. To this day, my sisters and I reminisce about books that we read as children, and how they impacted the trajectory of our lives (most of which certainly did not have central Black characters), so it warms my heart that my nephew feels seen and capable of anything. The sky’s the limit!

From Jess: 2020 is trying to make sure I NEVER forgot it. How you may ask? Well, this past Tuesday night I decided that I really needed to food prep some healthy food because there was no way that my current diet was helping my overall mental health. So as I was chopping up some kale, my knife slipped and stabbed me good in the wrist. Ok, it was technically my fault but really 2020?! Luckily I still had (and still have) total hand function and I really didn’t want to go to the ER. Those bills didn’t seem worth it. I won’t go on a rant about our healthcare system but like wouldn’t it have been swell if I could have just gone to the ER without fear of near bankruptcy… for a mere flesh wound? Just saying. Ok back to my story. So after a hysterical (not the funny kind) call to my father, I realized that all I had were small bandaids from “the adhesive on the protective packaging no longer holds together” years ago. So I used a random nonstick pad, masking tape, and an elastic bandage to hold me over till morning. I guess this is more of a cautionary tale to tell you to make sure that you have either a real first aid kit like this one or bandaids of multiple sizes (including large ones). Lastly, make sure when using really sharp knives, also use a very sturdy cutting board. My really thin and light one may be going into retirement.

Also From Jess: My favorite person on Instagram, Crystal Anderson, reposted her and her now fiance, Kiesh’s love story. I forgot how much it just cuts through me in the most beautiful way and watching it instantly improved my day. If you haven’t seen it before watch it immediately and if you have, do yourself a favor and watch it again. The pureness of their love and how deeply they see each other is nothing but a gift to witness.

From Arlyn: Hands down, the greatest $8 I’ve ever spent on “Christmas decor” is this Wi-Fi plug. I plugged my Christmas lights into it and can control it all right from my phone. I’m able to schedule what time it turns on and off, put it on a timer or just manually operate right from my bed (i.e. never again will I have to crawl out of bed at midnight because I forgot to unplug the lights). It’s a Christmas miracle!”

From Mallory: Have I told you about my favorite wine glasses yet???? They’re these awesome guys from Crate and Barrel and they ROCK. Some nice wine glasses are super thin and breakable (which ain’t cool) but these are just sturdy enough to be pretty but not tooo thin of glass. Plus the shape is so good. It would make a great gift! I actually bought them for my parents as a gift once and they love them too. (They also have them in a red wine glass which is also great.)

From Albie: I am obsessed with these Gold Cabinet Pulls Acrylic Drawer Pulls for the upcoming kitchen reno & can’t wait to see how chic they’ll look.

From Caitlin: My mom recently bought one of these Oreo Holiday House kits and IT IS SO SO SO GOOD. (If you are keeping track, YES I have written about my mom every week for the past month because I am a huge sucker and very happy to be spending time with her after 8 months alone in my apartment!!!) ANYWAY, I’m pretty sure the target audience for these kits are children but I’m 29 and she’s youthful as ever and this kit has us giggling like baby cherubs. We actually got ours at the local Christmas Tree Shop but a quick google shows that it should be available at most major retailers in case you don’t want to chance it with shipping! (Next up: the Hershey’s version!!)

Alright friends, that’s all from us for now. Have a great Sunday and we’ll see you back here tomorrow with a brand new reveal:)

How do you guys not answer the questions regarding insider community engagement? I would think it’s important to respond to retain current members and perhaps draw additional interest.

Ooooh don’t use hydrogen peroxide!!! In fact, you should probably update the post to remove the mention of it so people don’t continue to think it is good for first aid.

They’ve always recommended against it for puncture wounds, and now they’re saying don’t use it at all. A quick search will back me up on this one

Hope your hand is okay! Kitchen injuries are the worst

I was just coming here to say this.

Also, there’s some belief that antibiotic cream is not so good, either.

Plain ol’ soap and water. Let it dry. Wrap it lightly. Go to the ER if you need to.

It’s the Oreo cookie house. It’s a gingerbread house with Oreos.

Ooh I can attest to the Tour glasses being awesome and non-breakable. Some years back I worked at Crate&Barrel as seasonal help and during our orientation the GM was talking about Tour and demonstrated its durability by hitting the side of the glass on the edge of a table repeatedly. ?

This is for Jess whose small and justified rant about our healthcare system made me laugh and cringe … I’m so glad your wrist is ok!

Also, I was told by two nurse friends that hydrogen peroxide only belongs on your laundry now (great to remove stains!) but not your wounds. (Because it’s so destructive to the healthy skin around the wound, it’s not being recommended for inclusion in first aid kits anymore.) I was shocked, but it was confirmed by my doctor. That said, I am not one! So please, everyone, do your own research!

OMG, down the Joanna Spicer rabbit hole and I am OBSESSED, thank you! Finally, a curated suggestion for me to see what to buy at Glossier and how to apply it. Best Find Ever!

Side note – she is a hoot!

Hey Jess, so sorry to hear about your kitchen accident and hope you’re doing okay! I recently watched a video where a chef says to get as large a cutting board as fits on your counters for better stability and easier prep. He showed the OXO good grips 14.5″ x 21″ board, and said it was just about the cheapest major life upgrade out there. I bought one and have to agree! No more tiny, frustrating cutting boards that spin when you’re trying to use them while your vegetables roll all over the counter and floor!

Jess, I bought these cutting boards from Target last year, and they are great for the nonslip feature.

Ryann, it was fun to take a step into my past and watch Joanna Spicer’s 80’s design office reveal. Not my style… I’m not sure I liked much of it in the 80’s… but super fun (she implemented it well), and she is so engaging.

Arlyn, WiFi plugs are a must for holiday decor!

Albie, love the pulls! Can’t wait to see more of the kitchen design and reveal.

Finally, I love the weekly home tour! It’s always my favorite part of the Sunday link-up. It’s fun to revisit and discover other sites to immerse myself in great design.

I read somewhere that chefs will often put a damp bar rag under their cutting boards to keep them from sliding around on the counter. I think a large, beautiful cutting board is absolutely a worthwhile investment, but thought I’d pass that along in case you find yourself with a subpar cutting board and need to keep it from sliding around.

Whenever I move, I always learn about the available healthcare options closest to my home, particularly immediate care facilities who often can treat many of the needs that people otherwise rely on ERs for when their usual doctor is not available.

Even with health insurance the ER is a big expense! We have a pretty good policy and payed $450 when my daughter dislocated her knee this summer. They took an image and sent us on our way.

Hi everyone, thanks for great recommendations as usual. It has been a while since we have seen your team and I am losing track of who’s who. Maybe a new profile post sometime soon? Unless I am the only one feeling this way?

Weird! The link is working for me. Are you in the US? Sometimes I find that if you’re in Canada or outside the US, those Amazon links get screwy!

Hi Arlyn!

Thanks for responding :)

I am indeed in Canada so that’s likely why the link is wonky…I also tried the link from your latest post (In Support of Buying Yourself Presents/What I Bought Myself During Black Friday) but alas no luck!

I too want to avoid the hassle of getting up at night to unplug the Christmas lights so I’m really keen to know what product you purchased…your product rec’s have ALWAYS been on point (thank you! still loving your foaming face wash & all your kitchen products I purchased for my recent-ish move to Nova Scotia).

LOVED the thanksgiving pics of you & Charles…I could see/feel the love radiating from his smile, so sweeet!

Xx

I didn’t see the exact one on the .ca version of Amazon, but here was the title of the US listing if it helps you in your search “Gosund Smart Plug Compatible with Alexa, Google Home, Smart Outlet No Hub Needed (2Pack)”. The ones that pulled up looked very similar, but nothing exact :( good luck!!

Tell me where does the information come from that peroxide does not help with wounds? Indeed, all of us have been taught since childhood that when a cut is made, the first thing to do is to disinfect the wound with hydrogen peroxide, so that it stops bleeding. I was shocked that this cannot be used. And then what to replace it with, what other means stops bleeding? The same question is of interest to all employees of HVAC contractors. I, like many readers of this site, do repairs and injuries are not complete. Now I’m confused, what should I use when I next cut?

We saw the movie “Godmothered” this past weekend and loved it! I think it’s a new classic. I have two girls, 7 & 11 and they both loved it too — so did my husband! Pretty sure it’s a Disney movie.

Jess, I’m so sorry about your hand—that’s so scary to have happen when you’re alone! I’m married to an ER doc so I would be remiss if I didn’t hop on here to say that the hoops one has to jump through for healthcare are just as frustrating for the providers as for the patients. We need insurance reform every bit if not MORE than healthcare reform. Also, if it’s an actual emergency don’t EVER hesitate to just go in, but everyone should keep in mind that right now our nation’s emergency rooms are overflowing with very ill Covid patients—there simply aren’t enough beds, staff and resources available at many hospitals. So if you do deem that a “mere flesh wound” could be treated at an urgent care, best to star there. Sending you love and healing thoughts. ?
