Artwork from Oh Joy’s episode, #4

Joy did a behind the scenes post over here where she credited all the artwork – which i was going to do OF COURSE, but man she made it easy for me.  Thanks, Joy.

So here goes:

The prints above the couch are {from left to right}: lady print by Peggy Wolf, floral hedgehog byChipmunk Cheeks, vintage poodle print from Rosebowl flea market, popsicle print by Anna Tillett, heart by CDR, portrait by Gemma Correll, bird print by Yumi Yumi, Manhattan print by Jim Datz for Three Potato Four, lemon print by Dear Colleen, lady print by Peggy Wolf, Swan girl print bySophie Blackall, rabbit by Fifi Lapin, and buildings by Julia Rothman.

What i love about all of them is that they are a. awesome. b. NOT expensive, c. not ubiquitious (pretty sure i spelled that wrong, but at least i used a big word) but at the same time accessible.  I’m not an artist, so i don’t pretend to paint paintings for the episodes. At the same time i don’t want just a ton of wall mirrors up.  Etsy is amazing.  I’m buying a bunch of stuff today actually from different artists too.  It’s just so refreshing to get unique art at affordable prices.

Let me know if we missed anybody.  And if you are an artist whose work you would love to be on SFAS please email me through contact and i’ll put you in the file for when your work would be appropriate for an episode.  And i’m not looking for handouts here, i want to pay you for your work.

Oh and the art diy hanging that i did, totally works.  The funny thing is i’m the 900 holes in my wall kinda of girl, i just go for it and then move everything around, but after i did this diy and it worked, i’m cured.  It takes a little patience and you can’t be a total art ADD mind changer all the time.

So here are the steps:

compose the artwork on the ground keep everything balanced without being perfectly symmetrical – in color and size and visual weight.  Easier said than done, but just make sure that your colors are evenly distributed, the sizes are evenly distributed and if you have one larger painting or print, balance it out with a couple smaller on the other side (if you don’t have a larger one to work with).

make a paper template the size of the frame.

mark on the paper where EXACTLY the art should be hung (stretch up the wire, etc)

take a picture just in case

transfer all paper onto wall in same composition

nail paper through wall in marked spots

rip off paper VERY DRAMATICALLY.  this is important. if you meekly rip off the paper you will regret it for the rest of your life.  get violent.

hang artwork on nails.  i think this composition ended up changing…or maybe not, i don’t remember.

boom, done.

Thanks to all the artists who contributed.  The wall looked awesome.

Send me art links. I’m honestly always up for new artists.  But don’t be offended if i don’t get back to you soon, i’ll file stuff away for when its needed.

ok bye,  now.

Love, LOVE the lamps by the couch!! Who makes them?! Where did you buy them?! I have to know! And keep on keepin' on, each episode is better and better!

  2. quinnc

Where do all these great huge brass deer come from?

  3. Charles

This was my favorite episode so far. I liked how the first look was totally extreme. Also loved that you used the same rug in different colors to show how much the look can change. Whoever casts your show should be applauded. It would also be great to have a follow up show on how the homeowners may have made a few tweaks after you've left.

One question: do you only include couples, because of the whole design "layering" theme, or will you be featuring single people in the future. I would consider getting a split personality if that would help.

  4. caroline

Great episode! @Charles- I think I remember Emily doing a special segment where she made over this guy's house using 2 styles he identified with. so maybe she'll do that again in the future.

  5. OMG! I looooved love loved this episode and I love these prints! SO glad you links to where they came from. I might need a few for my walls! :) Love your show Ms. EMily! :)

  6. You know what just occurred to me? So far on your show…you use colored sofas. Ok,….well this one was white. But all other's have been green or blue or turquoise….you've used color on furniture. I am so tired of everyone having a beige sofa. I know it's safe but I'm sick of it. So yay for you using color on the furniture.

  7. Thanks for sharing thwe trick with hanging papers on the wall first.
I love the blue carpet by the way.

  8. Steve

So happy to see you using wallpaper. So many people are afraid of it. It's a pain to take down but the effects can be so dramatic it's worth the work when you decide to change it out.

  9. It is so wonderful that you are showcasing and exposing different artists through your blog and tv show! I never tire of a good gallery wall although I lack the patience to nail the paper down and go through all of the steps-I just eyeball it which is probably not the best idea ;)

  10. dcmarvel

Hi.. Love this! Can you tell me where the sofa and rug are from.. love them both.

  11. I love that wallpaper! What's the source on it?

  12. Oops! Found it in an older post! Nevermind.

  13. OMG I am so excited that I have discovered your blog via wee wonderfuls. I just watch the final of Design Star last night over here in little wee New Zealand and am so hoping that they show your new show here. I am so wrapped that you won. I love your style and isn't it so cool that I can see you on TV and then leave you a message personally – The joys of the internet! I can't wait to read your blog and seeing all the updates. You have a new fan!

  14. Jill

This is fantastic. I love the blue rug. Can you tell me what the source is? thanks!

  15. LOVE how this one come out, Emily!

  16. Sorry, I guess I'm not as good at searching as Shayna. What's the source for the wallpaper? I can't stop coveting it!

  17. Hi! I've been trying to figure out what the little price tag (featured on the big reveal portion) means all over the message boards but to no avail – what does the 'Fig 1' or 'Fig 2' stand for? I'm trying to track down the credenza from the Bohemian Modern episode and the price tag says 'Fig 1 Credenza $200'. Did I miss an explanation of that somewhere? Searched the Secrets of a Stylist website on HDTV too. :) Thanks!!

PS Yours is by far the BEST show on HDTV! You've opened up a whole new style-mixing world.

  18. Karen

Love the explanation about creating a well-spaced gallery wall. I'm going to give it a try this weekend. Etsy can be a good source for art, but much of it looks all the same – quirky loses it's quirk when you see it everywhere (maps, globes, Keep Calm, funny bird prints, I'm looking at you) and on every designers website. I am spoiled though – I am lucky to live in a community with tons of artists who regularly open their studios, so I've been able to pick up a lot of nice originals for a song.

  19. InsideOutBeauty

I love Peggy Wolfe! Thanks to working on this episode, I am now a huge fan. Yay!

  20. i love that you use etsy art and love, love, love the way you made that wall come together.

  21. Sue

    Thank you for supporting artists!!!!

  22. Lo

This was my favorite room so far! Loved the wallpaper and art wall and the perfect mix of styles.
For those asking I read that the wallpaper is actually a design of the homeowner. It's by Hygge & West. She has her own blog ohjoy.blogs.com and there's a shop section there with links to the wallpaper… Which is all stunning!

  23. Nicole

I noticed that in the first photo, the artwork is not the same as in the later photos, with the credits. I really really like the portrait of a man on the far righthand side but there is no info on who did the pic- can you please post this info as well?!!
    thanks

  24. That's exactly how I did our last gallery wall, way easier than the first one I did. It's great to leave the paper up for a day or so, just to make sure you don't want to change anything around. The lemon print from Etsy is fab- I've seen it before and thought it was hilarious. I also heart the "loving you is fun because you're easy" or something like that version- super funny and tongue in cheek!

  25. Your sense of style is free and refreshing. You're an inspiration to those who are afraid to be themselves and express their own personal styles. I hope you'll visit my online print-shop to see affordable reproductions of my artwork at http://tinachadendirect.com I've tried over the years to design with all sorts of people in mind, and try to add a bit of color, light and interest to their favorite rooms. Please enjoy browsing my site!

  26. Love the display, but where is the rug from?

  27. Matt C

Where did you get the pictures of the Steak shaped like the US? I loved that!

  28. Kari

Beautiful gallery wall – I SO want to do one in my home!

  29. michele double you

I like to lurk around your site in general, but I have to say, I stalk this room. I don't want to admit how often I come here to visit and gaze and covet and think obsess about its beauty. I love it so very very very much. I want to upholster my sofa (much like yours, sans cushions–ours has attached seat and back) with Joy's wallpaper. I literally feel an ache because you can't wallpaper sofas….

  30. This design is steller! You most certainly
know how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and
your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost.
..HaHa!) Excellent job. I really enjoyed what you had to
say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!

  46. My favorite scene from the surprisingly superb “Neighbors” happens to be one of the smallest. It features Zac Efron’s Teddy watching his best friend Pete (Dave Franco) meet with potential employers in preparation for life after college.

  47. Thanks for the sensible critique. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do a little research about this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I am very glad to see such excellent info being shared freely out there.
