The Curbly Family Living room makeover

When I was a 22 year old waitress in New York, every single customer I had would say, ‘You’re so friendly … what are you from the MidWest or something?’ and I would say (in a VERY friendly voice, i’m sure), “Actually, I’m from Oregon.’ And they would say in a ‘like I said’ voice, ‘Yeah … the midwest’. That was before Portland was cool when there were a lot less people from the Midwest in New York, I suppose. They literally thought that Oregon was the Midwest.

Well last week I went to the real MidWest, Minnesota even (super midwest) –  possibly even for the first time. And yes, people there are VERY friendly. We (Orlando and I) went to redesign the Curbly.com family’s house  – a couple I had met at some Alt Summit parties the last two years. After meeting/hanging out with them I thought I liked them, sure, I like most people when I’m at a party if you know what I mean. But it was definitely a risk going there for 5 days without really knowing them. They could have been really weird, lame, have had really bad taste, or worse … really annoying.  And despite being super friendly, (most people even say ‘bubbly’ much to my torture), this girl can be strangely easy to annoy.  Ask, OH JUST ABOUT EVERYONE I KNOW. Except don’t because that sounds annoying.

Well i’m ecstatic to say that not only were these two friendly, but they were totally amazing in every way. In fact when everybody asks me how my trip was I say, ‘So great. It was actually the best case scenario possible’. That rarely happens, folks. Good people. Good design. Adorable kids. Satisfying work. Fun with Orlando. Just generally a GEERRAATTE week in the Twin Cities.

So welcome to the first part of a four part series documenting my Curbly home makeover. The whole makeover was sponsored by Sherwin-Williams, shot by Melissa Oholendt, produced by Curbly.com and art directed, designed and styled by me (and Orlando).

So here’s a before: curbly-liiving-room-before

I mean, great bones, but REALLY BAD SKIN.  While a lot of people like their dark woodwork, I generally am not terribly into it. The burgundy and yellow/white however I love, if by ‘love’ I mean am by strongly repelled by.

So they totally renovated it (before I got there, obviously) and painted it this beautiful Aloof Gray by Sherwin-Williams. And then we came in and decorated it so it looked like this:

curbly living room

The intention behind this room was to be warm, inviting, comfortable, family friendly and yet young and modern. The house was a classic turn of the century craftsman, so there needed to be some elements of traditional design in it so it wasn’t a jarring departure, but mostly they loved eclectic midcentury design so we needed to combine all those styles together.

I absolutely love how it turned out. Its so happy and bright, and yet warm and comfortable. I can’t decide what my favorite element is – I LOVE that rug from Loloi, I LOVE those two custom plaid wool chairs. And just generally I love how you want to sit in every chair/sofa because they are all so comfortable.

Here was our process:  First we talked style and needs for each room, then they created a pin board, and after a few skype conference calls, we started curating items from Craigslist and then supplemented with new pieces from my favorite resources.

That campaign dresser for instance was found painted a sad dark brown, and Bruno sprayed it white when we were there. The midcentury chairs were a combo of craigslist and a family hand-me-down that we had recovered and restored.

All in all a WILD transformation and one that I didn’t want to leave. Its low maintenance, unfussy, yet totally pulled together and intentional. Almost like it was designed ….

Stay tuned for the dining room transformation, complete with my favorite family photo gallery yet. 🙂

Meanwhile check out this resource list; they are all here, folks. Get to shopping.

All beautiful photos taken by Melissa Oholendt (Thank you, Melissa!!!), styled by me, produced by Curbly.com

  1. I’m in love with that coffee table and need it! Any ideas for ones similar to it that public can buy? I don’t have an account with Blue Traders but really, really want that coffee table!

  2. It’s such a young, fresh room. I love how it isn’t trendy but it’s still dynamic. Well done!

  3. “Sounds interesting,” Bolivar said, emerging from his hiding place. “It has been a long time since breakfast.”

  4. I was interested in the building-why shouldn’t I be? considering the assets that should be stored there. When I had visited most of the structure and could find my way around easily, I started looking into some of the more interesting vaults. Banknotes, freshly minted coins, stores of specie and bullion. It was so restful.

  5. “This man is known as Iba Ibada, nicknamed Iba-illfavored for obvious reasons.”

  6. I screeched low over a rock-tipped ridge, dived into the valley beyond-and braked to a hover under the trees below. Angelina had the door open as we juddered to a stop, the kit thrown out, and was diving right out behind it when I hit the twosecond-delay button. I was cutting it a little too close: the doorframe hit my bootheel as I went out. I changed the dive into a roll, hit the ground hard on my shoulders and thudded to a stop, all of the air knocked out of me.

  7. “I must go with you,” I said, hopping about on one foot while I tried to pull my dress trousers off.

  8. As good as this was, the rest of this world left a lot to be desired. The planet must have evolved from a supernova because the ground was rich in heavy metals for doping computer chips. Not to mention vast fields of the purest silicon for making the chips themselves. The computer manufacturers had thronged to Silicon Gulch. Followed by the software nerds and all the other people who lived off technological industry.

  9. After that it was just a lot of physical work that I had to do myself. I piled the paper forms in the center of the room, spreading them out so they would burn all the better. By the time I got around to loading the bearer bonds onto the wheelbot I was breathing hard. One last task. I grabbed up a handful of the bonds-worth over a million altogether-what a waste! And took them far down the hall away from any fire detectors. I lit them, one by one, with my lighter. Let them singe a bit before I put them out. When they were satisfactorily charred I went back and sprinkled them tastefully about the room. Then, the very last thing, I twisted the dial and set the thermite bomb. It would go off an hour after I left the building, a few minutes before the day workers arrived. They were going to have a far livelier time today than they expected.

  10. “That’s our boy!” I elated fondly. “And I’ll take you up on the champagne offer.”

  11. Did you know that there have been two books written about that trick? Each one said that they knew how it had been done.”

  12. “Being cuffed to that bed and left to maybe die of thirst made me feel the same way.”

  13. Chaise stepped forward and closed the door behind him. Eyes and gun never wavering. He circled us, felt for the armchair, then seated himself carefully into it.

  14. “With good reason, Tom. Igor collapsed and had a massive heart attack. He has had an acute posterior myocardial infarction, a major one. It knocked out a good deal of the right ventricle. He is responding to the emergency treatment and the consultants are talking about bypass surgery as soon as we reach the hospital. How is your house hunting going? “

  15. “I agree,” Angelina said. “I’ll send an interstellargram right now to tell him that his presence is strongly requested.”

  16. “Greetings dear friends, greetings. I am here this evening to bring you a gaggle of ghastliness, a hemorrhage of horror, a dribble of disgust. Gathered from all corners of the galaxy for your edification and repulsion are the freaks of nature heretofore concealed from the eyes of the public. The misborn misfits, the monstrous mutations that you may heard about, perhaps dreamed about. But if you dreamed, ladies and gentlemen, your dreams were nightmares. Terrorizing riders of the night-like Snailman!”

  17. I awoke, yawning broadly, and turned off the alarm. Ten minutes to midnight. I splashed cold water on my face then slipped out into the street away from the buildings. There were too many bugs and detectors on this planet to take chances. I knew that my employer had already made good use of them. This place was probably thickly bugged. I stood in the middle of the road and phoned Bolivar.

  60. Wow…you’ve got a lot of spam comments here! And I mean A LOT. I’ll probably get lost amongst them, but what the heck.

I just wanted to thank you for posting this. We just moved to a larger home and knew that our old living room rug was too small, but we weren’t in any rush to replace it since so many items were higher on the list (like, a fridge and a washer & dryer). However, our daughter just started learning to crawl and it turns out that our wool rug is giving her hives! Yikes. For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been searching for an area rug that was oversized, soft, non-wool, to both my and my husband’s tastes, and didn’t break the bank.

After looking at tons of rugs in stores and page after page of rugs online, I was getting frustrated. Most of the rugs I liked are wool and the few non-wool rugs I liked weren’t to my husband’s taste. During my lunch hour today, I decided to search your site for “rug” and I’m so glad I did. This Loloi rug is just what we were looking for! It was a little tough to find it still in stock at the size we need and it’s a bit more than we’d budgeted, but we think it will be worth it. I only wish I’d checked with you in the first place 😉

  61. I understand the aesthetic, but it pains me a little when people buy an old house with so much character…(original wood work, etc.) and refinish them to look new. Why not buy new? These old houses are such a treasure! It’s a shame to see them changed beyond recognition. And in reference to the before and after pictures…I know it’s harder to find paint colors for dark trim, but I think I liked the paint/trim better in the before pictures than the after pictures. And my husband had harsher words…he’s a bleeding heart for these early century beauties.

Not a fan of the plaid upholstery on the modern chairs … I was scarred early in life by a gigantic plaid upholstery sofa with overstuffed arms. I’m still scarred and left with a permanent fear of beige background plaid or just about any patterned upholstery.
