My first big glossy fashion Magazine plug, InStyle

There i am.  I’ve gone blonder, tanner and famouser.

Nope. Here i am:

Under ‘TrendSetter Web Faves’   BOOM!

I did the interview a few months ago where i gave them my top 50 favorite online places to shop, and they chose these two to feature – and sprinkled a bunch of them throughout the magazine.  (OpenSky is a flash sale sight that is curated by ‘celebrity’ curators as opposed to submissions and sales, so its more hand-picked.  We are starting to work together so as soon as its official, i’ll announce it and y’all can ‘follow’ me).  And you know Velocity, they are generally great source for all things modern.

As most of you know, i’ve worked for magazines for years, but being in them feels completely different.

So when i opened this up and saw that i was in there grouped in under ‘Trendsetters’ with Zooey Deschanel, Tori Burch, Todd Selby, Andy Spade and ModCloth i was EXTREMELY happy - like as happy as Bearcat is when  I tell her that she and I are going to have a Vampire Diaries marathon all night including massive amounts of cuddling.  That, is very very happy my friends.

I know you guys love me and i know my friends and family love me, but to get national press from a big glossy magazine that is more fashion than home, feels amazing.

I guess what i’m so proud of is that its from my hard work on the blog, its a ‘best of the web‘ and the blog is 100% my baby that i spend 10-20 hours (until 3 months ago unpaid) a week on.  I have to defend spending time on the blog all the time to people who don’t get it – people think its silly or cute or a waste of time, and yes it is a massive amount of work as a lot of you know – but its extremely rewarding, and totally worth it.

It’s become something that has helped me support Brian and I (Thanks to Lana), something that i can control completely, something that helps me sleep at night because i know that no matter what happens to the show, i have this business that can thrive independently.  It actually gives me the freedom to feel like i can start a family because i can always blog whilst 9 months pregnant or with a 2 month old, whereas shooting might be more difficult.

Let me be clear, obviously HGTV, Design Star and Secrets From a Stylist have had a lot to do with the blogs success, they have driven a ton of traffic my way and from the show i have a lot of original content which is what makes a successful blog.  So they pretty much propelled me a couple years ahead, traffic wise.  Thanks, boss.

And lastly, its from the blog i have gotten all my awesome new ‘Real People’ Clients and created a design company with a staff even, and business is a-booming.

So in case you have a blog and you think its going to go nowhere, think again.  Seriously.  The amount of people i know that have created their own success out of simply writing a blog is kinda crazy – A LOT.  The key is being yourself and not overanalyzing it.

I just wish we could come up with a better word than BLOG, its not doing us any favors….

OK, enough boasting for the year.  And thank you ModCloth and InStyle.  Very Much.  I owe you one.

In case you find this fun, read my very first blog entry ever – not even 2 years ago.   I was a little blogging baby, wearing my little blogging ones-y, finally taking the plunge that i had wanted to for years.  Nice job, past Emily, you done did it.

Anthology Magazine, with the lovely Joy.

You all probably already know about this one:  Anthology Magazine. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate a magazine that i can touch and hold and sleep with, and add to my prized collection of magazines and catalogues that i can’t seem to live without.  A magazine that comes to my door (although truthfully i used to buy it at Anthropologie until today when i became a subscriber).   And strangely i like paying for it.  It always baffled me that magazines are pretty much given away (YES, i know why, i worked in the industry for years, but its a bad business model, clearly….).  So the new Anthology Magazine is about to be sent out and looky looky who’s inside:

Yup.  My friend Joy, one of my favorite rooms i’ve done. And her cat.

Just to reiterate and plug some of my favorites:

The wallpaper is designed by Joy and is sold through Hygge and West.  I dream of moving one day and having this in my living room, and the only thing stopping me is that i feel like i should use a wallpaper i’ve never used before but honestly, honestly its really one of my favorites and i love it more and more every time i go over there.  It’s so quiet and glam at the same time.  I did a house this week with metallic gold wallpaper and I think its kinda where its at for me.  I can still do whatever colors i want, it acts as a big neutral, but feminine and glamorous at the same time….SOLD.  to Emily Von Henderson. Now to get a house.  and money to buy the house.

The sofa is from Room and Board

The rug is from Madeline Weinrib, one of my favorites fo shizzle.

And in case you think there is a typo with ‘styled by Emily henson’ know that its no typo, no siree. Emily is actually a friend of mine who is blonde and happens to also be a stylist and designer.  She actually worked on the pilot of Secrets with me and i wanted to hire her on, but man, you can not do this schedule with two kids (trust me, i can barely do it with two cats).  Anyway, Emily Henderson (hello, me here) designed the room for Secrets and Emily Henson styled the shoot for Anthology.  Emily Henson is also british which makes her infinitely cooler than i am, although sadly has moved back to England, perhaps because she is sick of being confused for Emily Henderson.

There are a bunch of other shots of Joy’s house in there, too, her bedroom (which has previously never been seen) with chevron drapery that she designed and is now selling (which i am so mad that i could have bought from her instead of making my own for a recent episode).

All shots by my other friend Terilyn Fisher.  Man i have talented friends.

And Joy is working on a new book which is bound to be a huge seller.  Not sure what i can tell you about it, but if it had existed two years ago when i needed it so badly (which i still kinda do) i would have peed in delight.  Well that seems unnecessary, probably just would have been happy and bought it.  in delight.

L.A. Times Review, also how does radio shack stay in business?

Well folks, Its offical.  Secrets from a Stylist is ‘underrated’. Before you start thinking that is a bad thing its from the LA times article ‘Underrated/overrated’ and basically it broke down 5 pop culture things that you either need to start watching or you are over watching.  We got ‘Under-rated, which is awesome:

That screen grabbed turned out small, so here’s the content:

Underrated / Overrated

Secrets From a Stylist’ on HGTV: If the many cooking shows on TV constitute food porn, think of this as home decorating porn. Starring the preternaturally perky Emily Henderson, this show reliably offers budget-minded inspiration for elevating a room beyond blank white walls and whatever Swedish-designed furnishings were on sale. Plus, with the show based in L.A., it offers an intoxicating hope that TV people could come over to do these things for us.

‘HOME DECORATING PORN’.   ‘Sup. Finally i have a reason to go into all of those 24 hour video stores,  i had no idea that there was a ‘home decorating porn’ section.  How very exciting.  I’m curious who else is in there… And i suppose that means that if i star in one, then that might make me a….. big fan of home decorating.  (yes, my mother reads and i’m pretty sure its never funny to a mother to joke about being a pornstar)

Also ‘Preternaturally perky’ means ‘extra naturally perky’ by the way.  Thank you very much, wikepedia.  And while i cringe at the word ‘perky’, its slightly hard to deny considering that the definition of perky is: ‘Having a buoyant or self-confident air; briskly cheerful’ which does kinda sounds like me, except i’m also intensely self-depricating, annoyingly scattered and plagued with a snaggle tooth that makes everyone tell me i look like Kirstin Dunst or Jewel.   But i’ll cut you if you call me bubbly. i can handle one, but not both.  And now that ‘perky’ is out there, ‘bubbly’ is forever forbidden.

Anyhoo while i would prefer to be ‘properly rated – you know, high ratings due to great content, etc’, its a good sign that a major newspaper is deeming it ‘under-rated’ as opposed to ‘overrated’.  But at the same time you want to be the ‘Seinfeld’ or ‘One tree Hill’ of decorating shows, not the Arrested Development’ or ‘Veronica Mars’.   Underrated doesn’t always mean you’ll last.  So keep spreading the word, my dear lovers.

Wait, I mean, can we talk about this….how the eff does ‘One tree hill’ stay on the air? I’m a sucker for anything with pretty teenager being sad and kissing, but i don’t get it. It’s like Radio Shack.  I mean, WHO SHOPS THERE!!!!????  Every time I see one, i get angry and i want to go in and say ‘hi, how are you.  Can i ask how much exactly are you guys grossing every month, no seriously, how much? $40-$50? What is your profit margin, how do you pay your employees and most importantly Why would i shop here? Why would i not go to Best Buy or Fry’s or go online for my electronics instead of a store that has no more than 60 products and is 20% more expensive?  Is anyone with me on this one?

(in truth, i’ve only watched like 3 episodes of One Tree Hill, so its not totally fair for me to  bash it, just compared to all the good ones that have been cancelled i get a little upset.)

So that’s my saturday for you.

Always yours,

The preternaturally perky home design pornstar, Emily Von Henderson. (i’ve added the ‘Von’ to get better tables at restaurants and its totally working.)

TV interviews

Alright, my first three TV interviews are done.  I was super nervous because two of them were live, meaning when i said ‘good to having me,’ instead of ‘good to be here’ or ‘thanks for having me’ i don’t get to re-do it.  Shucks. But i did actually have a lot of fun.  And then i had a note session with myself where I make promises to: speak slower, wear my hair down, sit up straight and get that snaggle tooth fixed, for instance.   (although Brian refuses to let me do the last one).
So in case you wanted to see me ramble in person, here ya go:
and
Don’t forget tomorrow night.  Down to four.
Courtland, Michael, Casey and Me.
Who’s going home?
