Shopping With Emily: Give Me That!

Guest Blog By Orlando

Dear Emily’s Readers,

Thanks for letting me come on the blog and blog about the stuff I shop for with Emily. This is my first week entering this blogpost myself, so please excuse any formatting issues (i.e. HUGE pictures). Emily and I have been having a lot of fun shopping for our clients and below are some of our favorite finds.

The first finds are all from the vintage stores on Lankershim in North Hollywood, which you can find on Emily’s Shopping Guide.

This chair is for our bachelor pad. Probably going to in a reading room. When Emily and I shop, we often ask ourselves “Would you have this in your house?” and we only buy it if we would want to take the piece home. Both of us love this piece so if the client didn’t like it by chance, we’d be fighting for it (Emily would win). $200.

This campaign console has great hardware. And a terrifying paint job. $125

We liked these mid-century bedside tables for our bachelor, but they were a little pricey for us. $800/pair.

Emily bought this adorable elephant for her daughter’s room. Who doesn’t exist. For more information on this disease, go to www.hoarders.com. (Just kidding that’s not a real website). $125.

This mid-century dresser was impeccably lacquered and was SO chic. I never use red but seeing this made me want to bring it in somewhere. It’s so pretty and dramatic. $1200.

A glamourous credenza. Love.

This credenza was only $125. We almost bought it but it had a slight warp to it. But I still wanted it a little bit. Sometimes I’ m too much a sucker for a bargain.

As soon as I saw this I knew there was no question that Emily had to have it. I mean, it’s a gorgeous brass trunk table. What’s not to like? Emily practically skipped down the street holding hands with this thing once we bought it.

Hay, Desk. What your name is? $800.

Simple mid-century credenza. I can’t remember the price but I think it was around $500.

This looks like a typical mid-century chair, but the scale is what made it cool. It’s large and in charge and ready for you to come lounge in it and read your latest book club book (which, sidenote, I’m totally behind on).

I thought these two chair were pretty adorable.

This adorable lacquered dresser was $1200. I want to be an adorable lacquered dresser that costs $1200.

How cute is this bedroom set? It’s, so, like “Valley Of The Dolls.”

We got this leather desk chair for a client. It’s so comfy and warm. $250.

Hey! Little ship! Sail on over to my house!

I made my way to the Long Beach Flea Market on Sunday. Sadly, Emily couldn’t come because she had a family function to go to. Thus, I spent the whole time crying and walking up to random blonde girls, asking them if they’d like to shop with me. They all said no. And it was raining. It was the saddest day of my life. Aside from these finds…

We looked at this bench here a few months ago and it was still for sale. We both love it but the only thing is that it’s SO long. Someday, we’ll have a client who needs an uberbench. $300.

I love this screen, and wish I had something in my apartment I wanted to hide so that I’d have a reason to buy it. $125.

Check out this delightful chest! Totally rad hardware and $35. Yes!

This was my favorite piece of the day. It was $300 and it’s likely going next to the fireplace in a clients gorgeous living room. I am keeping it safe and sound in my apartment right now, giving it complements and making sure it’s happy while it waits for its home.

For some reason I’ve been thinking about file cabinets a lot. They came up a few weeks ago so I’ve been wondering if cute ones exist. Every time I see a cute one my life feels more rich and meaningful. $100.

I took this picture because Emily has a cat named Bearcat. Sometimes when I visit her apartment she screams at me for not paying enough attention to Bearcat, who likes to sit on your computer whilst you work. So adorable/inconvenient.

The following find was the crowning achievement of the day. I found these adorable ladychairs for my apartment. I kept changing my mind on them. Wondering if buying them would accidentally turn me into an actual woman. But in the end I bought them because A) they are cute and B) they were $200 for the set.

I plan to reupholster them in grey linen to make them slightly less girly, but they’ll always be a feminine shape. Which is kind of okay with me because I have so many sharp masculine lines in my apartment. And on my face.

Here are my new chairs in their new home. Enjoying the view over Laurel Canyon Boulevard. I’m, like, so happy.

I hope you enjoyed this shopping trip. I’m going to go makeout with my new chairs now.

Love,
Orlando

The Titanic. Rose Bowl. And a Post from Orlando.

Dear Kate Winslet, Remember that scene in Titanic where you and Leonardo Dicaprio are so cold that you look like this?

Yeah, me neither. It’s been ages since I saw that movie. But the above picture describes perfectly how cold Emily and I were when we showed up to Rose Bowl on Sunday at 5:45 AM. I was pretty much wearing a speedo and a backpack and my teeth were chattering (I think I need to hire someone to dress me in the morning, I’m a total idiot). Emily was dressed more sensibly, but by the end of the morning neither of us could feel our feet. I tell you this not to make you feel sorry for us, but to let you know how very dedicated we are at beating people to the best deals at the Bowl. We love our clients enough to freeze to death in order to find furniture for them. We liked this chesterfield for $800. Emily was all “It’s real leather!” and then I was like “No it isn’t.” and thenshe was like “You ruin everything.” And that was that.

Emily practically started making out with this sofa when she saw it. It’s freshly reupholstered velvet that you just want to stick your whole face in. $750. A steal! We didn’t buy it because we didn’t have a client for it and Emily’s blue sofa collection is getting out of hand. (I’m scared).

If Brian ever asks me what he can do to keep Emily interested, I’m going to tell him to dress up in a wicker costume. I mean, every time that girl sees something wicker she’s all over it. I like wicker too, but I think wicker is a lot harder for dudes to get away with so I tend to run the other way when I see it. This was $300. I had to pull Emily away from it, kicking and screaming.

This was one of those moments when you’re like “Is this cool? Or ugly?” And then you blink and when you open your eyes you realize it’s hideous and feel ashamed for looking at it in the first place. God, why am I so mean today? I think it’s my OrlanDiet. I’M SO HUNGRY!

We bought this delightful table for our equally delightful client. $695.

Who doesn’t love a worn leather suitcase? $20.

Get this: 90 yards of fabric for $90. That’s a dollar a yard! Trust me, I was a math major. (No I wasn’t). And it’s so cool. I hope there’s some left over for me to make Hammer Pants out of.

Little brass table, come to me. $30.

Hi Woven Chair, I just love those turned arms! $75.

Those Kilim pillows are killin’ em! $40/set of 2.

We wanted to buy this coffee table for our friend Corbett but instead we bought it for our other friend Rachna. $300.

We purchased this suave guy for a bachelor pad we’re doing. $135.

These French friends are going to be king chairs at another home we’re decorating. $90/ser 2.

Look at these little brass antelope bookends! $40.

We bought this classic dresser for our bachelor pad. I kind of coveted it, but I already have a dresser and it would be rude to steal from our clients. Right? $400.

Dear World, I’m a brass-legged side table and I’m the cutest thing ever. Love, Brass Side Table

We bought these two mid-century chairs for a project we like to call “The Cool House” (because the clients are so cool). We thought the retro fabric on the left might scare the homeowners. So if they don’t want it I’m taking it home. I’ll name him Harold and he will be my new boyfriend. We’ll argue about how he’s such an old fuddy duddy and can’t keep up with the times. Eventually, he’ll undergo a massive surgery so that I will love him again. I’m scared that I just made that story up. The pair cost $600.

Do you think it’s okay for a boy to have one of these crazy big round loungers? Because I really want one. This one was pretty rad. Emily was all “I love the pattern!” and then I was like “EWWWWWWW! That COLOR!” and she was like “I’m not talking about the stupid color I’m talking about the pattern!” and then we were fighting and then we made up and then we hugged. $300.

We bought this ugly old vinyl ottoman for $60. But guess what, this ugly old vinyl ottoman is going to be reupholstered in sumptuous linen and is going to be the most glamourous coffee table ottoman ever known to man. So there.

We thought this dresser was cute. But it was an actual piece of junk so we passed. Literally falling apart before our eyes. $125.

I don’t know why I took a picture of this. Probably because it was so disgusting. Reupholstered they’d be totally cute Hollywood glam, but who let their cat EAT these things? I mean, just imagining what happened to them is giving me nightmares. $300/pair.

We found these fun French jugs. They’re big, and weren’t cheap. Sometimes you gotta pay the price. $160/set 3.

All in all, it was the most fulfilling day of our lives. Once the sun came up, the freezing weather subsided and was replaced by warmth, fun, and about five million people eating hot dogs right in front of my face. Afterward, Emily, Corbett and I went to Secret Lunch (at a location SO secret, no one will ever find it) and talked about how we’d remember our day at the Rose Bowl forever, and would someday tell this legend to our grandchildren and their grandchildren. No we didn’t. We talked about boys can clothes and the mall. We’re only human. Love, Orlando

OH, AND HEY. FRIENDS, Orlando forgot to plug his blog www.hommemaker.com so if you want more fabulosity every day, please check it and support my friend who is so supportive of me.  (because i pay him to be…kidding….but not).

And also remember if you are at Americasmart tomorrow (thursday) come see me speak on the fourth floor at 11am of building 1.  Come come come!!!!!

Rose Bowl Happiness

It’s a questionable disease.  I haven’t been to the Rose Bowl in two months and its almost killed me. So Saturday night i prepared for it like it was Christmas + vacation. I set out my clothes. I charge my phone and camera.  I set the coffee maker to auto brew for 5am.  I put on a mask (facial, not a criminal mask) and crawled into bed at 10pm, waiting eagerly for my alarm clock to go off at 5am.

When it did I was legitimately thrilled.  I arrived in Pasadena at 5:45, PITCH BLACK. Everyone was still unloading and setting up and the few shoppers that were there were carrying flashlights.  It’s a special experience.  Let me be clear, you don’t need to go this early, no one does really, BUT there is something so romantic about it that makes me insist on doing it. It’s a community of people obsessed with beautiful old things and i need to be the first to see them – just in case.  (and by ‘see’ i  mean ‘feel’ you could hardly see anything).

This was an hour in.  Not even when i first got there. We were FREEZING.

The early morning hours are truly the best. It’s not crowded at all.  There are still a ton of good pieces left.  The sun isn’t beating down on you yet, everyone is in a good mood.  It’s like Belle in Beauty in the Beast during the ‘Little Town, full of little people’ song.  Bonjour!

For me I got these 4 folding green velvet and gold folding chairs from the 50′s.  For $50.  I love these and have wanted them ever since I saw them on Robyn Glaser’s site

They shall go in my breakfast nook, once i get a breakfast nook.

We also scored 90 yards of this black and white chevron ikat for $100.  And its double that width (like 54″).  That is about $1 a yard my friends. It’s already going on a bench for a client but i think its also going to be drapery for another client.  Or for me.

These two club chairs were late in the day purchases.  We really liked the top one for $400 (brand new upholstery so its still a good price) but then they said we could have both for $600 (the other one has brand new upholstery, but its more vintage style) so we couldn’t resist.  We thought our client would love the top one, and if they didn’t like the bottom one then Orlando would buy it for $200.  They do look pretty cute together in the right room.

$300 awesome coffee table.

$100 vintage arc light

We got loads and loads more. I mean A TON.  We stayed for 9 hours  - yes we opened and closed it. We didn’t eat one thing. We spent around $3500 (for clients, not us) and we had a blast until we had to start collecting them all and trying to push carts of chairs and coffee tables through the crowd.  Orlando is going to do a post with all the pics, so make sure to check his blog this week.  www.hommemaker.com

And thank you so much to everyone who came up and talked to me/said nice things.  I had a group of 9 year old girls that were incredibly sweet as well as tons of hip chicks that totally made my day.

And in case you are going to Americasmart this week, i’m speaking there on Thursday at 11 (i think). Come and smile at me because i’m going to be terrified (although i have a dress rehearsal today in front of a bunch of fake audience members with a speaking coach, so that will be helpful).

Which is your favorite?

99 cent DIY candles and other stuff

I don’t understand sleep. Sometimes i go to bed at 1am, wake up at 6am and i’m fine, fresh as a baby daisy. Then last night i went to bed at 9:30 woke up at 7 and i’m literally dying of tiredness.  Although i have been boxing like a maniac and eating wayyy too good.  Can that exhaust you?

Meanwhile check out these Emily-ish posts:

Orlando is doing a ‘Shopping with Emily’ segment on his blog over here:  www.hommemaker.com where he shows what we bought or almost bought this week. (stay tuned for the mother of all posts after the Rose Bowl this weekend).

Also i’m doing a series of 99cent makeovers at HGTV.com, click HERE.

Which shows you how to make these for like zero dollars:

They made me want to copper leaf my body. and i just might.  I was thinking about being C-3po for halloween next year and spraying or leaving my body gold (with boxes and tubes here and there of course).  Not a bad idea, eh? (i’m not kidding)

I’m off to meet with a potential new client, get an acting/speaking coaching (don’t worry nothing weird, totally helpful actually) and then finish up my Americasmart presentation.

And then:  winter season premiere of Vampire Diaries tonight.  Let the teenage chemistry and blood fly.
