Episode four, recap

Yes.  The world has now gotten to see the hilariousness that is Bob and the adorableness that is Joy.  It was such a fun episode and style-wise i think that its one of my favorites.  (second look, not first)

Here’s how it all went down.  I met them a month or two before shooting, we’ve known about eachother for a long time, but we had never officially met until the show (no nepotism here, people, trust me).  I was super excited but a little wary – i mean i knew that she has good taste, and that Bob has LOTS of opinions which really does make your job harder.  Designing for a designer is tricky.  And joy’s style is nuanced – its clearly not just ‘look one’ and that was the problem. She loves vintage inspired but more modern, graphic and she is girly but not in the over the top frenchy kinda way that it turned out to be.  But being complicated isn’t necessary good for the show because it needs to be 2 clearly distinct looks.  The first style can’t be a combination of styles already because it will be a bit confusing (and people are already confused about the two looks) to the viewers.

At this point I hadn’t done a super over the top girly room, so while it wasn’t totally Joy, it was kinda necessary for the show and fun to do and see.  Keeping the episodes fresh and each style different for 26 shows is really really hard. I knew i could take her wallpaper and use it as the inspiration to girl the heck out of it.  (and yes, i’ll get to the wallpaper situation later).  I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again and again, it is so hard to make look 1 really good, but not so good that there isn’t a reason to do look 2.  So going over the top with it is super fun, but then people are happy to see it taken back and made more liveable.

Look one: total princess palace.  Not really joy in retrospect, its pretty hard to properly diagnose people that are nuanced, so now i realize how not joy that sofa is.  It was a last minute rental to make the room go over the top.

Ok lets’ talk favorites of look one:  those hot pink mother effing chairs.  I LOVE them. I rented them from Pasadena Antique mall, from the booth upstairs called ‘Bonita Interiors’.  They were $900 for the pair which isn’t nothing, but they were in PERFECT condition. We rented them for 25% and i’ve since really regretted not buying them. They were huge and super comfy.

The hot pink and the second look indigo rug are both Madeleine Weinrib The pricetag said $1000 but that was with my discount, i think they retail for $1200.  They let us borrow the first one, and then we shipped it back to them.

Shoot. i gotta run, sorry.  much more tomorrow!!!

Episode 4, teaser: OH JOY is in the hiznouse

Here’s the mood board for Joy’s episode.  Does it put you in the mood? I saw a rough cut of the episode a month ago, but i don’t remember if they kept me saying that the wallpaper is Joy’s wallpaper.  Now i know that you all know it is, but spread the word.  It looks so effing, awesome.  I liked the swatch a lot, but i didn’t realize how much i would love it til the whole room was done in it.  After doing her whole room in wallpaper i realized how much more i like an entire room done rather than one wall.

It just feels like a big golden floral hug.

A lot changed from the mood board to the show.  But the general idea is the same.  You can buy her wallpaper from Hygge and West Here.  I highly recommend it.

I’m psyched to see it, and i know they are.  god i wish this episode (as i wish most) was an hour long because so much funny stuff happened and was said that gets cut due to time.  But don’t worry, next week will be a lot of behind the scenes.

And i guess some people say that a new SFAS did not air last week at 9pm and instead it was the first one (which i wish didn’t because its so not my favorite) so make sure to check that its ‘NEW’.  I don’t totally understand it.  But it airs on my tv at 6pm and 9pm both new, but please check yours.  You can watch last weeks online here.

Emily, Emily who are you wearing?

I know.  You are dying to know. America is shouting out…WHO. IS. SHE. WEARING?

Who cares? you ask?  Well i have to admit that i like to know who or what people are wearing and into. Be it just for inspiration to find the vintage stuff that is more affordable.

Orlando and I like to pretend there is paparazzi all the time following us.  We can barely get away from them.  We can hardly eat a sandwich, walk to our car or check out a library book without someone screaming, ‘Emily, Emily who are you wearing?’ (this has never happened)

Just in case you are wondering (and just in case you work for one of these companies and want to send me stuff to wear cause i’m running out), here is a list of my go-to’s right now:

Emerson Made.  This jacket has made my life better:

I wear it 4-7 times a week, it goes with everything and while, yes, it isn’t cheap ($238) it has solved many a problem.  Absolutely worth the investment.

Most of my shirts are vintage 70’s secretary, or Steven Alan (although i have to curb the plaid so i lay off those, only 1 a week these days).

But my shoes? not so vintage – some boots, but all my platforms are new.  Lately here’s all i wear because they make me super tall AND i swear to god, they are absolutely comfortable. i’ve never been a big high heel girl, but i do love me some platforms:

Seychelles, incredibly comfortable considering they give me 7″:

I love them.  In general i’m a big feminine clothes/masculine shoes kinda girl and these are my new oxfords.  but real tall.  And when i wear charcoal tights they don’t cut off my leg at my ankle, instead make them look just uber long.

Also these bad boys:

Kork-Ease. Super comfy – like basically wearing flip flops, but WAAAYYY cuter.  I wear them with tights and shorts or with bell bottoms.  Couldn’t be happier.

And my latest purchase which i wore on camera yesterday:

From Anthropologie.  Why yes, i am all seventies right now.  Oh and i forgot these from Free People:

I bought the camel color version, which is much cuter but i couldn’t find online.  But they are rad, comfortable and weigh like 5 pounds each.

I feel like a bad ass with them on…. not that i’m not… i mean… i am… for sure….shut up.

Also if i could wear Lauren Moffatt everyday i would.  The dress i borrowed for the Sfas commercials on hgtv was this one, which is love:

And don’t forget Ban-do.  Love them all, but this heart does it for me all the time.

Anyway, that’s ‘who’ i’m wearing.  No please leave me alone, can’t a girl buy her pinkberry in peace?

CASTING ONE LUCKY FAMILY

Yup.  So we have been picked up for a Holiday Special for next year. It’s a one hour, 3 layers (including holiday decoration) bonanza.  We’ll shoot for 10 days (twice the norm) and i will pimp your pad per usual.  But we need more families for casting to make sure we find the right one.  Here’s what they want:

If you’re between 25-40 and own your home send us an email with the following information:

  •  Your name, age, address and phone number
  •  Photos of yourself, your family, and – of course – your home! (shots of the room(s) you’re interested in making over)
  •  A description of your design dilemma.

 Email us at casting@triconfilms.com!

Deadline for Submissions is March 25th, 2011.

*This episode will air Christmas 2011*

Just between you and me, if you rent your home, it could still work and if you are over the age limit,  i wouldn’t sweat it.  They just want a fun family with a great home in need of style.  Tell all your friends and family that live in L.A. (if they could live in Silverlake or Los Feliz that would be amazing).  I think we are shooting it mid-summer (like end of july)

Oh and in case you didn’t know….. you don’t pay for anything.  Nope.  Totally free.  It’s pretty much like winning the lottery. Except your chances are high if you meet the above criteria.

Also we are in the market for more interns.  We need some people that can lift/carry act like boys if they aren’t already.  (right now we have two great interns with back issues, and i have back issues right now so my two assistants are getting super worn out and a little over ‘girls’).  Sounds like fun, right?  NO it seriously is, but that is kinda the criteria that we are looking for beyond being smart, resourceful, creative and if you can make us laugh, forget about it.  Also if you know photoshop, crafting skills, have shopping resources and know your way around LA, that is even better.  Could be just a couple days a week, could be full time.  whatever.  We will be hiring next week (‘hiring’ is always an interesting word when it comes to interns, i know).  So send along your info asap.

Episode 2, more secrets

Let’s start at the beginning.  I met the couple, figured out their styles and started shopping.  I found the sofa first. I dug it out behind a ton of stuff, here’s proof:

It looked like this:

Fun, but kinda gross, itchy, dirty. etc. and too retro.  In general when i say retro its not a good thing. I want everything to reference the past with my vintage pieces but feel current.  A retro shape in a retro fabric is going back not moving forward.  That’s a secret. except not at all.

Anywhoo, I bought it at Design Modern on Melrose.  I thought it was such a piece and i knew that it wouldn’t be hard to re-upholster because it has really simple lines.  I bought it for $700 and i figured the reupholstery would be $600 to equal a pretty affordable vintage sofa.  I bought the fabric at the famous Pasadena rummage sale.  Super sophisticated, for such a retro piece to help elevate it, make it more modern and so you know, you don’t get someone else’s years of dust mites and dander.  I didn’t know this but in general all good reupholsterers re-foam everything and strip it down to the wood, so you don’t need to worry about it.  And you have some foam options:  you can have just foam, or foam with feather on top to make it more comfy for just a couple hundred more.  This guy didn’t give me the option, but in general go for it – it makes a good difference.

Here’s where it went wrong: I gave the upholsterer 9-10 yards (i forget) and he said it was enough.  but guess what?  it was not.  And this was the first time i used this guy (at the beginning i was tryng a few out to see who has the best prices/best quality).  He was running WAY behind and he told me the day before (tuesday of shooting, we install first look on wednesday) that he ran out of fabric for the cushions.  I didn’t have a swatch to match it, but sent people scrambling to find it.  Sucked.  So that is why it looks like this for first look:

There really wasn’t an option (except doing something diy that would probably look like Sh*t) and it didn’t look terrible, just really really low.  and hard. and almost like there isn’t any bottom cushions.  During the reveal Micah and Evee were kinda confused so i had to tell em.

Anywhoo, we matched the fabric with a linen and the contrasting textures actually looked pretty good.

He was supposed to have piped it though.  Needless to say i’ll never use him again.

Anyway, the sofa ended up being $1300 with the fabric being $10 from the rummage sale and $40 for the cushion.  Not bad for such a pretty piece.

And that’s the story of the sofa.

Ooh, lets talk coffee table.  Now we all see industrial carts as coffee tables these days, but they can run a pretty penny (like $400-$800) but i got this one at the PCC flea market for $250 and its pretty great.  Its the real deal, not one of the new repro’s and boys love this stuff.   That’s a man’s coffee table right there.  Dripping with testosterone.  gross.

Alright then we have this piece:

Not pretty, but now it looks like this:

Cute, right? i wish those pillows were smaller – like 12×16 not 16×16.  stupid regrets.  This piece ended up being too expensive in my opinion.  I bought it for $250 (too much) and it was $200 to reupholster and the fabric was $10 a yard and I needed 6 yards.  You do the math, but it ended up being a pretty expensive piece for being vintage.  In general i try to have chairs stay around $350 – $400 and i’ll splurge on some if its a huge talking piece or a show stopper (i have some coming up in this weeks episode with Joy).

More sources tomorrow/behind the scenes tomorrow. gotta get my hair and makeup did.
