Brian Patrick Flynn. you little genius, you.

Yes, he’s also involved with HGTV, but our affair started before i knew this. As much as I want to cross promote to get more people to watch both of us, i use my blog only for genuine stuff i love.  So trust me that this is real.  Brian and I have a mutual friend, Hayden and through our blogs/web-sites/twitter/ and on-line World of Warcraft gaming we developed quite the virtual friendship. So when i found out he was involved with my new company i was pretty psyched and all the more sure that HGTV is about to get a whole new demographic.  Blowing up, peeps.  Get on board.

Brian has done a series of how-to videos (as well as awesome, really smart and funny blog posts) for HGTV that are stellar in both creativity and production.   Here’s the first one:

It’s an effing awesome vinyl backsplash from an old photograph.  No weird mod podge decopauging here, nope.  Real live functional backsplash that looks totally modern and custom, but personal.  Do it.

I know.  And the best part is its an old picture of his grandparents at a party in the 50′s.  Watch the video to see how to do it, its a lot easier than it looks.

Check out Brian’s web-site where he writes/produces/designs etc the whole thing –   Decor Demon

And the best news is that this is the first of millions of videos he’s doing for HGTV.  But like anything, we all have to watch and tweet and blog about it for the powers that be to realize that we want more.

So, do you want more?

Then you shout ‘YES WE DO! YES WE DO!.

Huh. Seems like this little blogger fancies herself a rapper. YES! All rhony style.  Perhaps my first album would be called ‘Just because i look like an albino doesn’t mean i’m not fine, ho.’  i’m bringing pale back…. yea.

itunes, this december.

The Real McCobb

So part of my new job is doing a ton of research.  Every show has to be super different with two different styles. So while we say ‘mid-century’ as a broad term, i have to break it down to a particular style or decade within that.  Long story short i’ve been researching the 50′s, trying to interpret it in a not so kitschy way.

So I found this vintage book, which i am now obsessed with.  It’s not necessarily the furniture, which, doy, is totes beautifuls, but its the styling of them.

I mean, its kinda weird right?  So graphic and clean.  In fact the only reason i even think its a photograph and not a drawing is because there are shadows places….but i can’t find photo credits, so it might just be a drawing.  And if so, then whoever drew it is real real good.

You know I love a sculptural fig tree.  And the amount of negative space is awesome.  kudos.

Quite the risk with that thin black and white  stripe, Mr. McCobb.  And awesome/strange placement of that plant.  Well done, sire.  Its totally cuckoo in such a sophisticated way.

Anyway, it makes me miss styling and working in photography…well ‘miss’ is weird, it’s like how you miss an old boyfriend that you thought you were in love with until you met the man of your dreams….more nostalgic, i suppose.

Blue tuesdays

Yes, please.  I respond to this like some people respond to the ocean.  The ocean often bores me and scares me at the same time (not in a weird  ‘i won’t go in the water’ kinda way, just in a ‘the undertow can be quite strong and two days ago a surfer was eaten by a shark right off shore in santa barbara where his friends were within feet and at the same time unless i have like 10 decorating magazines i don’t know what i’m supposed to do on the sand’ kinda way).  So I’m a river and lake girl, with trees, swimming holes, crawfish.  You get the picture. So this pic does it for me.  Buy it here

Don’t get me wrong, I want to be here for sure:

Which reminds me of this:

i’ve had this tear sheet on my bulletin board for years.  I love it.

I just found a bunch of pics in ‘New Seaside Interiors’ by Taschen that I love, too.

Yes on the tile and those wackadoo awesome chairs.

and my fave.  kinda all i want in the world.  with a stack of shelter magazines, bearcat and mimi on my legs and Mr. henderson. Perhaps he could be playing with my hair?

Flea Market Mondays

What a bust.  Here’s how it went down.  I met Leo (my assistant) at PCC at 7am.  ‘Wow, we are like one of the first cars here.  huh’ and as i walk into the campus where it normally is I get the eerie feeling that we aren’t going to find the flea market here today.  So i check the calendar and i got my sundays mixed up.

No worries, because there is one 25 miles away in Santa Monica.  No big deal.  We’ve only missed the first hour which is the most important furniture hour.

Whatever.  It’s a beautiful morning, my loved ones are all alive and healthy so i brush it off.

We arrive in Santa Monica, now 8:15 and it was a total bust.  Nothing.  Nada.  Sure the flea market was there, but either all the good stuff was already bought or the dealers didn’t bring it this week.  I bought a chair and a lamp, both good, but not really blog worthy.

Then I hit up Melrose Trading post where all the real crap lives.  Wasted two hours, fighting LA hipsters for crap that neither of us needed.

It’s like i’m a drug addict where i’m used to have the dealers that i can trust to give me the best product, and getting crap from bozos for the same price makes me go into withdrawals.  and angry.

So here is what I bought recently, at stores.

Pretty cute little industrial cart.  $70

mid-century coffee table. I’m not the biggest glass top table fan, but this was $60 (although the glass will probably cost 50) and seemed like a good deal.

Here’s a video that Leo took of me last week at the Long Beach flea Market.  I will warn you that I was insanely ‘tired’ and low energy and unenthused by both the flea market and being shot.  And after seeing myself i was like, woah, this host gots ta start bringing her game even when its a flip cam.  But he did a great job of cutting together 2 hours of boring shopping in the rain after me getting like 4 hours of sleep.  The video we took yesterday is hopefully better, its still hard for me bring the big personality in front of a bunch of vendors at the flea, but i’m trying.  and hopefully getting more entertaining than this.  Thank god for good music, though, eh?

And btdubs, the big thing that i bought that rhymes with schmernal schmanders was for an over the top first look.  It was $80 and after checking with the producers and finding out that we in fact can’t show it, the dealer bought it back from me for $125 because he had someone offer him $200.  We made $45 bucks, not bad. Was it totally nuts?  yep.  But kinda awesome, too.   trust.

How do you all do it?

I feel like that workaholic parent that keeps promising things to their loving, loyal child, but is always too busy to actually show up at the game, or do a blue tuesday blog post.  But then I remember that you are not my children that are emotionally dependent on me.  at least not all of you.  and that it will be ok because there are approximately 45 trillion design blogs out there.   And at least i don’t have actual children…..that need food and water (i’m assuming you water children, once a day i hear).  I was telling my mom last night that I don’t know what I would do if I was a new mom…or an old mom…right now.  My mind is 100% on SFAS and the more I think about it, the better the show is.  So if I had kids, either the show or the kid would get less attention and one of them would suffer because of it – and it would probably be the show – cause those kid things are real, real cute and I love to cuddle with little mini people.

Hopefully by the time i start making the babies I’ll be old hat at SFAS, and everything will go just swimmingly.

Where is this going?

Right.  I’m working on a loft and have been trolling for ideas to separate the space.  I can’t believe how many bad ideas are out there.  It’s a lot of cheesy partitions and bamboo.  ick.  I’m already doing drapery for one area, but i don’t want a whole loft of drapery….So I’m thinking of stringing something.

But are there any fun ideas i’m missing out there?

I want to do something kitschy, without being cheesy.  (and kitsch can go cheese real fast).

(example of good kitsch…kinda on the verge of getting bad, but still pretty fun)

i’ve thought of sewing vintage scarves, and that might work….depends on the scarves.

i’ve thought of string curtain, but not totally psyched.

you know i wanted a hippie beaded curtain a la these:

but i’m pretty sure that they won’t.  don’t worry, i know when to stop.

Ribbon curtain? Nope.  Can go wedding real fast.

Are there any ideas out there?

I kinda like this, but it isn’t right either:

and this intrigues me, but repels me at the same time…but i like the imagination:

Also I need some Hollywood regency fabric, greek key or something like that for pillows  - or just hollywood regency pillows, does anybody have a good resource for that?

But seriously, how does everyone stay sane when you have a new job that you can’t stop thinking about?  I mean, i wake up in the middle of the night because i think, ooh, Calypso home has some rugs I should order…and then i get online for a couple hours….  I know its a good problem to have, maybe one of the best, up there with ‘bearcat loves me too much and needs an inordinate amount of cuddling time per day’.  but if there are any secrets i should know about, please share…..
